1 Mon fils, si tu t’es porté garant pour un compagnon, si tu t’es engagé envers un inconnu,	1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, thou hast engaged fast thy hand to a stranger.
2 te voilà lié par tes propres paroles, prisonnier de tes engagements.	2 Thou art ensnared with the words of thy mouth, and caught with thy own words.
3 Fais donc ceci, mon fils: libère-toi au plus vite: ne vois-tu pas que tu es à la merci d’autrui? Va le voir, mets-toi à ses genoux, supplie!	3 Do therefore, my son, what I say, and deliver thyself: because thou art fallen into the hand of thy neighbour. Run about, make haste, stir up thy friend:
4 N’accorde ni sommeil à tes yeux, ni repos à tes paupières;	4 Give not sleep to thy eyes, neither let thy eyelids slumber.
5 il faut te dégager, comme le cerf de son piège, comme l’oiseau du filet!	5 Deliver thyself as a doe from the hand, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Va voir la fourmi, paresseux; vois comme elle se démène et deviens sage.	6 Go to the ant, O sluggard, and consider her ways, and learn wisdom:
7 Il n’y a chez elle ni chef, ni surveillant, ni maître,	7 Which, although she hath no guide, nor master, nor captain,
8 mais elle entasse en été des provisions, elle amasse sa nourriture au temps de la moisson.	8 Provideth her meat for herself in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
9 Combien de temps encore resteras-tu allongé, paresseux! Quand vas-tu sortir du lit?	9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou rise out of thy sleep?
10 On dort un peu, puis on somnole un moment, puis on s’allonge les bras croisés…	10 Thou wilt sleep a little, thou wilt slumber a little, thou wilt fold thy hands a little to sleep:
11 et soudain la pauvreté te surprend comme un rôdeur, la misère fondra sur toi comme un pillard.	11 And want shall come upon thee, as a traveller, and poverty as a man armed. But if thou be diligent, thy harvest shall come as a fountain, and want shall flee far from thee.
12 Le vaurien, le malfaisant, passe en ricanant;	12 A man that is an apostate, an unprofitable man, walketh with a perverse mouth,
13 il cligne des yeux, traîne les pieds, fait claquer ses doigts.	13 He winketh with the eyes, presseth with the foot, speaketh with the finger.
14 Il est toujours à préparer quelque tromperie, il provoque à tout moment des querelles.	14 With a wicked heart he deviseth evil, and at all times he soweth discord.
15 Mais aussi, sans avertir, le malheur fondra sur lui, d’un coup il sera brisé et il ne s’en remettra pas.	15 To such a one his destruction shall presently come, and he shall suddenly be destroyed, and shall no longer have any remedy.
16 Il y a six choses que le Seigneur déteste, et même sept qu’il a en horreur:	16 Six things there are, which the Lord hateth, and the seventh his soul detesteth:
17 le regard méprisant, la langue menteuse, les mains qui répandent le sang innocent,	17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
18 le cœur qui médite des projets coupables, les pieds qui courent, impatients de faire le mal,	18 A heart that deviseth wicked plots, feet that are swift to run into mischief,
19 le faux témoin qui parle pour mentir, et l’homme qui provoque la mésentente entre frères.	19 A deceitful witness that uttereth lies, and him that soweth discord among brethren.
20 Mon fils, observe les conseils de ton père, ne rejette pas l’enseignement de ta mère.	20 My son, beep the commandments of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.
21 Tiens-les bien amarrés sur ton cœur, attache-les autour de ton cou.	21 Bind them in thy heart continually, and put them about thy neck.
22 Ils guideront tes démarches; dans ton sommeil ils veilleront sur toi; dès ton réveil ils te conseilleront.	22 When thou walkest, let them go with thee: when thou sleepest, let them keep thee; and when thou awakest, talk with them.
23 Le commandement est une lampe, la loi, une lumière; les réprimandes t’enseignent le chemin de la vie.	23 Because the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
24 Elles te garderont de la femme mauvaise, des paroles douces de la femme d’un autre.	24 That they may keep thee from the evil woman, and from the flattering tongue of the stranger.
25 Ne rêve pas à sa beauté, ne te laisse pas prendre à ses œillades.	25 Let not thy heart covet her beauty, be not caught with her winks:
26 La prostituée ne cherche qu’un morceau de pain, mais la femme adultère, ce qu’il lui faut c’est une vie précieuse.	26 For the price of a harlot is scarce one loaf: but the woman catcheth the precious soul of a man.
27 Peut-on emporter des braises dans ses poches et que les habits ne prennent pas feu?	27 Can a man hide fire in his bosom, and his garments not burn?
28 Peut-on marcher sur des charbons ardents sans se brûler les pieds?	28 Or can he walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be burnt?
29 C’est pareil pour celui qui va vers la femme de son prochain: qui la touche ne restera pas impuni.	29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife, shall not be clean when he shall touch her.
30 On ne condamne pas le chapardeur affamé qui vole pour se remplir l’estomac.	30 The fault is not so great when a man hath stolen: for he stealeth to fill his hungry soul:
31 Pourtant, s’il est pris, il rendra sept fois plus: toute sa maison y passera.	31 And if he be taken he shall restore sevenfold, and shall give up all the substance of his house.
32 C’est une tout autre folie que de commettre l’adultère avec une femme; celui qui s’y risque se perd lui-même.	32 But he that is an adulterer, for the folly of his heart shall destroy his own soul:
33 Il récoltera des coups et le déshonneur, il y laissera sa réputation.	33 He gathereth to himself shame and dishonour, and his reproach shall not be blotted out:
34 Car la jalousie met le mari en fureur; à la première occasion il se vengera sans pitié.	34 Because the jealousy and rage of the husband will not spare in the day of revenge,
35 Il n’acceptera aucune compensation, tes cadeaux ne le toucheront pas.	35 Nor will he yield to any man's prayers, nor will he accept for satisfaction ever so many gifts.
