Deuteronomy 4

1 “And now, O Israel, listen to the precepts and judgments which I am teaching to you, so that, by doing these, you may live, and you may enter and possess the land, which the Lord, the God of your fathers, will give to you.	1 Et maintenant, Israël, écoute les lois et les coutumes que je vous enseigne aujourd'hui pourque vous les mettiez en pratique: afin que vous viviez, et que vous entriez, pour en prendre possession, dans lepays que vous donne Yahvé le Dieu de vos pères.
2 You shall not add to the word which I speak to you, neither shall you take away from it. Preserve the commandments of the Lord your God which I am teaching to you.	2 Vous n'ajouterez rien à ce que je vous ordonne et vous n'en retrancherez rien, mais vousgarderez les commandements de Yahvé votre Dieu tels que je vous les prescris.
3 Your eyes have seen all that the Lord has done against Baal-peor, in what manner he has crushed all of his worshippers from among you.	3 Vous voyez de vos yeux ce qu'a fait Yahvé à Baal-Péor: quiconque a suivi le Baal de Péor,Yahvé ton Dieu l'a exterminé du milieu de toi;
4 But you who adhere to the Lord your God are all still alive, to the present day.	4 mais vous qui êtes restés attachés à Yahvé votre Dieu, vous êtes aujourd'hui tous vivants.
5 You know that I have taught you precepts as well as justices, just as the Lord my God has commanded me. And so shall you do in the land that you will possess.	5 Vois! comme Yahvé mon Dieu me l'a ordonné, je vous ai enseigné des lois et des coutumes,pour que vous les mettiez en pratique dans le pays dont vous allez prendre possession.
6 And you shall observe and fulfill these in practice. For this is your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the peoples, so that, upon hearing all these precepts, they may say: ‘Lo, a wise and understanding people, a great nation.’	6 Gardez-les et mettez-les en pratique, ainsi serez-vous sages et avisés aux yeux des peuples.Quand ceux-ci auront connaissance de toutes ces lois, ils s'écrieront: "Il n'y a qu'un peuple sage et avisé, c'estcette grande nation!"
7 Neither is there any other nation so great, which has its gods so near to them, as our God is present to all our petitions.	7 Quelle est en effet la grande nation dont les dieux se fassent aussi proches que Yahvé notreDieu l'est pour nous chaque fois que nous l'invoquons?
8 For what other nation is there so renowned as to have ceremonies, and just judgments, and the entire law that I will set forth today before your eyes?	8 Et quelle est la grande nation dont les lois et coutumes soient aussi justes que toute cette Loique je vous prescris aujourd'hui?
9 And so, guard yourself and your soul carefully. You should not forget the words that your eyes have seen, and do not let them be cut away from your heart, throughout all the days of your life. You shall teach them to your sons and to your grandsons,	9 Mais prends garde! Garde bien ta vie, ne va pas oublier ces choses que tes yeux ont vues, niles laisser, en aucun jour de ta vie, sortir de ton coeur; enseigne-les au contraire à tes fils et aux fils de tes fils.
10 from the day on which you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, when the Lord spoke to me, saying: ‘Gather the people to me, so that they may listen to my words, and may learn to fear me, throughout all the time that they are alive on earth, and so that they may teach their children.’	10 Au jour où tu te tenais à L'Horeb en présence de Yahvé ton Dieu, Yahvé me dit: "Assemble-moi le peuple, que je leur fasse entendre mes paroles, afin qu'ils apprennent à me craindre tant qu'ils vivront surla terre, et qu'ils l'enseignent à leurs fils."
11 And you approached the base of the mountain, which was burning even toward heaven. And there was a darkness upon it, and a cloud, and a mist.	11 Et vous vous êtes alors approchés, pour vous tenir auprès de la montagne; la montagne étaitembrasée jusqu'en plein ciel -- ciel obscurci de nuages ténébreux et retentissants!
12 And the Lord spoke to you from the midst of fire. You heard the voice of his words, but you did not see any form at all.	12 Yahvé vous parla alors du milieu du feu; vous entendiez le son des paroles, mais vousn'aperceviez aucune forme, rien qu'une voix.
13 And he revealed his covenant to you, which he instructed you to carry out, and the ten words which he wrote on two tablets of stone.	13 Il vous révéla son alliance, qu'il vous ordonna de mettre en pratique, les dix paroles qu'ilinscrivit sur deux tables de pierre.
14 And he commanded me, at that time, that I should teach you the ceremonies and judgments which you must carry out, in the land that you shall possess.	14 Quant à moi, Yahvé m'ordonna en ce même temps de vous enseigner les lois et les coutumesque vous auriez à mettre en pratique dans le pays où vous pénétrez pour en prendre possession.
15 And so, guard your souls carefully. You saw no likeness on the day that the Lord God spoke to you on Horeb from the midst of fire.	15 Prenez bien garde à vous-mêmes: puisque vous n'avez vu aucune forme, le jour où Yahvé, àl'Horeb, vous a parlé du milieu du feu,
16 Otherwise, perhaps being deceived, you might have made a graven image, or an image of male or female,	16 n'allez pas vous pervertir et vous faire une image sculptée représentant quoi que ce soit:figure d'homme ou de femme,
17 a likeness of any of the beasts, which are upon the earth, or of birds, which fly under heaven,	17 figure de quelqu'une des bêtes de la terre, figure de quelqu'un des oiseaux qui volent dans leciel,
18 or of reptiles, which move across the earth, or of fish, which abide in the waters under the earth.	18 figure de quelqu'un des reptiles qui rampent sur le sol, figure de quelqu'un des poissons quivivent dans les eaux au-dessous de la terre.
19 Otherwise, perhaps lifting up your eyes to heaven, you might look upon the sun and the moon and all the stars of heaven, and being deceived by error, you might adore and worship these things, which the Lord your God created for the service of all the nations, which are under heaven.	19 Quand tu lèveras les yeux vers le ciel, quand tu verras le soleil, la lune, les étoiles et toutel'armée des cieux, ne va pas te laisser entraîner à te prosterner devant eux et à les servir. Yahvé ton Dieu les adonnés en partage à tous les peuples qui sont sous le ciel,
20 But the Lord has taken you up, and led you away from the iron furnaces of Egypt, in order to have a people of inheritance, just as it is to the present day.	20 mais vous, Yahvé vous a pris et vous a fait sortir de cette fournaise pour le fer, l'Egypte, pourque vous deveniez le peuple de son héritage, comme vous l'êtes encore aujourd'hui.
21 And the Lord became angry against me because of your words, and he swore that I would not cross over the Jordan, nor enter into the excellent land, which he will give to you.	21 A cause de vous, Yahvé s'est irrité contre moi; il a juré que je ne passerais pas le Jourdain etque je n'entrerais pas dans l'heureux pays qu'il te donne en héritage.
22 Behold, I shall die on this soil. I shall not cross over the Jordan. You shall cross it, and you shall possess the singular land.	22 Oui, je vais mourir en ce pays-ci et je ne passerai pas ce Jourdain. Mais vous, vous allez lepasser et prendre possession de cet heureux pays.
23 Be careful, lest you at sometime forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he has formed with you, and lest you make for yourselves a graven likeness of those things which the Lord has prohibited to be made.	23 Gardez-vous d'oublier l'alliance que Yahvé votre Dieu a conclue avec vous et de vousfabriquer une image sculptée de quoi que ce soit, malgré la défense de Yahvé ton Dieu;
24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.	24 car Yahvé ton Dieu est un feu dévorant, un Dieu jaloux.
25 When you will have conceived sons and grandsons while abiding in the land, and if, having been deceived, you make for yourselves any likeness, accomplishing evil in the sight of the Lord your God, so as to provoke him to wrath,	25 Lorsque tu auras engendré des enfants et des petits-enfants et que vous aurez vieilli dans lepays, quand vous vous serez pervertis, que vous aurez fabriqué quelque image sculptée, fait ce qui est mal auxyeux de Yahvé ton Dieu de manière à l'irriter,
26 I call heaven and earth as witnesses this day, that you shall quickly perish from the land, which, when you have crossed over the Jordan, you will possess. You will not live in it for a long time; instead, the Lord will destroy you.	26 je prends aujourd'hui à témoin contre vous les cieux et la terre: vous devrez promptementdisparaître de ce pays dont vous allez prendre possession en passant le Jourdain. Vous n'y prolongerez pas vosjours, car vous serez bel et bien anéantis.
27 And he will scatter you among all the nations, and few of you will remain among those nations, to which the Lord will lead you.	27 Yahvé vous dispersera parmi les peuples, et il ne restera de vous qu'un petit nombre, aumilieu des nations où Yahvé vous aura conduits.
28 And there, you will serve gods which were fabricated by the hands of men: gods of wood and of stone, who neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.	28 Vous y servirez des dieux faits de main d'homme, du bois et de la pierre incapables de voir etd'entendre, de manger et de sentir.
29 And when you will seek the Lord your God in that place, you shall find him, if only you seek him with all your heart, and in all the tribulation of your soul.	29 De là-bas, tu rechercheras Yahvé ton Dieu, et tu le trouveras si tu le cherches de tout toncoeur et de toute ton âme.
30 After all these things which have been foretold have found you, in the end time, you shall return to the Lord your God, and you will hear his voice.	30 Dans ta détresse, toutes ces paroles t'atteindront, mais à la fin des temps tu reviendras àYahvé ton Dieu et tu écouteras sa voix;
31 For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not abandon you, nor will he entirely destroy you, nor will he forget the covenant, which he swore to your fathers.	31 car Yahvé ton Dieu est un Dieu miséricordieux qui ne t'abandonnera ni ne te détruira, et quin'oubliera pas l'alliance qu'il a conclue par serment avec tes pères.
32 Inquire concerning the days of antiquity, which were before you, from the day when God created man upon the earth, from one end of heaven to another, if anything similar has ever occurred, or whether any such thing has ever been known,	32 Interroge donc les anciens âges, qui t'ont précédé depuis le jour où Dieu créa l'homme sur laterre: d'un bout du ciel à l'autre y eut-il jamais si auguste parole? En entendit-on de semblable?
33 that a people would hear the voice of God, speaking from the midst of fire, just as you have heard it, and live,	33 Est-il un peuple qui ait entendu la voix du Dieu vivant parlant du milieu du feu, comme tul'as entendue, et soit demeuré en vie?
34 whether God has acted so as to enter and take for himself a nation from the midst of the nations, by means of tests, signs, and wonders, by means of fighting, and a strong hand, and an outstretched arm, and terrible visions, in accord with all the things which the Lord your God has accomplished for you in Egypt, in the sight of your eyes.	34 Est-il un dieu qui soit venu se chercher une nation au milieu d'une autre, par des épreuves,des signes, des prodiges et des combats, à main forte et à bras étendu, et par de grandes terreurs -- toutes chosesque pour vous, sous tes yeux, Yahvé votre Dieu a faites en Egypte?
35 So may you know that the Lord himself is God, and there is no other beside him.	35 C'est à toi qu'il a donné de voir tout cela, pour que tu saches que Yahvé est le vrai Dieu etqu'il n'y en a pas d'autre.
36 He has caused you to hear his voice from heaven, so that he might teach you. And he showed you his exceedingly great fire on earth, and you heard his words from the midst of the fire.	36 Du ciel il t'a fait entendre sa voix pour t'instruire, et sur la terre il t'a fait voir son grand feu,et du milieu du feu tu as entendu ses paroles.
37 For he loved your fathers, and he chose their offspring after them. And he led you away from Egypt, advancing before you with his great power,	37 Parce qu'il a aimé tes pères et qu'après eux il a élu leur postérité, il t'a fait sortir d'Egypte enmanifestant sa présence et sa grande force,
38 so as to wipe away, upon your arrival, nations, very great and stronger than you, and so as to lead you in, and to present to you their land as a possession, just as you discern in the present day.	38 il a dépossédé devant toi des nations plus grandes et plus puissantes que toi, il t'a fait entrerdans leur pays et te l'a donné en héritage, comme il le reste encore aujourd'hui.
39 Therefore, know on this day and consider in your heart, that the Lord himself is God in heaven above, and on earth below, and there is no other.	39 Sache-le donc aujourd'hui et médite-le dans ton coeur: c'est Yahvé qui est Dieu, là-haut dansle ciel comme ici-bas sur la terre, lui et nul autre.
40 Keep his precepts and commandments, which I am teaching to you, so that it may be well with you, and with your sons after you, and so that you may remain for a long time upon the land, which the Lord your God will give to you.”	40 Garde ses lois et ses commandements que je te prescris aujourd'hui, afin d'avoir, toi et tes filsaprès toi, bonheur et longue vie sur la terre que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne pour toujours.
41 Then Moses set aside three cities, across the Jordan toward the eastern region,	41 Moïse choisit alors trois villes au-delà du Jourdain, à l'orient,
42 so that anyone might flee to these if he has killed his neighbor unwillingly, who was not his enemy a day or two earlier, and so that he would be able to escape to one of these cities:	42 où pourrait s'enfuir le meurtrier qui aurait tué son prochain involontairement, sans avoir eucontre lui de haine invétérée: il pourrait, s'enfuyant dans une de ces villes, sauver sa vie.
43 Bezer in the wilderness, which is situated in the plains of the tribe of Ruben; and Ramoth in Gilead, which is in the tribe of Gad; and Golan in Bashan, which is in the tribe of Manasseh.	43 C'étaient, pour les Rubénites, Béçèr, dans le désert, sur le Haut-Plateau; pour les Gadites,Ramot en Galaad; pour les Manassites, Golân en Bashân.
44 This is the law, which Moses set forth before the sons of Israel.	44 Voici la Loi que Moïse présenta aux Israélites.
45 And these are the testimonies and ceremonies as well as judgments, which he spoke to the sons of Israel, when they departed from Egypt,	45 Voici les stipulations, les lois et les coutumes que Moïse donna aux Israélites à leur sortied'Egypte,
46 across the Jordan, in the valley opposite the shrine of Peor, in the land of Sihon, the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses struck down. Accordingly, the sons of Israel, having departed from Egypt,	46 au-delà du Jourdain, dans la vallée proche de Bet-Péor, au pays de Sihôn, roi amoriterésidant à Heshbôn. Moïse et les Israélites l'avaient battu à leur sortie d'Egypte
47 possessed his land, and the land of Og, the king of Bashan, the land of the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, toward the rising of the sun:	47 et s'étaient emparés de son pays, ainsi que du pays d'Og, roi du Bashân, -- tous deux roisamorites au-delà du Jourdain à l'orient,
48 from Aroer, which is situated above the bank of the torrent Arnon, as far as Mount Zion, which is also called Hermon,	48 depuis Aroër qui est sur le bord de la vallée de l'Arnon jusqu'au mont Siôn (c'est l'Hermon) --
49 the entire plain across the Jordan, from its eastern region, as far as the sea of the wilderness, and even to the base of Mount Pisgah.	49 et de toute la Araba au-delà du Jourdain à l'orient, jusqu'à la mer de la Araba, au pied despentes du Pisga.
