CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And the Lord prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.1 But the LORD sent a large fish, that swallowed Jonah; and he remained in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
And Jonah prayed to the Lord, his God, from the belly of the fish.2 From the belly of the fish Jonah said this prayer to the LORD, his God:
And he said: “I cried out to the Lord from my tribulation, and he heeded me. From the belly of hell, I cried out, and you heeded my voice.3 Out of my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me; From the midst of the nether world I cried for help, and you heard my voice.
And you have thrown me into the deep, in the heart of the sea, and a flood has encircled me. All your whirlpools and your waves have passed over me.4 For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the sea, and the flood enveloped me; All your breakers and your billows passed over me.
And I said: I am expelled from the sight of your eyes. Yet, truly, I will see your holy temple again.5 Then I said, "I am banished from your sight! yet would I again look upon your holy temple."
The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The abyss has walled me in. The ocean has covered my head.6 The waters swirled about me, threatening my life; the abyss enveloped me; seaweed clung about my head.
I descended to the base of the mountains. The bars of the earth have enclosed me forever. And you will raise up my life from corruption, Lord, my God.7 Down I went to the roots of the mountains; the bars of the nether world were closing behind me forever, But you brought my life up from the pit, O LORD, my God.
When my soul was in anguish within me, I called to mind the Lord, so that my prayer might come to you, to your holy temple.8 When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; My prayer reached you in your holy temple.
Those who in vain observe vanities, abandon their own mercy.9 Those who worship vain idols forsake their source of mercy.
But I, with a voice of praise, will sacrifice to you. I will repay whatever I have vowed to the Lord, because of my salvation.”10 But I, with resounding praise, will sacrifice to you; What I have vowed I will pay: deliverance is from the LORD.
And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.11 Then the LORD commanded the fish to spew Jonah upon the shore.
