And so, when Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judah, in the days of king Herod, behold, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,1 Nacido Jesús en Belén de Judea, en tiempo del rey Herodes, unos magos que venían del Oriente se presentaron en Jerusalén,
saying: “Where is he who was born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and we have come to adore him.”2 diciendo: «¿Dónde está el Rey de los judíos que ha nacido? Pues vimos su estrella en el Oriente y hemos venido a adorarle».
Now king Herod, hearing this, was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.3 En oyéndolo, el rey Herodes se sobresaltó y con él toda Jerusalén.
And gathering together all the leaders of the priests, and the scribes of the people, he consulted with them as to where the Christ would be born.4 Convocó a todos los sumos sacerdotes y escribas del pueblo, y por ellos se estuvo informando del lugar donde había de nacer el Cristo.
And they said to him: “In Bethlehem of Judea. For so it has been written by the prophet:5 Ellos le dijeron: «En Belén de Judea, porque así está escrito por medio del profeta:
‘And you, Bethlehem, the land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah. For from you shall go forth the ruler who shall guide my people Israel.’ ”6 Y tú, Belén, tierra de Judá, no eres, no, la menor entre los principales clanes de Judá; porque de ti saldrá un caudillo que apacentará a mi pueblo Israel».
Then Herod, quietly calling the Magi, diligently learned from them the time when the star appeared to them.7 Entonces Herodes llamó aparte a los magos y por sus datos precisó el tiempo de la aparición de la estrella.
And sending them into Bethlehem, he said: “Go and diligently ask questions about the boy. And when you have found him, report back to me, so that I, too, may come and adore him.”8 Después, enviándolos a Belén, les dijo: «Id e indagad cuidadosamente sobre ese niño; y cuando le encontréis, comunicádmelo, para ir también yo a adorarle».
And when they had heard the king, they went away. And behold, the star that they had seen in the east went before them, even until, arriving, it stood still above the place where the child was.9 Ellos, después de oír al rey, se pusieron en camino, y he aquí que la estrella que habían visto en el Oriente iba delante de ellos, hasta que llegó y se detuvo encima del lugar donde estaba el niño.
Then, seeing the star, they were gladdened by a very great joy.10 Al ver la estrella se llenaron de inmensa alegría.
And entering the home, they found the boy with his mother Mary. And so, falling prostrate, they adored him. And opening their treasures, they offered him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.11 Entraron en la casa; vieron al niño con María su madre y, postrándose, le adoraron; abrieron luego sus cofres y le ofrecieron dones de oro, incienso y mirra.
And having received a response in sleep that they should not return to Herod, they went back by another way to their own region.12 Y, avisados en sueños que no volvieran donde Herodes, se retiraron a su país por otro camino.
And after they had gone away, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: “Rise up, and take the boy and his mother, and flee into Egypt. And remain there until I tell you. For it will happen that Herod will seek the boy to destroy him.”13 Después que ellos se retiraron, el Angel del Señor se apareció en sueños a José y le dijo: «Levántate, toma contigo al niño y a su madre y huye a Egipto; y estate allí hasta que yo te diga. Porque Herodes va a buscar al niño para matarle».
And getting up, he took the boy and his mother by night, and withdrew into Egypt.14 El se levantó, tomó de noche al niño y a su madre, y se retiró a Egipto;
And he remained there, until the death of Herod, in order to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Out of Egypt, I called my son.”15 y estuvo allí hasta la muerte de Herodes; para que se cumpliera el oráculo del Señor por medio del profeta: De Egipto llamé a mi hijo.
Then Herod, seeing that he had been fooled by the Magi, was very angry. And so he sent to kill all the boys who were in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years of age and under, according to the time that he had learned by questioning the Magi.16 Entonces Herodes, al ver que había sido burlado por los magos, se enfureció terriblemente y envió a matar a todos los niños de Belén y de toda su comarca, de dos años para abajo, según el tiempo que había precisado por los magos.
Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled, saying:17 Entonces se cumplió el oráculo del profeta Jeremías:
“A voice has been heard in Ramah, great weeping and wailing: Rachel crying for her sons. And she was not willing to be consoled, because they were no more.”18 Un clamor se ha oído en Ramá, mucho llanto y lamento: es Raquel que llora a sus hijos, y no quiere consolarse, porque ya no existen.
Then, when Herod had passed away, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph in Egypt,19 Muerto Herodes, el Angel del Señor se apareció en sueños a José en Egipto y le dijo:
saying: “Rise up, and take the boy and his mother, and go into the land of Israel. For those who were seeking the life of the boy have passed away.”20 «Levántate, toma contigo al niño y a su madre, y ponte en camino de la tierra de Israel; pues ya han muerto los que buscaban la vida del niño».
And rising up, he took the boy and his mother, and he went into the land of Israel.21 El se levantó, tomó consigo al niño y a su madre, y entró en tierra de Israel.
Then, hearing that Archelaus reigned in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned in sleep, he withdrew into parts of Galilee.22 Pero al enterarse de que Arquelao reinaba en Judea en lugar de su padre Herodes, tuvo miedo de ir allí; y avisado en sueños, se retiró a la región de Galilea,
And arriving, he lived in a city which is called Nazareth, in order to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: “For he shall be called a Nazarene.”23 y fue a vivir en una ciudad llamada Nazaret; para que se cumpliese el oráculo de los profetas: Será llamado Nazoreo.
