Now the days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, were approaching.1 Appropinquabat autem dies festus azymorum, qui dicitur Pascha :
And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, were seeking a way to execute Jesus. Yet truly, they were afraid of the people.2 et quærebant principes sacerdotum, et scribæ, quomodo Jesum interficerent : timebant vero plebem.
Then Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, one of the twelve.3 Intravit autem Satanas in Judam, qui cognominabatur Iscariotes, unum de duodecim :
And he went out and was speaking with the leaders of the priests, and the magistrates, as to how he might hand him over to them.4 et abiit, et locutus est cum principibus sacerdotum, et magistratibus, quemadmodum illum traderet eis.
And they were glad, and so they made an agreement to give him money.5 Et gavisi sunt, et pacti sunt pecuniam illi dare.
And he made a promise. And he was seeking an opportunity to hand him over, apart from the crowds.6 Et spopondit, et quærebat opportunitatem ut traderet illum sine turbis.
Then the day of Unleavened Bread arrived, on which it was necessary to kill the Pascal lamb.7 Venit autem dies azymorum, in qua necesse erat occidi pascha.
And he sent Peter and John, saying, “Go out, and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat.”8 Et misit Petrum et Joannem, dicens : Euntes parate nobis pascha, ut manducemus.
But they said, “Where do you want us to prepare it?”9 At illi dixerunt : Ubi vis paremus ?
And he said to them: “Behold, as you are entering into the city, a certain man will meet you, carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him to the house into which he enters.10 Et dixit ad eos : Ecce introëuntibus vobis in civitatem occurret vobis homo quidam amphoram aquæ portans : sequimini eum in domum, in quam intrat,
And you shall say to the father of the household: ‘The Teacher says to you: Where is the guestroom, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’11 et dicetis patrifamilias domus : Dicit tibi Magister : Ubi est diversorium, ubi pascha cum discipulis meis manducem ?
And he will show you a large cenacle, fully furnished. And so, prepare it there.”12 Et ipse ostendet vobis cœnaculum magnum stratum, et ibi parate.
And going out, they found it to be just as he had told them. And they prepared the Passover.13 Euntes autem invenerunt sicut dixit illis, et paraverunt pascha.
And when the hour had arrived, he sat down at table, and the twelve Apostles with him.14 Et cum facta esset hora, discubuit, et duodecim apostoli cum eo.
And he said to them: “With longing have I desired to eat this Passover with you, before I suffer.15 Et ait illis : Desiderio desideravi hoc pascha manducare vobiscum, antequam patiar.
For I say to you, that from this time, I will not eat it, until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”16 Dico enim vobis, quia ex hoc non manducabo illud, donec impleatur in regno Dei.
And having taken the chalice, he gave thanks, and he said: “Take this and share it among yourselves.17 Et accepto calice gratias egit, et dixit : Accipite, et dividite inter vos.
For I say to you, that I will not drink from the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God arrives.”18 Dico enim vobis quod non bibam de generatione vitis donec regnum Dei veniat.
And taking bread, he gave thanks and broke it and gave it to them, saying: “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this as a commemoration of me.”19 Et accepto pane gratias egit, et fregit, et dedit eis, dicens : Hoc est corpus meum, quod pro vobis datur : hoc facite in meam commemorationem.
Similarly also, he took the chalice, after he had eaten the meal, saying: “This chalice is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you.20 Similiter et calicem, postquam cœnavit, dicens : Hic est calix novum testamentum in sanguine meo, qui pro vobis fundetur.
But in truth, behold, the hand of my betrayer is with me at table.21 Verumtamen ecce manus tradentis me, mecum est in mensa.
And indeed, the Son of man goes according to what has been determined. And yet, woe to that man by whom he will be betrayed.”22 Et quidem Filius hominis, secundum quod definitum est, vadit : verumtamen væ homini illi per quem tradetur.
And they began to inquire among themselves, as to which of them might do this.23 Et ipsi cœperunt quærere inter se quis esset ex eis qui hoc facturus esset.
Now there was also a contention among them, as to which of them seemed to be the greater.24 Facta est autem et contentio inter eos, quis eorum videretur esse major.
And he said to them: “The kings of the Gentiles dominate them; and those who hold authority over them are called beneficent.25 Dixit autem eis : Reges gentium dominantur eorum : et qui potestatem habent super eos, benefici vocantur.
But it must not be so with you. Instead, whoever is greater among you, let him become the lesser. And whoever is the leader, let him become the server.26 Vos autem non sic : sed qui major est in vobis, fiat sicut minor : et qui præcessor est, sicut ministrator.
For who is greater: he who sits at table, or he who serves? Is not he who sits at table? Yet I am in your midst as one who serves.27 Nam quis major est, qui recumbit, an qui ministrat ? nonne qui recumbit ? Ego autem in medio vestrum sum, sicut qui ministrat :
But you are those who have remained with me during my trials.28 vos autem estis, qui permansistis mecum in tentationibus meis.
And I dispose to you, just as my Father has disposed to me, a kingdom,29 Et ego dispono vobis sicut disposuit mihi Pater meus regnum,
so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and so that you may sit upon thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”30 ut edatis et bibatis super mensam meam in regno meo, et sedeatis super thronos judicantes duodecim tribus Israël.
And the Lord said: “Simon, Simon! Behold, Satan has asked for you, so that he may sift you like wheat.31 Ait autem Dominus : Simon, Simon, ecce Satanas expetivit vos ut cribraret sicut triticum :
But I have prayed for you, so that your faith may not fail, and so that you, once converted, may confirm your brothers.”32 ego autem rogavi pro te ut non deficiat fides tua : et tu aliquando conversus, confirma fratres tuos.
And he said to him, “Lord, I am prepared to go with you, even to prison and to death.”33 Qui dixit ei : Domine, tecum paratus sum et in carcerem et in mortem ire.
And he said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you have three times denied that you know me.” And he said to them,34 At ille dixit : Dico tibi, Petre, non cantabit hodie gallus, donec ter abneges nosse me. Et dixit eis :
“When I sent you without money or provisions or shoes, did you lack anything?”35 Quando misi vos sine sacculo, et pera, et calceamentis, numquid aliquid defuit vobis ?
And they said, “Nothing.” Then he said to them: “But now, let whoever has money take it, and likewise with provisions. And whoever does not have these, let him sell his coat and buy a sword.36 At illi dixerunt : Nihil. Dixit ergo eis : Sed nunc qui habet sacculum, tollat ; similiter et peram : et qui non habet, vendat tunicam suam et emat gladium.
For I say to you, that what has been written must still be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was esteemed with the wicked.’ Yet even these things about me have an end.”37 Dico enim vobis, quoniam adhuc hoc quod scriptum est, oportet impleri in me : Et cum iniquis deputatus est. Etenim ea quæ sunt de me finem habent.
So they said, “Lord, behold, there are two swords here.” But he said to them, “It is sufficient.”38 At illi dixerunt : Domine, ecce duo gladii hic. At ille dixit eis : Satis est.
And departing, he went out, according to his custom, to the Mount of Olives. And his disciples also followed him.39 Et egressus ibat secundum consuetudinem in monte Olivarum. Secuti sunt autem illum et discipuli.
And when he had arrived at the place, he said to them: “Pray, lest you enter into temptation.”40 Et cum pervenisset ad locum, dixit illis : Orate ne intretis in tentationem.
And he was separated from them by about a stone’s throw. And kneeling down, he prayed,41 Et ipse avulsus est ab eis quantum jactus est lapidis : et positis genibus orabat,
saying: “Father, if you are willing, take this chalice away from me. Yet truly, let not my will, but yours, be done.”42 dicens : Pater, si vis, transfer calicem istum a me : verumtamen non mea voluntas, sed tua fiat.
Then an Angel appeared to him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony, he prayed more intensely;43 Apparuit autem illi angelus de cælo, confortans eum. Et factus in agonia, prolixius orabat.
and so his sweat became like drops of blood, running down to the ground.44 Et factus est sudor ejus sicut guttæ sanguinis decurrentis in terram.
And when he had risen up from prayer and had gone to his disciples, he found them sleeping out of sorrow.45 Et cum surrexisset ab oratione et venisset ad discipulos suos, invenit eos dormientes præ tristitia.
And he said to them: “Why are you sleeping? Rise up, pray, lest you enter into temptation.”46 Et ait illis : Quid dormitis ? surgite, orate, ne intretis in tentationem.
While he was still speaking, behold, a crowd arrived. And he who is called Judas, one of the twelve, went ahead of them and approached Jesus, in order to kiss him.47 Adhuc eo loquente, ecce turba : et qui vocabatur Judas, unus de duodecim, antecedebat eos, et appropinquavit Jesu ut oscularetur eum.
And Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you betray the Son of man with a kiss?”48 Jesus autem dixit illi : Juda, osculo Filium hominis tradis ?
Then those who were around him, realizing what was about to happen, said to him: “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”49 Videntes autem hi qui circa ipsum erant, quod futurum erat, dixerunt ei : Domine, si percutimus in gladio ?
And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.50 Et percussit unus ex illis servum principis sacerdotum, et amputavit auriculam ejus dexteram.
But in response, Jesus said, “Permit even this.” And when he had touched his ear, he healed him.51 Respondens autem Jesus, ait : Sinite usque huc. Et cum tetigisset auriculam ejus, sanavit eum.
Then Jesus said to the leaders of the priests, and the magistrates of the temple, and the elders, who had come to him: “Have you gone out, as if against a thief, with swords and clubs?52 Dixit autem Jesus ad eos qui venerant ad se principes sacerdotum, et magistratus templi, et seniores : Quasi ad latronem existis cum gladiis et fustibus ?
When I was with you each day in the temple, you did not extend your hands against me. But this is your hour and that of the power of darkness.”53 Cum quotidie vobiscum fuerim in templo, non extendistis manus in me : sed hæc est hora vestra, et potestas tenebrarum.
And apprehending him, they led him to the house of the high priest. Yet truly, Peter followed at a distance.54 Comprehendentes autem eum, duxerunt ad domum principis sacerdotum : Petrus vero sequebatur a longe.
Now as they were sitting around a fire, which had been kindled in the middle of the atrium, Peter was in their midst.55 Accenso autem igne in medio atrii et circumsedentibus illis, erat Petrus in medio eorum.
And when a certain woman servant had seen him sitting in its light, and had looked at him intently, she said, “This one was also with him.”56 Quem cum vidisset ancilla quædam sedentem ad lumen, et eum fuisset intuita, dixit : Et hic cum illo erat.
But he denied him by saying, “Woman, I do not know him.”57 At ille negavit eum, dicens : Mulier, non novi illum.
And after a little while, another one, seeing him, said, “You also are one of them.” Yet Peter said, “O man, I am not.”58 Et post pusillum alius videns eum, dixit : Et tu de illis es. Petrus vero ait : O homo, non sum.
And after the interval of about one hour had passed, someone else affirmed it, saying: “Truly, this one also was with him. For he is also a Galilean.”59 Et intervallo facto quasi horæ unius, alius quidam affirmabat, dicens : Vere et hic cum illo erat : nam et Galilæus est.
And Peter said: “Man, I do not know what you are saying.” And at once, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.60 Et ait Petrus : Homo, nescio quid dicis. Et continuo, adhuc illo loquente, cantavit gallus.
And the Lord turned around and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord that he had said: “For before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”61 Et conversus Dominus respexit Petrum, et recordatus est Petrus verbi Domini, sicut dixerat : Quia priusquam gallus cantet, ter me negabis.
And going out, Peter wept bitterly.62 Et egressus foras Petrus flevit amare.
And the men who were holding him ridiculed him and beat him.63 Et viri qui tenebant illum, illudebant ei, cædentes.
And they blindfolded him and repeatedly struck his face. And they questioned him, saying: “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?”64 Et velaverunt eum, et percutiebant faciem ejus : et interrogabant eum, dicentes : Prophetiza, quis est, qui te percussit ?
And blaspheming in many other ways, they spoke against him.65 Et alia multa blasphemantes dicebant in eum.
And when it was daytime, the elders of the people, and the leaders of the priests, and the scribes convened. And they led him into their council, saying, “If you are the Christ, tell us.”66 Et ut factus est dies, convenerunt seniores plebis, et principes sacerdotum, et scribæ, et duxerunt illum in concilium suum, dicentes : Si tu es Christus, dic nobis.
And he said to them: “If I tell you, you will not believe me.67 Et ait illis : Si vobis dixero, non credetis mihi :
And if I also question you, you will not answer me. Neither will you release me.68 si autem et interrogavero, non respondebitis mihi, neque dimittetis.
But from this time, the Son of man will be sitting at the right hand of the power of God.”69 Ex hoc autem erit Filius hominis sedens a dextris virtutis Dei.
Then they all said, “So you are the Son of God?” And he said. “You are saying that I am.”70 Dixerunt autem omnes : Tu ergo es Filius Dei ? Qui ait : Vos dicitis, quia ego sum.
And they said: “Why do we still require testimony? For we have heard it ourselves, from his own mouth.”71 At illi dixerunt : Quid adhuc desideramus testimonium ? ipsi enim audivimus de ore ejus.
