And it happened that, when he had completed speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan adhered to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him like his own soul.1 Quando Davide ebbe finito di parlare con Saul, l'anima di Giònata s'era già talmente legata all'anima di Davide, che Giònata lo amò come se stesso.
And Saul took him that day, and would not permit him to return to his father’s house.2 Saul in quel giorno lo prese con sé e non lo lasciò tornare a casa di suo padre.
Then David and Jonathan formed a pact. For he loved him like his own soul.3 Giònata strinse con Davide un patto, perché lo amava come se stesso.
And Jonathan took off the coat that he was wearing, and he gave it to David, with the rest of his garments, even to his sword and bow, and even his belt.4 Giònata si tolse il mantello che indossava e lo diede a Davide e vi aggiunse i suoi abiti, la sua spada, il suo arco e la cintura.
Also, David went out to do everything whatsoever that Saul sent him to do, and he conducted himself prudently. And Saul set him over men of war. And he was acceptable in the eyes of the entire people, and most of all in the sight of the servants of Saul.5 Davide riusciva in tutti gli incarichi che Saul gli affidava, così che Saul lo pose al comando dei guerrieri ed era gradito a tutto il popolo e anche ai ministri di Saul.
Now when David returned, after he had struck down the Philistine, the women went out, from all the cities of Israel, leading the singing and dancing, rejoicing with timbrels and bells, so as to meet king Saul.6 Al loro rientrare, mentre Davide tornava dall'uccisione del Filisteo, uscirono le donne da tutte le città d'Israele a cantare e a danzare incontro al re Saul, accompagnandosi con i timpani, con grida di gioia e con sistri.
And the women sang, as they played, saying, “Saul has struck down a thousand, and David ten thousand.”7 Le donne danzavano e cantavano alternandosi:

"Saul ha ucciso i suoi mille,
Davide i suoi diecimila".

Then Saul became exceedingly angry, and this word was displeasing in his eyes. And he said: “They have given David ten thousand, and to me they gave only one thousand. What is left for him, except the kingdom itself?”8 Saul ne fu molto irritato e gli parvero cattive quelle parole. Diceva: "Hanno dato a Davide diecimila, a me ne hanno dato mille. Non gli manca altro che il regno".
Therefore, Saul did not regard David with a good eye, from that day and thereafter.9 Così da quel giorno in poi Saul si ingelosì di Davide.
Then, on the next day, the evil spirit from God assailed Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of his house. And David played with his hand, just as at every other time. And Saul held a lance in his hand.10 Il giorno dopo, un cattivo spirito sovrumano s'impossessò di Saul, il quale si mise a delirare in casa. Davide suonava la cetra come i giorni precedenti e Saul teneva in mano la lancia.
And he threw it, thinking that he would be able to fix David to the wall. And David stepped aside twice, from before his face.11 Saul impugnò la lancia, pensando: "Inchioderò Davide al muro!". Ma Davide gli sfuggì davanti per due volte.
And Saul feared David, because the Lord was with him, but he had withdrawn from Saul.12 Saul cominciò a sentir timore di fronte a Davide, perché il Signore era con lui, mentre si era ritirato da Saul.
Therefore, Saul sent him away from himself, and he made him tribune over one thousand men. And he entered and departed in the sight of the people.13 Saul lo allontanò da sé e lo fece capo di migliaia e Davide andava e veniva alla testa del suo gruppo.
Also, David acted prudently in all his ways, and the Lord was with him.14 Davide riusciva in tutte le sue imprese, poiché il Signore era con lui.
And so, Saul saw that he was exceedingly prudent, and he began to be wary of him.15 Saul, vedendo che riusciva proprio sempre, aveva timore di lui.
But all of Israel and Judah loved David. For he entered and departed before them.16 Ma tutto Israele e Giuda amavano Davide, perché egli si muoveva alla loro testa.
And Saul said to David: “Behold, my elder daughter, Merab. I will give her to you as wife. Only be a valiant man, and fight the wars of the Lord.” Now Saul was considering within himself, saying, “Let not my hand be upon him, but let the hands of the Philistines be upon him.”17 Ora Saul disse a Davide: "Ecco Merab, mia figlia maggiore. La dò in moglie a te. Tu dovrai essere il mio guerriero e combatterai le battaglie del Signore". Saul pensava: "Non sia contro di lui la mia mano, ma contro di lui sia la mano dei Filistei".
Then David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my life, and what is my father’s kinship within Israel, that I should be the son-in-law of the king?”18 Davide rispose a Saul: "Chi sono io e che importanza ha la famiglia di mio padre in Israele, perché io possa diventare genero del re?".
Then it happened that, at the time when Merab, the daughter of Saul, was to be given to David, she was given to Adriel, the Meholathite, as wife.19 Ma ecco, quando venne il tempo di dare Merab, figlia di Saul, a Davide, fu data invece in moglie ad Adriel di Mecola.
Now Michal, the other daughter of Saul, loved David. And this was reported to Saul, and it pleased him.20 Intanto Mikal, l'altra figlia di Saul, s'invaghì di Davide; ne riferirono a Saul e la cosa gli piacque.
And Saul said, “I will give her to him, so that she may be a stumbling block to him, and so that the hand of the Philistines may be upon him.” And Saul said to David, “In two things, you shall be my son-in-law today.”21 Saul diceva: "Gliela darò, ma sarà per lui una trappola e la mano dei Filistei cadrà su di lui". E Saul disse a Davide: "Oggi hai una seconda occasione per diventare mio genero".
And Saul commanded his servants to speak to David privately, saying: “Behold, you are pleasing to the king, and all his servants love you. Now therefore, be the son-in-law of the king.”22 Quindi Saul ordinò ai suoi ministri: "Dite di nascosto a Davide: Ecco, tu piaci al re e i suoi ministri ti amano. Su, dunque, diventa genero del re".
And the servants of Saul spoke all these words to the ears of David. And David said: “Does it seem a small matter to you, to be the son-in-law of the king? I am but a poor and unimportant man.”23 I ministri di Saul sussurrarono all'orecchio di Davide queste parole e Davide rispose: "Vi pare piccola cosa divenir genero del re? Io sono povero e uomo di bassa condizione".
And the servants reported to Saul, saying, “David has spoken words in this manner.”24 I ministri di Saul gli riferirono: "Davide ha risposto in questo modo".
Then Saul said, “Speak in this way to David: The king does not have need of any dowry, but only one hundred foreskins from the Philistine men, so that he may be vindicated from the enemies of the king.” So did Saul think to deliver David into the hands of the Philistines.25 Allora Saul disse: "Riferite a Davide: Il re non pretende il prezzo nuziale, ma solo cento prepuzi di Filistei, perché sia fatta vendetta dei nemici del re". Saul pensava di far cadere Davide in mano ai Filistei.
And when his servants had repeated to David the words that Saul had spoken, the word was pleasing in the eyes of David, so that he would become son-in-law of the king.26 I ministri di lui riferirono a Davide queste parole e piacque a Davide tale condizione per diventare genero del re. Non erano ancora passati i giorni fissati,
And after a few days, David, rising up, went with the men who were under him, and he struck down two hundred men of the Philistines. And he brought their foreskins, and he counted them out for the king, so that he might be his son-in-law. And so, Saul gave to him his daughter Michal as wife.27 quando Davide si alzò, partì con i suoi uomini e uccise tra i Filistei duecento uomini. Davide riportò i loro prepuzi e li contò davanti al re per diventare genero del re. Saul gli diede in moglie la figlia Mikal.
And Saul saw and understood that the Lord was with David. And Michal, the daughter of Saul, loved him.28 Saul si accorse che il Signore era con Davide e che Mikal figlia di Saul lo amava.
And Saul began to fear David all the more. And Saul became the enemy of David, every day.29 Saul ebbe ancor più paura nei riguardi di Davide; Saul fu nemico di Davide per tutti i suoi giorni.
And the leaders of the Philistines departed. And from the beginning of their departure, David conducted himself more prudently than all the servants of Saul, and his name became exceedingly celebrated.30 I capi dei Filistei facevano sortite, ma Davide, ogni volta che uscivano, riportava successi maggiori di tutti i ministri di Saul e in tal modo si acquistò grande fama.
