1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:	1 Il Signore disse a Mosè:
2 “First, avenge the sons of Israel from the Midianites, and then you shall be gathered to your people.”	2 "Vendica i figli d'Israele dai Madianiti, poi ti riunirai al tuo popolo".
3 And immediately Moses said: “Arm the men among you for a battle, so that they may be able to fulfill the retribution of the Lord on the Midianites.	3 Mosè ordinò al popolo: "Si armino tra voi uomini per l'esercito: marcino contro Madian per eseguire la vendetta del Signore contro Madian.
4 Let one thousand men be chosen from each tribe of Israel, who shall be sent to war.”	4 Invierete nell'esercito mille uomini per ogni tribù, di tutte le tribù d'Israele".
5 And they gave one thousand from each tribe, that is, twelve thousand foot soldiers for battle.	5 Così, tra le migliaia d'Israele, furono forniti mille uomini per tribù, 12.000 uomini equipaggiati per la guerra.
6 And Moses sent them with Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest; also, he delivered to him the holy vessels, and the trumpets to sound.	6 Mosè li mandò in guerra, mille per tribù, e con loro Finees, figlio del sacerdote Eleazaro, con in mano gli oggetti sacri e le trombe per l'acclamazione.
7 And when they had fought against the Midianites and had prevailed, they killed all the men.	7 Mossero contro Madian, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè, e uccisero tutti i maschi.
8 And they put to death by the sword their kings: Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five leaders of the nation, and also Balaam the son of Beor.	8 Oltre ai loro caduti, uccisero i cinque re di Madian: Evi, Rekem, Sur, Ur, Reba, e uccisero con la spada Balaam, figlio di Beor.
9 And they seized their women and little ones, and all their cattle, and all their goods; whatever they were able to have, they despoiled.	9 Poi i figli d'Israele fecero schiave le donne di Madian, i loro bambini, fecero razzia dei loro animali, dei loro greggi e di ogni loro bene.
10 Both their cities and their villages, as well as their fortresses, they burned.	10 Incendiarono le città dove abitavano e i loro recinti;
11 And they carried away prey from everything that they had seized, both of men and of beasts.	11 presero tutto il bottino e la preda, gente e animali,
12 And they led these to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to all the multitude of the sons of Israel. But the remainder of the articles they carried to the camp on the plains of Moab, next to the Jordan, opposite Jericho.	12 e condussero i prigionieri, la preda e il bottino a Mosè, al sacerdote Eleazaro e alla comunità dei figli d'Israele, accampati nelle steppe di Moab, presso il Giordano di Gerico.
13 Then Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the assembly went out to meet them beyond the camp.	13 Mosè, il sacerdote Eleazaro e tutti i capi della comunità uscirono incontro a loro, fuori dell'accampamento.
14 And Moses, being angry with the leaders of the army, and the tribunes, and the centurions, who had arrived from the battle,	14 Mosè si arrabbiò contro i comandanti dell'esercito, capi delle migliaia e capi delle centinaia, che tornavano da quella spedizione di guerra.
15 said: “Why have you spared the females?	15 Mosè disse loro: "Avete lasciato in vita tutte le femmine?
16 Are not these the ones who deceived the sons of Israel at the suggestion of Balaam, and who caused you betray the Lord by the sin of Peor, because of which the people also were struck down?	16 Furono esse, per suggerimento di Balaam, a stornare dal Signore i figli d'Israele nel fatto di Peor e ad attirare il flagello sulla comunità del Signore.
17 Therefore, put to death all of them: whatever is of the male sex, even among the little ones, and cut the throats of those women who have known men by sexual relations.	17 Ora uccidete ogni maschio tra i bambini e ogni donna che sia unita con un uomo.
18 But the young girls, and all female virgins, reserve for yourselves.	18 Tutte le ragazze che non si sono unite con un uomo le lascerete vivere per voi.
19 And remain beyond the camp for seven days. Whoever has killed a man, or who has touched one that was killed, shall be purified on the third day and on the seventh day.	19 Voi fermatevi fuori dell'accampamento per sette giorni; chi ha ucciso qualcuno e chiunque ha toccato un ucciso si purifichi nel terzo giorno e nel settimo giorno; questo per voi e per i vostri prigionieri.
20 And all of the spoils, whether it is a garment, or a vessel, or another useful thing, made from the pelts or hair of goats, or from wood, shall be expiated.”	20 Purificherete anche i vestiti, tutti gli oggetti di pelle, tutti i lavori di pelo di capra e tutti gli oggetti di legno".
21 Likewise, Eleazar the priest spoke in this manner to the men of the army who had fought: “This is the precept of the law, which the Lord has commanded Moses:	21 Il sacerdote Eleazaro disse ai soldati che erano andati in guerra: "Questa è la prescrizione della legge che il Signore ha ordinato a Mosè:
22 Gold, and silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin,	22 l'oro, l'argento, il rame, il ferro, lo stagno e il piombo,
23 and all that may be able to pass through fire, shall be purified by fire. But whatever is not able to sustain fire shall be sanctified with the waters of expiation.	23 tutte le cose che sopportano il fuoco, le farete passare nel fuoco e saranno pure; siano poi purificate anche nell'acqua lustrale. Tutto quello che non può sopportare il fuoco, lo farete passare nell'acqua.
24 And you shall wash your garments on the seventh day, and, after having been purified, you shall enter the camp.”	24 Laverete i vostri vestiti nel settimo giorno e sarete puri: poi rientrerete nell'accampamento".
25 And the Lord also said to Moses:	25 Il Signore ordinò a Mosè:
26 “Take the sum of those things which were captured, from man even to beast, you and Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the common people.	26 "Tu, il sacerdote Eleazaro e i capi dei casati della comunità fate il computo della preda che è stata fatta, in persone o animali:
27 And you shall divide the prey equally, among those who went out to war and fought, and among the remainder of the multitude.	27 dividerai a metà la preda tra chi ha preso parte alla guerra e tutta la comunità.
28 And you shall separate a portion for the Lord from the portion of those who fought and were in the battle: one soul out of five hundred, as much from humans, as from oxen and donkeys and sheep.	28 Preleverai come contributo per il Signore l'uno per cinquecento delle persone, buoi, asini e pecore della parte spettante ai soldati che sono andati in guerra:
29 And you shall give it to Eleazar the priest, because these are the first-fruits of the Lord.	29 ne prenderete della loro metà e la darete al sacerdote Eleazaro, come prelievo per il Signore.
30 Likewise, from the half of the portion belonging to the sons of Israel, you shall receive the fiftieth head of humans, and of oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, and of all living things, and you shall give these to the Levites who stand watch over the care of the tabernacle of the Lord.”	30 Sulla metà dei figli d'Israele prenderai l'uno per cinquanta delle persone, buoi, asini, pecore e li darai ai leviti che hanno in custodia la dimora del Signore".
31 And Moses and Eleazar did just as the Lord had instructed.	31 Mosè e il sacerdote Eleazaro fecero come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.
32 Now the prey which the army had seized was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,	32 Or il bottino della razzia che avevano fatto i soldati dell'esercito era di 67 5.000 pecore,
33 seventy-two thousand oxen,	33 72.000 buoi,
34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,	34 61.000 asini
35 and thirty-two thousand human lives, of the female sex, who had not known men.	35 e 32.000 persone, cioè donne che non si erano unite con uomo.
36 And one half of the portion was given to those who had been in the battle: three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep.	36 La metà, cioè la parte di quelli andati in guerra, fu di 337.500 pecore,
37 From these, for the portion of the Lord, there were accounted: six hundred seventy-five sheep;	37 e il tributo per il Signore fu di seicentosettantacinque pecore;
38 and from the thirty-six thousand oxen, seventy-two oxen;	38 per i buoi, 36.000, di cui settantadue in tributo al Signore;
39 from the thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, sixty-one donkeys.	39 30.500 asini, di cui trentuno in tributo al Signore;
40 From the sixteen thousand human souls, there fell to the portion of the Lord thirty-two souls.	40 16.000 persone, di cui trentadue in tributo al Signore.
41 And Moses delivered the number of the first-fruits of the Lord to Eleazar the priest, just as had been commanded of him,	41 Mosè diede il tributo di prelievo del Signore al sacerdote Eleazaro, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.
42 from the one half portion belonging to the sons of Israel, which he had separated from the portion of those who had been in the battle.	42 Quanto alla metà dei figli d'Israele, che Mosè aveva diviso dagli uomini dell'esercito,
43 Yet truly, from the one half portion which fell to the remainder of the multitude, that is, from the three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,	43 la metà per la comunità fu di 337.500 pecore,
44 and from the thirty-six thousand oxen,	44 36.000 buoi,
45 and from the thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,	45 30.500 asini,
46 and from the sixteen thousand persons,	46 16.000 persone.
47 Moses took the fiftieth head, and gave it to the Levites who stand watch at the tabernacle of the Lord, just as the Lord had instructed.	47 Mosè, dalla metà spettante ai figli d'Israele, prese l'uno per cinquanta delle persone e degli animali e li diede ai leviti, che hanno in custodia la dimora del Signore, com'egli aveva ordinato a Mosè.
48 And when the leaders of the army, and the tribunes, and the centurions had approached Moses, they said:	48 I preposti alle migliaia dell'esercito, capi di migliaia e capi di centinaia, si avvicinarono a Mosè,
49 “We, your servants, have taken a census of the number of the fighting men, whom we had under our hand, and indeed not one was lacking.	49 e gli dissero: "I tuoi servi hanno fatto il censimento degli uomini di guerra che erano ai nostri ordini, e non ne manca nessuno.
50 For this reason, we offer as gifts to the Lord whatever gold each one was able to find amid the spoils, in anklets and arm bands, rings and bracelets, and little chains, so that you may intercede for us to the Lord.”	50 Vogliamo presentare in dono al Signore quello che ciascuno di noi ha trovato di oggetti d'oro: catenelle, braccialetti, anelli, orecchini, collane, per fare il rito di espiazione per noi davanti al Signore".
51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest received all the gold in its various kinds,	51 Mosè e il sacerdote Eleazaro presero da essi l'oro, tutti gli oggetti lavorati.
52 weighing sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels, from the tribunes and the centurions.	52 Tutto l'oro dell'offerta che i capi di migliaia e i capi di centinaia fecero per il Signore fu di 16.750 sicli.
53 For whatever each one had taken away in the spoils was his own.	53 Gli uomini dell'esercito tennero ognuno per sé quanto avevano razziato.
54 And having been accepted, they took it into the tabernacle of the testimony, as a memorial of the sons of Israel before the Lord.	54 Mosè e il sacerdote Eleazaro presero l'oro dei capi di migliaia e di centinaia e lo portarono alla tenda del convegno, in ricordo ai figli d'Israele, davanti al Signore.
