| 1 Judas entendit alors parler des Romains. “Ils sont puissants, lui dit-on, compréhensifs envers tous ceux qui prennent leur parti, ils offrent leur amitié à ceux qui s’adressent à eux. De plus, ce sont de vaillants guerriers.” | 1 Now Judas heard of the fame of the Romans, that they were very strong and were well-disposed toward all who made an alliance with them, that they pledged friendship to those who came to them, |
| 2 On raconta à Judas leurs guerres et leurs exploits chez les Gaulois, comment ils s’étaient rendus maîtres de ce peuple et l’avaient contraint à payer l’impôt. | 2 and that they were very strong. Men told him of their wars and of the brave deeds which they were doing among the Gauls, how they had defeated them and forced them to pay tribute, |
| 3 On lui raconta également tout ce qu’ils avaient fait en Espagne pour s’emparer des mines d’argent et d’or de ce pays, | 3 and what they had done in the land of Spain to get control of the silver and gold mines there, |
| 4 comment ils étaient venus à bout par leur intelligence et leur persévérance de tout ce pays qui était pourtant fort éloigné de chez eux; ils avaient de même écrasé tous les rois qui étaient venus des extrémités de la terre pour les attaquer, ils leur avaient infligé une grande défaite, de sorte que les survivants leur payaient chaque année un impôt. | 4 and how they had gained control of the whole region by their planning and patience, even though the place was far distant from them. They also subdued the kings who came against them from the ends of the earth, until they crushed them and inflicted great disaster upon them; the rest paid them tribute every year. |
| 5 Enfin ils avaient triomphé par les armes de Philippe, puis de Persée roi des Kittim, et de ceux qui s’étaient dressés contre eux: ils les avaient tous soumis. | 5 Philip, and Perseus king of the Macedonians, * and the others who rose up against them, they crushed in battle and conquered. |
| 6 Antiocus le Grand, roi d’Asie, s’était avancé pour les combattre avec 120 éléphants, des chevaux, des chars et une immense armée, mais il avait été complètement battu par eux. | 6 They also defeated Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who went to fight against them with a hundred and twenty elephants and with cavalry and chariots and a very large army. He was crushed by them; |
| 7 Ils l’avaient même pris vivant, ils lui avaient imposé ainsi qu’à ses successeurs un lourd impôt qu’ils devaient payer à date fixe, et la livraison d’otages. | 7 they took him alive and decreed that he and those who should reign after him should pay a heavy tribute and give hostages and surrender some of their best provinces, |
| 8 On lui avait enlevé le pays indien, la Médie, la Lydie et plusieurs de ses plus belles provinces que l’on avait données au roi Eumène. | 8 the country of India and Media and Lydia. These they took from him and gave to Eumenes the king. |
| 9 Les Grecs voulaient se débarrasser des Romains. | 9 The Greeks planned to come and destroy them, |
| 10 Lorsque ceux-ci l’avaient appris, ils avaient envoyé contre eux un seul général; il les avait battus, faisant de très nombreuses victimes. Les Romains avaient alors emmené en captivité les femmes et les enfants, ils avaient pillé leurs biens et soumis leur pays, détruit leurs forteresses et réduit en esclavage beaucoup de gens qui y sont encore aujourd’hui. | 10 but this became known to them, and they sent a general against the Greeks * and attacked them. Many of them were wounded and fell, and the Romans * took captive their wives and children; they plundered them, conquered the land, tore down their strongholds, and enslaved them to this day. |
| 11 Les autres royaumes et les îles qui avaient résisté, avaient été détruits et soumis par les Romains. | 11 The remaining kingdoms and islands, as many as ever opposed them, they destroyed and enslaved; |
| 12 “Mais, lui dit-on, ils gardent leur amitié à ceux qui leur sont fidèles et leur font confiance; comme ils ont soumis les rois proches ou lointains, tous ceux qui entendent parler d’eux les redoutent. | 12 but with their friends and those who rely on them they have kept friendship. They have subdued kings far and near, and as many as have heard of their fame have feared them. |
| 13 Ceux qu’ils soutiennent et veulent faire régner, règnent, et ils changent ceux qu’ils veulent changer; leur puissance est considérable. | 13 Those whom they wish to help and to make kings, they make kings, and those whom they wish they depose; and they have been greatly exalted. |
| 14 Malgré cela, aucun parmi eux n’a pris la couronne ou revêtu le manteau royal pour en tirer gloire. | 14 Yet for all this not one of them has put on a crown or worn purple as a mark of pride, |
| 15 Ils ont institué un conseil de 320 membres qui chaque jour délibère sur les affaires du peuple pour que tout soit en ordre. | 15 but they have built for themselves a senate chamber, and every day three hundred and twenty senators constantly deliberate concerning the people, to govern them well. |
| 16 Chaque année ils confient à un seul homme l’autorité et le pouvoir sur tout le pays; tous obéissent à ce seul homme et entre eux il n’y a ni envie ni jalousie.” | 16 They trust one man each year to rule over them and to control all their land; they all heed the one man, and there is no envy or jealousy among them. |
| 17 Judas choisit donc Eupolème fils de Jean, de la famille d’Akkos, et Jason fils d’Éléazar; il les envoya à Rome pour faire avec les Romains un traité d’alliance et d’amitié. | 17 So Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, son of Accos, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome to establish friendship and alliance, |
| 18 Il voyait là le moyen de briser le joug des Grecs, puisque ceux-ci réduisaient Israël à l’esclavage. | 18 and to free themselves from the yoke; for they saw that the kingdom of the Greeks was completely enslaving Israel. |
| 19 Au bout d’un très long voyage, ils arrivèrent à Rome, entrèrent au sénat et parlèrent ainsi: | 19 They went to Rome, a very long journey; and they entered the senate chamber and spoke as follows: |
| 20 “Judas, surnommé Maccabée, ses frères et le peuple juif, nous ont envoyés vers vous pour faire avec vous un traité d’alliance et de paix. Nous voulons compter parmi vos alliés et amis.” | 20 "Judas, who is also called Maccabeus, and his brothers and the people of the Jews have sent us to you to establish alliance and peace with you, that we may be enrolled as your allies and friends." |
| 21 Cette demande plut aux sénateurs. | 21 The proposal pleased them, |
| 22 Voici donc la copie de la lettre qu’ils écrivirent sur des tablettes de bronze et qu’ils envoyèrent à Jérusalem comme document de paix et d’alliance avec les Juifs: | 22 and this is a copy of the letter which they wrote in reply, on bronze tablets, and sent to Jerusalem to remain with them there as a memorial of peace and alliance: |
| 23 “Que les Romains et la nation des Juifs aient la paix sur mer et sur terre à jamais! Que le glaive et l’ennemi s’éloignent d’eux! | 23 "May all go well with the Romans and with the nation of the Jews at sea and on land for ever, and may sword and enemy be far from them. |
| 24 S’il survient une guerre à Rome ou chez l’un de ses alliés, partout où s’étend sa puissance, | 24 If war comes first to Rome or to any of their allies in all their dominion, |
| 25 la nation des Juifs combattra sincèrement à leurs côtés selon ce que les circonstances lui indiqueront. | 25 the nation of the Jews shall act as their allies wholeheartedly, as the occasion may indicate to them. |
| 26 Ils ne donneront et ne fourniront ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni bateaux à ses adversaires, suivant en cela les décisions de Rome: ils seront fidèles à leurs engagements sans recevoir de paiement. | 26 And to the enemy who makes war they shall not give or supply grain, arms, money, or ships, as Rome has decided; and they shall keep their obligations without receiving any return. |
| 27 De même, s’il survient une guerre à la nation des Juifs, les Romains combattront sincèrement à ses côtés selon ce que les circonstances leur indiqueront. | 27 In the same way, if war comes first to the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall willingly act as their allies, as the occasion may indicate to them. |
| 28 Ils ne donneront ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni bateaux aux ennemis: c’est ainsi que Rome en a décidé, ils seront fidèles à leurs promesses sans autre paiement. | 28 And to the enemy allies shall be given no grain, arms, money, or ships, as Rome has decided; and they shall keep these obligations and do so without deceit. |
| 29 Ceci est l’accord que les Romains ont conclu avec le peuple juif. | 29 Thus on these terms the Romans make a treaty with the Jewish people. |
| 30 Si dans la suite les uns et les autres veulent ajouter ou retrancher quelque chose, ils le feront en toute liberté et ce qu’ils auront ajouté ou retranché aura force de loi. | 30 If after these terms are in effect both parties shall determine to add or delete anything, they shall do so at their discretion, and any addition or deletion that they may make shall be valid. |
| 31 Quant aux maux que le roi Démétrius a causés aux Juifs, nous lui avons écrit ceci: Pourquoi opprimes-tu les Juifs? Ce sont nos amis et nos alliés! | 31 "And concerning the wrongs which King Demetrius is doing to them we have written to him as follows, 'Why have you made your yoke heavy upon our friends and allies the Jews? |
| 32 S’ils t’accusent de nouveau, nous soutiendrons leurs droits et nous te combattrons sur mer et sur terre.” | 32 If now they appeal again for help against you, we will defend their rights and fight you on sea and on land.'" |
