1 Whoever are servants under the yoke, let them consider their masters to be worthy of every honor, lest the name and doctrine of the Lord be blasphemed.	1 Quelli che si trovano sotto il giogo della schiavitù, stimino i loro padroni degni di ogni rispetto, perché non vengano bestemmiati il nome di Dio e la dottrina.
2 But those who have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brothers, but rather serve them all the more because they are believing and beloved, participants of the same service. Teach and exhort these things.	2 Quelli invece che hanno padroni credenti, non manchino loro di riguardo, perché sono fratelli, ma li servano ancora meglio, proprio perché quelli che ricevono i loro servizi sono credenti e amati da Dio. Questo devi insegnare e raccomandare.
3 If anyone teaches otherwise, and does not consent to the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to that doctrine which is in accord with piety,	3 Se qualcuno insegna diversamente e non segue le sane parole del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo e la dottrina conforme alla vera religiosità,
4 then he is arrogant, knowing nothing, yet languishing amid the questions and quarrels of words. From these arise envy, contention, blasphemy, evil suspicions:	4 è accecato dall’orgoglio, non comprende nulla ed è un maniaco di questioni oziose e discussioni inutili. Da ciò nascono le invidie, i litigi, le maldicenze, i sospetti cattivi,
5 the conflicts of men who have been corrupted in mind and deprived of truth, who consider profit to be piety.	5 i conflitti di uomini corrotti nella mente e privi della verità, che considerano la religione come fonte di guadagno.
6 But piety with sufficiency is great gain.	6 Certo, la religione è un grande guadagno, purché sappiamo accontentarci!
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and there is no doubt that we can take nothing away.	7 Infatti non abbiamo portato nulla nel mondo e nulla possiamo portare via.
8 But, having nourishment and some kind of covering, we should be content with these.	8 Quando dunque abbiamo di che mangiare e di che coprirci, accontentiamoci.
9 For those who want to become rich fall into temptation and into the snare of the devil and into many useless and harmful desires, which submerge men in destruction and in perdition.	9 Quelli invece che vogliono arricchirsi, cadono nella tentazione, nell’inganno di molti desideri insensati e dannosi, che fanno affogare gli uomini nella rovina e nella perdizione.
10 For desire is the root of all evils. Some persons, hungering in this way, have strayed from the faith and have entangled themselves in many sorrows.	10 L’avidità del denaro infatti è la radice di tutti i mali; presi da questo desiderio, alcuni hanno deviato dalla fede e si sono procurati molti tormenti.
11 But you, O man of God, flee from these things, and truly pursue justice, piety, faith, charity, patience, meekness.	11 Ma tu, uomo di Dio, evita queste cose; tendi invece alla giustizia, alla pietà, alla fede, alla carità, alla pazienza, alla mitezza.
12 Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you have been called, and make a good profession of faith in the sight of many witnesses.	12 Combatti la buona battaglia della fede, cerca di raggiungere la vita eterna alla quale sei stato chiamato e per la quale hai fatto la tua bella professione di fede davanti a molti testimoni.
13 I charge you, in the sight of God, who enlivens all things, and in the sight of Christ Jesus, who gave the testimony of a good profession under Pontius Pilate,	13 Davanti a Dio, che dà vita a tutte le cose, e a Gesù Cristo, che ha dato la sua bella testimonianza davanti a Ponzio Pilato,
14 to observe the commandment, immaculately, irreproachably, unto the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.	14 ti ordino di conservare senza macchia e in modo irreprensibile il comandamento, fino alla manifestazione del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo,
15 For at the proper time, he shall reveal the blessed and only Power, the King of kings and the Lord of lords,	15 che al tempo stabilito sarà a noi mostrata da Dio, il beato e unico Sovrano, il Re dei re e Signore dei signori,
16 who alone holds immortality, and who inhabits the inaccessible light, whom no man has seen, nor even is able to see, to whom is honor and everlasting dominion. Amen.	16 il solo che possiede l’immortalità e abita una luce inaccessibile: nessuno fra gli uomini lo ha mai visto né può vederlo. A lui onore e potenza per sempre. Amen.
17 Instruct the wealthy of this age not to have a superior attitude, nor to hope in the uncertainty of riches, but in the living God, who offers us everything in abundance to enjoy,	17 A quelli che sono ricchi in questo mondo ordina di non essere orgogliosi, di non porre la speranza nell’instabilità delle ricchezze, ma in Dio, che tutto ci dà con abbondanza perché possiamo goderne.
18 and to do good, to become rich in good works, to donate readily, to share,	18 Facciano del bene, si arricchiscano di opere buone, siano pronti a dare e a condividere:
19 to gather for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may obtain true life.	19 così si metteranno da parte un buon capitale per il futuro, per acquistarsi la vita vera.
20 O Timothy, guard what has been deposited with you, avoiding the voice of profane novelties and of opposing ideas, which are falsely called knowledge.	20 O Timòteo, custodisci ciò che ti è stato affidato; evita le chiacchiere vuote e perverse e le obiezioni della falsa scienza.
21 Certain persons, promising these things, have perished from the faith. May grace be with you. Amen.	21 Taluni, per averla seguita, hanno deviato dalla fede. La grazia sia con voi!
