He who loves his son will frequently chastise him, so that he may be happy in the very end, and not grope for the doors of his neighbors.1 Qui aime son fils lui prodigue le fouet, plus tard ce fils sera sa consolation.
He who instructs his son will be praised over him and will glory in him, in the midst of his household.2 Qui élève bien son fils en tirera satisfaction et parmi ses connaissances il s'en montrera fier.
He who teaches his son will make his enemy jealous, and in the midst of his friends, he will glory in him.3 Celui qui instruit son fils rend jaloux son ennemi et se montre joyeux devant ses amis.
When his father has died, it will be as if he were not dead. For he will have left behind someone who is like himself.4 Qu'un père vienne à mourir, c'est comme s'il n'était pas mort, car il laisse après lui un filsqui lui ressemble.
In his life, he saw him and rejoiced in him. And at his passing, he was not sorrowful, nor was he confounded in the sight of his enemies.5 Vivant, il a trouvé la joie dans sa présence, devant la mort il n'a pas eu de peine.
For he left behind himself a defender of his house against his enemies, and someone who will repay his friends with kindness.6 Contre ses ennemis il laisse un vengeur et pour ses amis quelqu'un qui leur rende leursbienfaits.
For the sake of the souls of his sons, he will bind up his wounds, and at every voice, his gut will be stirred up.7 Celui qui gâte son fils pansera ses blessures, à chacun de ses cris ses entrailles tressailliront.
An untamed horse becomes stubborn, and a child left to himself becomes headstrong.8 Un cheval mal dressé devient rétif, un enfant laissé à lui-même devient mal élevé.
Coddle a son, and he will make you afraid. Play with him, and he will make you sorrowful.9 Cajole ton enfant, il te terrorisera, joue avec lui, il te fera pleurer.
You should not laugh with him; otherwise you may have grief, and in the end, your teeth be clenched.10 Ne ris pas avec lui, si tu ne veux pas pleurer avec lui, tu finirais par grincer des dents.
You should not give him power in his youth, but you should not despise his thoughts.11 Ne lui laisse pas de liberté pendant sa jeunesse et ne ferme pas les yeux sur ses sottises.
Bow down his neck in his youth, and slap his sides while he is a child, lest perhaps he may become stubborn, and then he will not trust you, and so he will bring sorrow to your soul.12 Fais-lui courber l'échine pendant sa jeunesse, meurtris-lui les côtes tant qu'il est enfant, decrainte que, révolté, il ne te désobéisse et que tu n'en éprouves de la peine.
Instruct your son, and work with him, lest you give offense by his shameful behavior.13 Elève ton fils et forme-le bien, pour ne pas avoir à endurer son insolence.
Better is a healthy pauper with a strong constitution, than a wealthy man who is weak and afflicted by maladies.14 Mieux vaut un pauvre sain et vigoureux qu'un riche éprouvé dans son corps.
A healthy soul with the sanctity of justice is better than all the gold and silver. And a sound body is better than immense revenues.15 Santé et vigueur valent mieux que tout l'or du monde, un corps vigoureux mieux qu'uneimmense fortune.
There is no revenue above the revenue of a healthy body. And there is no delight above a joyful heart.16 Il n'y a richesse préférable à la santé ni bien-être supérieur à la joie du coeur.
Death is better than a bitter life. And eternal rest is better than continual sickness.17 Plutôt la mort qu'une vie chagrine, l'éternel repos qu'une maladie persistante.
Good things hidden in a closed mouth are like seats at a feast placed around a grave.18 Des mets à profusion devant une bouche fermée, telles sont les offrandes déposées sur unetombe.
What benefit is there in an offering to an idol? For it can neither eat, nor smell.19 Que sert l'offrande à une idole qui ne mange ni ne sent! Tel est celui que le Seigneurpersécute:
So is he who flees from the Lord, carrying the wages of his iniquity.20 il regarde et soupire, il est comme un eunuque qui étreint une vierge et soupire.
He sees with his eyes and groans, like a eunuch who embraces a virgin and sighs.21 Ne te laisse pas aller à la tristesse et ne t'abandonne pas aux idées noires.
You should not give your soul to sadness, and you should not afflict yourself by your own counsel.22 La joie du coeur, voilà la vie de l'homme, la gaîté, voilà qui prolonge ses jours.
The gladness of the heart is the life of a man, and it is a treasure of sanctity without defect. And the exultation of a man is length of life.23 Trompe tes soucis, console ton coeur, chasse la tristesse: car la tristesse en a perdubeaucoup, elle ne saurait apporter de profit.
Take pity on your own soul by pleasing God, and show self-restraint. Gather your heart into his sanctity, and drive sadness far away from yourself.24 Passion et colère abrègent les jours, les soucis font vieillir avant l'heure.
For sadness has killed many, and there is no usefulness in it.25 A coeur généreux, bon appétit: il se soucie de ce qu'il mange.
Envy and anger will diminish your days, and pensiveness will bring old age before its time.
A cheerful and good heart is like a feast. And its feasts are formed by diligence.
