CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINKING JAMES BIBLE
But Jesus continued on to the Mount of Olives.1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
And early in the morning, he went again to the temple; and all the people came to him. And sitting down, he taught them.2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
Now the scribes and Pharisees brought forward a woman caught in adultery, and they stood her in front of them.3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
And they said to him: “Teacher, this woman was just now caught in adultery.4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
And in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such a one. Therefore, what do you say?”5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
But they were saying this to test him, so that they might be able to accuse him. Then Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the earth.6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
And then, when they persevered in questioning him, he stood upright and said to them, “Let whoever is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.”7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
And bending down again, he wrote on the earth.8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
But upon hearing this, they went away, one by one, beginning with the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, with the woman standing in front of him.9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
Then Jesus, raising himself up, said to her: “Woman, where are those who accused you? Has no one condemned you?”10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
And she said, “No one, Lord.” Then Jesus said: “Neither will I condemn you. Go, and now do not choose to sin anymore.”11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me does not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
And so the Pharisees said to him, “You offer testimony about yourself; your testimony is not true.”13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
Jesus responded and said to them: “Even though I offer testimony about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going.14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
You judge according to the flesh. I do not judge anyone.15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
And when I do judge, my judgment is true. For I am not alone, but it is I and he who sent me: the Father.16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
And it is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
I am one who offers testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me offers testimony about me.”18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
Therefore, they said to him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered: “You know neither me, nor my Father. If you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also.”19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.
Jesus spoke these words at the treasury, while teaching in the temple. And no one apprehended him, because his hour had not yet come.20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
Therefore, Jesus again spoke to them: “I am going, and you shall seek me. And you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you are not able to go.”21 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
And so the Jews said, “Is he going to kill himself, for he said: ‘Where I am going, you are not able to go?’ ”22 Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.
And he said to them: “You are from below. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world.23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
Therefore, I said to you, that you will die in your sins. For if you will not believe that I am, you will die in your sin.”24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
And so they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them: “The Beginning, who is also speaking to you.25 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
I have much to say about you and to judge. But he who sent me is true. And what I have heard from him, this I speak within the world.”26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
And they did not realize that he was calling God his Father.27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
And so Jesus said to them: “When you will have lifted up the Son of man, then you shall realize that I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but just as the Father has taught me, so do I speak.28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
And he who sent me is with me, and he has not abandoned me alone. For I always do what is pleasing to him.”29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
As he was speaking these things, many believed in him.30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.
Therefore, Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him: “If you will abide in my word, you will truly be my disciples.31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
They answered him: “We are the offspring of Abraham, and we have never been a slave to anyone. How can you say, ‘You shall be set free?’ ”33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
Jesus answered them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, that everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
Now the slave does not abide in the house for eternity. Yet the Son does abide in eternity.35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
Therefore, if the Son has set you free, then you will truly be free.36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
I know that you are sons of Abraham. But you are seeking to kill me, because my word has not taken hold in you.37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
I speak what I have seen with my Father. And you do what you have seen with your father.”38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
They responded and said to him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them: “If you are the sons of Abraham, then do the works of Abraham.39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
But now you are seeking to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
You do the works of your father.” Therefore, they said to him: “We were not born out of fornication. We have one father: God.”41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
Then Jesus said to them: “If God were your father, certainly you would love me. For I proceeded and came from God. For I did not come from myself, but he sent me.42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
Why do you not recognize my speech? It is because you are not able to hear my word.43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
You are of your father, the devil. And you will carry out the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning. And he did not stand in the truth, because the truth is not in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks it from his own self. For he is a liar, and the father of lies.44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
But if I speak the truth, you do not believe me.45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
Which of you can convict me of sin? If I speak the truth to you, why do you not believe me?46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
Whoever is of God, hears the words of God. For this reason, you do not hear them: because you are not of God.”47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
Therefore, the Jews responded and said to him, “Are we not correct in saying that you are a Samaritan, and that you have a demon?”48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
Jesus responded: “I do not have a demon. But I honor my Father, and you have dishonored me.49 Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
But I am not seeking my own glory. There is One who seeks and judges.50 And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
Amen, amen, I say to you, if anyone will have kept my word, he will not see death for eternity.”51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
Therefore, the Jews said: “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and the Prophets; and yet you say, ‘If anyone will have kept my word, he shall not taste death for eternity.’52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. So who do you make yourself to be?”53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
Jesus responded: “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me. And you say about him that he is your God.54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
And yet you have not known him. But I know him. And if I were to say that I do not know him, then I would be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word.55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
Abraham, your father, rejoiced that he might see my day; he saw it and was glad.”56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
And so the Jews said to him, “You have not yet reached fifty years, and you have seen Abraham?”57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.”58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
Therefore, they took up stones to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and he departed from the temple.59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
