Sirach 41

1 O death, how bitter is the memory of you: to a man who has peace in his substance,	1 Ô mort, que ton rappel est amer pour celui qui vit sans problèmes au milieu de ses biens, pour celui qui va de l’avant et qui réussit, qui a encore la santé pour manger!
2 to a quiet man, and to him whose ways are directed properly in all things, and who still has the strength to take nourishment.	2 Ô mort, que ta sentence est bonne pour celui qui est dans le besoin, que ses forces abandonnent, pour le vieillard usé qui perd la mémoire, qui se révolte et perd la patience!
3 O death, your judgment is good to the indigent man, and to him whose strength has diminished,	3 Ne redoute pas la sentence de la mort, souviens-toi de ceux qui t’ont précédé et qui te suivront.
4 who is failing due to old age, and who is anxious about all things, and to the unbelieving man who has lost patience.	4 Le Seigneur l’a décrétée pour tout être vivant: refuseras-tu ce qui a paru bon au Très-Haut? Que tu vives dix, cent, ou mille ans, personne n’y prendra garde au Séjour d’en bas.
5 Do not choose to dread the judgment of death. Remember the things that occurred before you, and the things that will occur after you. This judgment is from the Lord upon all flesh.	5 Les enfants des pécheurs feront une race détestable, bonne à remplir les maisons des méchants.
6 And what will happen to you is well-pleasing to the Most High, whether in ten, or one hundred, or one thousand years.	6 Les enfants des pécheurs perdront leur héritage, une malédiction reste attachée à leur race.
7 For death is no indictment of life.	7 Un père impie subira les reproches de ses enfants; c’est à cause de lui qu’ils seront déshonorés.
8 The sons of sinners, and those who pass their time in the manner of the houses of the impious, become sons of abominations.	8 Malheur à vous, hommes méchants qui avez abandonné la loi du Dieu Très-Haut.
9 The inheritance of the sons of sinners will perish, and continual disgrace will be with their offspring.	9 Vous n’êtes nés que pour vous faire maudire, et à votre mort vous n’emporterez qu’une malédiction.
10 The sons of an impious father will complain, for they are in disgrace because of him.	10 Tout ce qui vient de la terre retourne à la terre, et c’est ainsi que les impies passeront de la malédiction à la ruine.
11 Woe to you, impious men, who have abandoned the law of the Most High Lord!	11 Nous devons faire le deuil de notre corps, mais pour les pécheurs c’est leur nom même qui disparaîtra, n’évoquant rien de bon.
12 And when you are born, you will be born into a curse; and when you die, your portion will be in a curse.	12 Veille à l’honneur de ton nom, car il restera, plus durable que mille dépôts d’or.
13 All things that are from the earth shall return to the earth. Similarly, the impious will proceed from a curse unto perdition.	13 Une vie, même bonne, ne dure qu’un temps, tandis que la bonne renommée est là pour toujours.
14 The grieving of men is in their body, but the name of the impious will be wiped away.	14 Mes enfants, gardez mon enseignement et faites-le prospérer: si la sagesse reste cachée et le trésor enfoui, à quoi servent-ils?
15 Have concern for your good name. For this will continue with you, more so than a thousand precious and great treasures.	15 Mieux vaut cacher sa folie que cacher sa sagesse.
16 A good life has its number of days, but a good name will continue forever.	16 Je vais vous dire ce qui est vraiment honteux, car il ne faut pas avoir honte de n’importe quoi, même quand d’autres se font des idées fausses.
17 Sons, practice discipline peacefully. For what use is there in either concealed wisdom, or undiscovered treasure?	17 Soyez honteux: de votre inconduite devant vos père et mère; du mensonge devant un prince ou un puissant;
18 Better is the man who hides his foolishness than the man who hides his wisdom.	18 d’un crime devant un juge ou un magistrat; de vos manquements devant l’assemblée du peuple;
19 Yet truly, have respect for these things which proceed from my mouth.	19 d’une injustice devant ton compagnon et ton ami; d’un vol là où tu habites.
20 For it is not good to observe every reverence. And all things do not please all persons in their beliefs.	20 Tu dois avoir honte, pensant à la vérité de Dieu et à l’Alliance: de garder les pains pour toi-même,
21 Have shame of these things: of fornication before father and mother, and of a lie before the first leader and the powerful,	21 de ne pas savoir donner et recevoir, de ne pas répondre au salut d’autrui,
22 of a crime before a ruler or a judge, of iniquity before a congregation or a people,	22 de dévisager une prostituée, de ne pas regarder ta femme légitime,
23 of injustice before a companion or a friend, and of the place in which you live,	23 de t’approprier ce qui a été donné à d’autres, de regarder avec insistance une femme mariée,
24 of theft, and of the truth before God, and of the covenant, of reclining to eat bread, and of deceitfulness in giving or receiving,	24 d’être trop familier avec ta servante: ne t’approche pas de son lit!
25 of silence before those who greet you, of looking upon a woman of fornication, and of averting your face from a relative.	25 d’avoir insulté un ami, de reprocher après avoir donné,
26 You should not avert your face from your neighbor, nor should you take away a portion and not restore it.	26 de répéter ce que tu as entendu, de révéler un secret.
27 You should not stare at another man’s wife, and nor pursue his handmaid, nor approach her bed.	27 Si tu as honte de toutes ces choses, tous t’en sauront gré.
28 Avoid reproachful speeches before friends, and when you give, you should not place blame.
