And it happened that, when he had completed speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan adhered to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him like his own soul.1 - Come ebbe finito di parlare con Saul, l'anima di Gionata si affezionò grandemente a quella di Davide, e Gionata l'amò come un altro se stesso.
And Saul took him that day, and would not permit him to return to his father’s house.2 Saul allora se lo prese [con sè] da quel giorno nè gli permise di far ritorno alla casa paterna.
Then David and Jonathan formed a pact. For he loved him like his own soul.3 Gionata poi strinse un'alleanza con Davide e poichè lo amava come un altro se stesso,
And Jonathan took off the coat that he was wearing, and he gave it to David, with the rest of his garments, even to his sword and bow, and even his belt.4 si spogliò della tunica che indossava e la diede a Davide con tutta la sua armatura, compresa la spada, l'arco e persino la cintura.
Also, David went out to do everything whatsoever that Saul sent him to do, and he conducted himself prudently. And Saul set him over men of war. And he was acceptable in the eyes of the entire people, and most of all in the sight of the servants of Saul.5 Davide se ne andava a tutte le imprese a cui era mandato da Saul e vi si conduceva da uomo accorto, tanto che Saul lo mise alla testa dei suoi guerrieri e fu ben visto da tutto il popolo, come pure dai servi di Saul.
Now when David returned, after he had struck down the Philistine, the women went out, from all the cities of Israel, leading the singing and dancing, rejoicing with timbrels and bells, so as to meet king Saul.6 Accadde che quando Davide tornò dall'aver ucciso il Filisteo, le dame uscirono da tutte le città di Israele cantando e danzando incontro al re Saul con timpani di gioia e con sistri
And the women sang, as they played, saying, “Saul has struck down a thousand, and David ten thousand.”7 e fra le danze e i canti dicevano: «Ne abbattè Saul mille e Davide diecimila.»
Then Saul became exceedingly angry, and this word was displeasing in his eyes. And he said: “They have given David ten thousand, and to me they gave only one thousand. What is left for him, except the kingdom itself?”8 Saul n'ebbe sdegno fortissimo e fu spiacente per così fatta espressione, dicendo: «Ne hanno assegnato diecimila a Davide e a me non ne dan che mille. Che altro gli manca se non il solo regno?».
Therefore, Saul did not regard David with a good eye, from that day and thereafter.9 E dal quel giorno Saul incominciò a non guardar più Davide di buon occhio.
Then, on the next day, the evil spirit from God assailed Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of his house. And David played with his hand, just as at every other time. And Saul held a lance in his hand.10 Il giorno appresso poi lo spirito maligno, mandato da Dio, invase Saul, che profetava in mezzo alla casa e Davide come di solito sonava l'arpa. Saul teneva in mano la lancia
And he threw it, thinking that he would be able to fix David to the wall. And David stepped aside twice, from before his face.11 e la scagliò col proposito di inchiodar Davide al muro; ma Davide per due volte si sottrasse dalla presenza di lui.
And Saul feared David, because the Lord was with him, but he had withdrawn from Saul.12 Ebbe allora Saul timore di Davide, perchè il Signore era con questi, mentre erasi ritirato da lui.
Therefore, Saul sent him away from himself, and he made him tribune over one thousand men. And he entered and departed in the sight of the people.13 Perciò lo allontanò da sè e lo fece capitano di mille uomini; così egli andava e veniva al cospetto del popolo.
Also, David acted prudently in all his ways, and the Lord was with him.14 Davide in ogni sua impresa agiva con grande prudenza e il Signore era con lui.
And so, Saul saw that he was exceedingly prudent, and he began to be wary of him.15 Ora Saul al vedere in lui tanta prudenza, cominciò a guardarsi da lui,
But all of Israel and Judah loved David. For he entered and departed before them.16 mentre tutto Israele e Giuda lo amava poichè egli andava e veniva, alla loro testa.
And Saul said to David: “Behold, my elder daughter, Merab. I will give her to you as wife. Only be a valiant man, and fight the wars of the Lord.” Now Saul was considering within himself, saying, “Let not my hand be upon him, but let the hands of the Philistines be upon him.”17 Saul disse a Davide: «Ecco Merob, la mia figliuola maggiore, io te la darò in isposa, purchè sii valoroso e combatta le battaglie del Signore». Saul però pensava fra sè: «Non sia la mia mano su di lui, bensì lo colpisca quella dei Filistei».
Then David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my life, and what is my father’s kinship within Israel, that I should be the son-in-law of the king?”18 Disse Davide a Saul: «E chi son io e che è mai la mia vita e la parentela di mio padre in Israele, da diventare io genero del re?».
Then it happened that, at the time when Merab, the daughter of Saul, was to be given to David, she was given to Adriel, the Meholathite, as wife.19 Venuto però il tempo di dare a Davide Merob, figlia di Saul, essa fu data in moglie ad Adriel di Molati.
Now Michal, the other daughter of Saul, loved David. And this was reported to Saul, and it pleased him.20 Però Micol, la seconda delle figlie di Saul, amò Davide; lo riferirono a Saul, ed egli n'ebbe piacere
And Saul said, “I will give her to him, so that she may be a stumbling block to him, and so that the hand of the Philistines may be upon him.” And Saul said to David, “In two things, you shall be my son-in-law today.”21 e disse: «Gliela darò, perchè sia per lui un tranello e la mano dei Filistei sia sopra di lui». Poi disse a Davide: «Per la seconda volta oggi tu diventerai mio genero».
And Saul commanded his servants to speak to David privately, saying: “Behold, you are pleasing to the king, and all his servants love you. Now therefore, be the son-in-law of the king.”22 Diede quindi quest'ordine ai servi suoi: «Dite in confidenza a Davide: - Ecco, tu piaci al re e tutti i di lui servi ti vogliono bene. Diventa dunque genero del re».
And the servants of Saul spoke all these words to the ears of David. And David said: “Does it seem a small matter to you, to be the son-in-law of the king? I am but a poor and unimportant man.”23 Avendo i servi riferito in segreto a Davide tutto ciò, questi soggiunse: «E vi par poco diventare genero del re? Io son povero e persona di nessun conto».
And the servants reported to Saul, saying, “David has spoken words in this manner.”24 Avendo i servi riferito a Saul quella risposta, dicendo: «Davide ha detto queste parole»,
Then Saul said, “Speak in this way to David: The king does not have need of any dowry, but only one hundred foreskins from the Philistine men, so that he may be vindicated from the enemies of the king.” So did Saul think to deliver David into the hands of the Philistines.25 Saul soggiunse: «Parlerete a Davide in tal guisa: - Al re non occorrono doni nuziali, ma soltanto cento prepuzii di Filistei, perchè si faccia vendetta dei nemici del re -». Ora Saul pensava di dar Davide nelle mani dei Filistei.
And when his servants had repeated to David the words that Saul had spoken, the word was pleasing in the eyes of David, so that he would become son-in-law of the king.26 Quando le parole di Saul furono dai suoi servi riferite a Davide, questi provò piacere al pensiero di diventar genero del re.
And after a few days, David, rising up, went with the men who were under him, and he struck down two hundred men of the Philistines. And he brought their foreskins, and he counted them out for the king, so that he might be his son-in-law. And so, Saul gave to him his daughter Michal as wife.27 E dopo alcuni giorni, levatosi cogli uomini che aveva sotto di sè, se ne andò, e, abbattuti duecento Filistei, ne apportò al re i prepuzii e li contò al re per divenirgli genero. Saul gli diede allora in moglie la figlia Micol
And Saul saw and understood that the Lord was with David. And Michal, the daughter of Saul, loved him.28 e s'accòrse e capì che il Signore era con Davide. Micol poi, figlia di Saul amava Davide,
And Saul began to fear David all the more. And Saul became the enemy of David, every day.29 mentre Saul cominciò a temere sempre più Davide e gli diventò nemico per sempre.
And the leaders of the Philistines departed. And from the beginning of their departure, David conducted himself more prudently than all the servants of Saul, and his name became exceedingly celebrated.30 Ora i principi dei Filistei presero a far incursioni. Fin dal principio delle loro incursioni Davide si comportò con accortezza maggiore che non gli altri servi di Saul e così divenne assai celebre il suo nome.
