Genesis 37

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Jacó habitou na região onde seu pai havia morado, na terra de Canaã.	1 But Jacob settled in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.
2 Eis a história da descendência de Jacó: José, ainda jovem, com a idade de dezessete anos, apascentava o rebanho com seus irmãos, os filhos de Bala e os filhos de Zelfa, mulheres de seu pai; e ele contou ao seu pai as más conversas dos irmãos.	2 This is the story of Joseph. Joseph was seventeen years old. As he was young, he was shepherdingthe flock with his brothers, with the sons of his father's wives, Bilhah and Zilpah; and Joseph brought his fatherbad reports about them.
3 Israel amava José mais do que todos os outros filhos, porque ele era o filho de sua velhice; e mandara-lhe fazer uma túnica de várias cores.	3 Jacob loved Joseph more than al his other sons, for he was the son of his old age, and he had adecorated tunic made for him.
4 Seus irmãos, vendo que seu pai o preferia a eles, conceberam ódio contra ele e não podiam mais tratá-lo com bons modos.	4 But his brothers, seeing how much more his father loved him than all his other sons, came to hate himso much that they could not say a civil word to him.
5 Ora, José teve um sonho, e o contou aos seus irmãos, que o detestaram ainda mais:	5 Now Joseph had a dream, and he repeated it to his brothers, who then hated him more than ever.
6 "Ouvi, disse-lhes ele, o sonho que tive:	6 'Listen', he said, 'to the dream I had.
7 estávamos ligando feixes no campo, e eis que o meu feixe se levantou e se pôs de pé, enquanto os vossos o cercavam e se prostravam diante dele."	7 We were binding sheaves in the field, when my sheaf suddenly rose and stood upright, and then yoursheaves gathered round and bowed to my sheaf.'
8 Seus irmãos disseram-lhe: "Quererias, porventura, reinar sobre nós e tornar-te nosso senhor?" E odiaram-no ainda mais por causa de seus sonhos e de suas palavras.	8 'So you want to be king over us,' his brothers retorted, 'you want to lord it over us?' And they hatedhim even more, on account of his dreams and of what he said.
9 José teve ainda outro sonho, que contou aos seus irmãos. "Tive, disse ele, ainda um sonho: o sol, a lua e onze estrelas prostravam-se diante de mim."	9 He had another dream which he recounted to his brothers. 'Look, I have had another dream,' he said.'There were the sun, the moon and eleven stars, bowing down to me.'
10 Ele contou isso ao seu pai e aos seus irmãos, mas foi repreendido por seu pai: "Que significa, disse-lhe ele, este sonho que tiveste? Viremos, porventura, eu, tua mãe e teus irmãos, a nos prostrar por terra diante de ti?"	10 He told his father and brothers, and his father scolded him. 'A fine dream to have!' he said to him.'Are all of us then, myself, your mother and your brothers, to come and bow to the ground before you?'
11 Seus irmãos ficaram, pois, com inveja dele, mas seu pai guardou a lembrança desse acontecimento.	11 His brothers held it against him, but his father pondered the matter.
12 Os irmãos de José foram apascentar os rebanhos de seu pai em Siquém.	12 His brothers went to pasture their father's flock at Shechem.
13 Israel disse a José: "Teus irmãos guardam os rebanhos em Siquém. Vem: vou mandar-te a eles." "Eis-me aqui", respondeu José.	13 Then Israel said to Joseph, 'Your brothers are with the flock at Shechem, aren't they? Come, I amgoing to send you to them.' 'I am ready,' he replied.
14 "Vai, pois, ver se tudo corre bem a teus irmãos e ao rebanho, e traze-me notícias deles." Enviou-o do vale de Hebron, e José foi a Siquém.	14 He said to him, 'Go and see how your brothers and the flock are doing, and bring me word.' He senthim from the val ey of Hebron, and Joseph arrived at Shechem.
15 Um homem encontrou-o errando pelo campo: "Que buscas?" perguntou ele.	15 A man found him wandering in the countryside and asked him, 'What are you looking for ? '
16 "Busco meus irmãos, respondeu ele. Dize-me onde apascentam os rebanhos."	16 'I am looking for my brothers,' he replied. 'Please tel me where they are pasturing their flock.'
17 E o homem respondeu: "Partiram daqui e ouvi-os dizer: Vamos a Dotain." Partiu então José em busca dos seus irmãos e encontrou-os em Dotain.	17 The man answered, 'They have moved on from here; indeed I heard them say, "Let us go toDothan." ' So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.
18 Eles o viram de longe. Antes que José se aproximasse, combinaram entre si como o haveriam de matar;	18 They saw him in the distance, and before he reached them they made a plot to kil him.
19 e disseram: "Eis o sonhador que chega.	19 'Here comes that dreamer,' they said to one another.
20 Vamos, matemo-lo e atiremo-lo numa cisterna; diremos depois que uma fera o devorou; e então veremos de que lhe aproveitaram os seus sonhos."	20 'Come on, let us kil him now and throw him down one of the storage-wells; we can say that somewild animal has devoured him. Then we shal see what becomes of his dreams.'
21 Ouvindo-o, porém, Rubem, quis livra-lo de suas mãos: "Não lhe tiremos a vida, disse ele.	21 But Reuben heard, and he saved him from their clutches. 'We must not take his life,' he said.
22 Não derrameis sangue. Jogai-o naquela cisterna, no deserto, mas não levanteis vossa mão contra ele." Pois Rubem pensava livrá-lo de suas mãos para o reconduzir ao pai.	22 'Shed no blood,' said Reuben to them, 'throw him down that wel out in the desert, but do not kil himyourselves' -- intending to save him from them and to restore him to his father.
23 Quando José se aproximou de seus irmãos, eles o despojaram de sua túnica, daquela bela túnica de várias cores que trazia,	23 So, when Joseph reached his brothers, they pul ed off his tunic, the decorated tunic which he waswearing,
24 e jogaram-no numa cisterna velha, que não tinha água.	24 and catching hold of him, threw him into the wel . The wel was empty, with no water in it.
25 E, sentando-se para comer, eis que, levantando os olhos, viram surgir no horizonte uma caravana de ismaelitas vinda de Galaad. Seus camelos estavam carregados de resina, de bálsamo e de ládano, que transportavam para o Egito.	25 They then sat down to eat. Looking up, they saw a group of Ishmaelites who were coming fromGilead, their camels laden with gum tragacanth, balsam and resin, which they were taking to Egypt.
26 Então Judá disse aos seus irmãos: "Que nos aproveita matar nosso irmão e ocultar o seu sangue?	26 Then Judah said to his brothers, 'What do we gain by killing our brother and covering up his blood?
27 Vinde e vendamo-lo aos ismaelitas. Não levantemos nossas mãos contra ele, pois, afinal, é nosso irmão, nossa carne." Seus irmãos concordaram.	27 Come, let us sel him to the Ishmaelites, then we shal not have laid hands on him ourselves. Afteral , he is our brother, and our own flesh.' His brothers agreed.
28 E, quando passaram os negociantes madianitas, tiraram José da cisterna e venderam-no por vinte moedas de prata aos ismaelitas, que o levaram para o Egito.	28 Now some Midianite merchants were passing, and they pul ed Joseph out of the wel . They soldJoseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver, and these men took Joseph to Egypt.
29 Rubem voltou à cisterna, e eis que José já não estava ali.	29 When Reuben went back to the wel , there was no sign of Joseph. Tearing his clothes,
30 Rasgou então suas vestes e voltou para junto dos seus irmãos: "O menino desapareceu, disse ele. E eu, para onde irei?"	30 he went back to his brothers. 'The boy has gone,' he said. 'What am I going to do?'
31 Tomaram então a túnica de José, mataram um cabrito e a mergulharam no seu sangue.	31 They took Joseph's tunic and, slaughtering a goat, dipped the tunic in the blood.
32 E mandaram-na levar ao seu pai com esta mensagem: "Eis o que encontramos: vê se não é, porventura, a túnica do teu filho."	32 Then they sent off the decorated tunic and had it taken to their father, with the message, 'This iswhat we have found. Do you recognise it as your son's tunic or not?'
33 Jacó reconheceu-a e exclamou: "É a túnica de meu filho! Uma fera o devorou! José foi estraçalhado!"	33 He recognised it and cried, 'My son's tunic! A wild animal has devoured him! Joseph has been torn topieces!'
34 E, rasgando as vestes, cobriu-se de um saco, e chorou o seu filho por muito tempo.	34 Tearing his clothes and putting sackcloth round his waist, Jacob mourned his son for many days.
35 Todos os seus filhos e filhas vieram consolá-lo, mas ele não aceitou nenhuma condolência: "É chorando, disse ele, que descerei para junto de meu filho na habitação dos mortos." Foi assim que o seu pai o chorou.	35 Al his sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. 'No,' he said, 'I wilgo down to Sheol in mourning and join my son.' Thus his father wept for him.
36 Os madianitas venderam-no a Putifar, no Egito, eunuco do faraó e chefe da guarda.	36 Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials andcommander of the guard.
