Alleluia. Confess to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy is with every generation.1 Hallelujah! Give thanks to the LORD, who is good, whose love endures forever.
Let those who have been redeemed by the Lord say so: those whom he redeemed from the hand of the enemy and gathered from the regions,2 Who can tell the mighty deeds of the LORD, proclaim in full God's praise?
from the rising of the sun and its setting, from the north and from the sea.3 Happy those who do what is right, whose deeds are always just.
They wandered into solitude in a waterless place. They did not find the way of the city to be their dwelling place.4 Remember me, LORD, as you favor your people; come to me with your saving help,
They were hungry, and they were thirsty. Their soul fainted within them.5 That I may see the prosperity of your chosen, rejoice in the joy of your people, and glory with your heritage.
And they cried out to the Lord in tribulation, and he rescued them in their necessity.6 We have sinned like our ancestors; we have done wrong and are guilty.
And he led them in the right way, so that they might go forth to a city of habitation.7 Our ancestors in Egypt did not attend to your wonders. They did not remember your great love; they defied the Most High at the Red Sea.
Let his mercies confess to the Lord, and let his miracles confess to the sons of men.8 Yet he saved them for his name's sake to make his power known.
For he has satisfied the empty soul, and he has satisfied the hungry soul with good things:9 He roared at the Red Sea and it dried up. He led them through the deep as through a desert.
those sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death, shackled by extreme poverty and by iron.10 He rescued them from hostile hands, freed them from the power of the enemy.
For they exasperated the eloquence of God, and they irritated the deliberation of the Most High.11 The waters covered their oppressors; not one of them survived.
And their heart was brought low with hardships. They were weakened, and there was no one to help them.12 Then they believed his words and sang songs of praise.
And they cried out to the Lord in their tribulation, and he freed them from their distress.13 But they soon forgot all he had done; they had no patience for his plan.
And he led them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and he broke apart their chains.14 In the desert they gave way to their cravings, tempted God in the wasteland.
Let his mercies confess to the Lord, and let his miracles confess to the sons of men.15 So he gave them what they asked and sent among them a wasting disease.
For he has crushed the gates of brass and broken the iron bars.16 In the camp they challenged Moses and Aaron, the holy one of the LORD.
He has taken them up, from the way of their iniquity. For they were brought low, because of their injustices.17 The earth opened and swallowed Dathan, it closed on the followers of Abiram.
Their soul abhorred all food, and they drew near even to the gates of death.18 Against that company the fire blazed; flames consumed the wicked.
And they cried out to the Lord in their tribulation, and he delivered them in their necessity.19 At Horeb they fashioned a calf, worshiped a metal statue.
He sent his word, and he healed them, and he rescued them from their utter destruction.20 They exchanged their glorious God for the image of a grass-eating bull.
Let his mercies confess to the Lord, and let his miracles confess to the sons of men.21 They forgot the God who saved them, who did great deeds in Egypt,
And let them offer sacrifice with the sacrifice of praise, and let them announce his works in exultation.22 Amazing deeds in the land of Ham, fearsome deeds at the Red Sea.
Those who descend to the sea in ships, making their livelihood in the great waters:23 He would have decreed their destruction, had not Moses, the chosen leader, Withstood him in the breach to turn back his destroying anger.
these have seen the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep.24 Next they despised the beautiful land; they did not believe the promise.
He spoke: and a windstorm stood up, and its waves were exalted.25 In their tents they complained; they did not obey the LORD.
They ascend even to the heavens, and they descend even to the abyss. Their soul will waste away in distress.26 So with raised hand he swore to destroy them in the desert,
They were troubled, and they moved like a drunkard, and all their wisdom was consumed.27 To scatter their descendants among the nations, disperse them in foreign lands.
And they cried out to the Lord in their tribulation, and he led them out of their distress.28 They joined in the rites of Baal of Peor, ate food sacrificed to dead gods.
And he replaced the storm with a breeze, and its waves were stilled.29 They provoked him by their actions, and a plague broke out among them.
And they were joyful that it was stilled, and he led them into the haven that they desired.30 Then Phinehas rose to intervene, and the plague was brought to a halt.
Let his mercies confess to the Lord, and let his miracles confess to the sons of men.31 This was counted for him as a righteous deed for all generations to come.
And let them exalt him in the Church of the people, and praise him in the chair of the elders.32 At the waters of Meribah they angered God, and Moses suffered because of them.
He has placed rivers in the desert and sources of water in dry places,33 They so embittered his spirit that rash words crossed his lips.
a fruit-bearing land in the midst of brine, before the malice of those who dwell in it.34 They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them,
He has placed a desert in the midst of pools of waters, and a land without water in the midst of sources of water.35 But mingled with the nations and imitated their ways.
And he has gathered the hungry together there, and they constructed a city of habitation.36 They worshiped their idols and were ensnared by them.
And they sowed fields and planted vineyards, and they produced the fruit of nativity.37 They sacrificed to the gods their own sons and daughters,
And he blessed them, and they were multiplied exceedingly. And he did not diminish their beasts of burden.38 Shedding innocent blood, the blood of their own sons and daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, desecrating the land with bloodshed.
And they became few, and they were afflicted by the tribulation of evils and of sorrow.39 They defiled themselves by their actions, became adulterers by their conduct.
Contempt was poured over their leaders, and he caused them to wander in an impassable place, and not on the way.40 So the LORD grew angry with his people, abhorred his own heritage.
And he helped the poor out of destitution, and he stationed families like sheep.41 He handed them over to the nations, and their adversaries ruled them.
The upright will see, and they will rejoice. And every iniquity will block its mouth.42 Their enemies oppressed them, kept them under subjection.
Who is wise and will keep these things? And who will understand the mercies of the Lord?43 Many times did he rescue them, but they kept rebelling and scheming and were brought low by their own guilt.
Still God had regard for their affliction when he heard their wailing.
For their sake he remembered his covenant and relented in his abundant love,
Winning for them compassion from all who held them captive.
Save us, LORD, our God; gather us from among the nations That we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in praising you.
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! Let all the people say, Amen! Hallelujah!
