1 Then the people, seeing that Moses made a delay in descending from the mountain, gathered together against Aaron, and said: “Rise up, make us gods, who may go before us. But as for this man Moses, who led us away from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has befallen him.”	1 Il popolo, vedendo che Mosè indugiava nello scendere dal monte, si radunò intorno ad Aronne e gli disse: "Facci un dio che vada davanti a noi, perché di questo Mosè, l'uomo che ci ha fatto uscire dalla terra d'Egitto, non sappiamo che cosa ne sia".
2 And Aaron said to them, “Take the golden earrings from the ears of your wives, and your sons and daughters, and bring them to me.”	2 Aronne disse loro: "Staccate gli anelli d'oro pendenti dalle orecchie delle vostre donne, dei vostri figli, delle vostre figlie e portatemeli".
3 And the people did what he had commanded, carrying the earrings to Aaron.	3 Tutto il popolo staccò gli anelli d'oro che pendevano ai loro orecchi e li portarono ad Aronne.
4 And when he had received them, he formed these by the work of a casting furnace, and he made from these a molten calf. And they said: “These are your gods, O Israel, who led you away from the land of Egypt.”	4 Egli li prese dalle loro mani, li fece fondere in una forma e ne ricavò un vitello di metallo fuso. Allora dissero: "Ecco il tuo Dio, Israele, che ti ha fatto uscire dalla terra d'Egitto".
5 And when Aaron had seen it, he built an altar before it, and he cried out with a voice of proclamation, saying, “Tomorrow is the solemnity of the Lord.”	5 Aronne vide e costruì un altare davanti ad esso ed esclamò: "Domani è festa per il Signore".
6 And rising up in the morning, they offered holocausts, and peace victims, and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and they rose up to play.	6 L'indomani si alzarono e offrirono olocausti e presentarono sacrifici di comunione: il popolo si sedette a mangiare e bere; poi si alzarono per divertirsi.
7 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Go, descend. Your people, whom you led away from the land of Egypt, have sinned.	7 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Va', scendi, perché il tuo popolo, che hai fatto uscire dalla terra d'Egitto, si è pervertito.
8 They have quickly withdrawn from the way which you revealed to them. And they have made for themselves a molten calf, and they have worshiped it. And immolating victims to it, they have said: ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who led you away from the land of Egypt.’ ”	8 Si sono allontanati presto dal cammino che avevo loro ordinato, si sono fatti un vitello fuso, si sono prostrati davanti ad esso, gli hanno sacrificato e hanno detto: "Ecco il tuo Dio, Israele, che ti ha fatto uscire dalla terra d'Egitto".
9 And again, the Lord said to Moses: “I discern that this people is stiff-necked.	9 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Ho visto questo popolo, ed ecco è un popolo duro di nuca.
10 Release me, so that my fury may be enraged against them, and I may destroy them, and then I will make of you a great nation.”	10 Ora lasciami fare: la mia ira si accende contro di loro e li divora, mentre di te farò una grande nazione".
11 Then Moses prayed to the Lord his God, saying: “Why, O Lord, is your fury enraged against your people, whom you led away from the land of Egypt, with great strength and with a mighty hand?	11 Mosè addolcì il volto del Signore, suo Dio e disse: "Perché, Signore, la tua ira si accende contro il tuo popolo che hai fatto uscire dalla terra d'Egitto con grande potenza e con mano forte?
12 I beg you, let not the Egyptians say, ‘He cleverly led them away, so that he could put them to death in the mountains and destroy them from the earth.’ Let your anger be quieted and appeased concerning the wickedness of your people.	12 Perché gli Egiziani dovrebbero dire: li ha fatti uscire per cattiveria, per ucciderli sui monti e per sterminarli dalla faccia della terra? Recedi dall'ardore della tua ira e risparmia il male al tuo popolo.
13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your very self, saying: ‘I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven. And this entire land, about which I have spoken, I will give to your offspring. And you shall possess it forever.’ ”	13 Ricordati dei tuoi servi Abramo, Isacco e Israele, ai quali hai giurato per te stesso e ai quali hai detto: "Moltiplicherò il vostro seme come le stelle del cielo e darò tutta questa terra, di cui ti ho parlato, ai tuoi discendenti che la erediteranno per sempre".
14 And the Lord was appeased from doing the evil which he had spoken against his people.	14 Il Signore abbandonò il proposito di fare del male al suo popolo.
15 And Moses returned from the mountain, carrying the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, written on both sides,	15 Mosè si volse e scese dal monte: aveva nella sua mano le due tavole della testimonianza, tavole scritte su due lati, da una parte e dall'altra.
16 and accomplished by the work of God. Also, the writing of God was engraved on the tablets.	16 Le tavole erano opera di Dio, la scrittura era scrittura di Dio, incisa sulle tavole.
17 Then Joshua, hearing the tumult of the people shouting, said to Moses: “The outcry of battle is heard in the camp.”	17 Giosuè udì la voce del popolo che faceva baccano e disse a Mosè: "C'è rumore di guerra nell'accampamento".
18 But he responded: “It is not the clamor of men being exhorted to battle, nor the shout of men being compelled to flee. But I hear the voice of singing.”	18 Mosè rispose: "Non voce di canti di vittoria, né voce di canti di sconfitta: voci di canti alternati io sento".
19 And when he had approached to the camp, he saw the calf and the dances. And being very angry, he threw down the tablets from his hand, and he broke them at the base of the mountain.	19 Quando si avvicinò all'accampamento, vide il vitello e le danze: l'ira di Mosè si accese; egli scagliò dalla mano le tavole e le ruppe ai piedi del monte.
20 And seizing the calf, which they had made, he burnt it and crushed it, even to dust, which he scattered into water. And he gave from it to the sons of Israel to drink.	20 Prese il vitello che avevano fatto, lo bruciò nel fuoco, lo frantumò fino a farlo diventare polvere, la sparse sulla superficie dell'acqua e la fece bere ai figli d'Israele.
21 And he said to Aaron, “What has this people done to you, so that you would bring upon them the greatest sin?”	21 Mosè disse ad Aronne: "Che cosa ti ha fatto questo popolo, per averlo indotto in un grande peccato?".
22 And he answered him: “Let not my lord be indignant. For you know this people, that they are prone to evil.	22 Aronne disse: "Non si accenda l'ira del mio signore: tu sai come il popolo è inclinato al male.
23 They said to me: ‘Make gods for us, who may go before us. For this Moses, who led us away from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has befallen him.’	23 Essi mi dissero: "Facci un dio che vada davanti a noi, perché di quel Mosè, l'uomo che ci ha fatto uscire dalla terra d'Egitto, non sappiamo che cosa ne sia".
24 And I said to them, ‘Which of you has gold?’ And they took it and gave it to me. And I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.”	24 E dissi a loro: "Chi ha dell'oro se lo strappi". Me lo diedero e lo gettai nel fuoco. Ne uscì questo vitello".
25 Therefore, Moses, seeing that the people were naked (for Aaron had stripped them because of the disgrace of their sordidness, and he had set them naked among their enemies),	25 Mosè vide che il popolo era sfrenato, poiché Aronne l'aveva lasciato sfrenare, tanto da essere poca cosa per i loro avversari.
26 and standing at the gate of the camp, said: “If anyone is for the Lord, let him join with me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.	26 Mosè si tenne sulla porta dell'accampamento e disse: "Chi è per il Signore, a me!". Vicino a lui si radunarono tutti i figli di Levi.
27 And he said to them: “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Let a man place his sword at his thigh. Go forth, and then return, from gate to gate, through the midst of the camp, and let each one kill his brother, and friend, and neighbor.”	27 Disse loro: "Così dice il Signore, Dio d'Israele: "Metta ognuno la propria spada al fianco, passate e ripassate da porta a porta nell'accampamento e uccidete a chi suo fratello, a chi il suo amico, a chi il suo vicino".
28 And the sons of Levi did according to the words of Moses, and there fell on that day about twenty-three thousand men.	28 I figli di Levi fecero come aveva detto Mosè e del popolo caddero in quel giorno circa tremila uomini.
29 And Moses said: “On this day, you have consecrated your hands to the Lord, each one in his son and in his brother, so that a blessing may be given to you.”	29 Mosè disse: "Ricevete oggi l'investitura del Signore, perché ognuno fu contro suo figlio e contro suo fratello, affinché oggi vi dia benedizione".
30 Then, when the next day arrived, Moses spoke to the people: “You have sinned the greatest sin. I will ascend to the Lord. Perhaps, in some way, I might be able to entreat him for your wickedness.”	30 Il giorno dopo Mosè disse al popolo: "Voi avete commesso un grande peccato, ma ora salirò dal Signore: forse otterrò ancora il perdono del vostro peccato".
31 And returning to the Lord, he said: “I beg you, this people has sinned the greatest sin, and they have made for themselves gods of gold. Either release them from this offense,	31 Mosè ritornò dal Signore e disse: "Ah, questo popolo ha commesso un grande peccato, e si sono fatti per sé un dio d'oro:
32 or, if you do not, then delete me from the book that you have written.”	32 e ora, se tu sopportassi il loro peccato! Se no, cancellami dal tuo libro che hai scritto".
33 And the Lord answered him: “Whoever has sinned against me, him I will delete from my book.	33 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Chi ha peccato contro di me, quello cancellerò dal mio libro.
34 But as for you, go and lead this people where I have told you. My angel will go before you. Then, on the day of retribution, I will also visit this sin of theirs.”	34 E ora va', conduci il popolo dove ti ho detto. Ecco, il mio angelo andrà davanti a te; ma nel giorno della mia visita li punirò del loro peccato".
35 Therefore, the Lord struck the people for the guilt of the calf, which Aaron had made.	35 Il Signore colpì il popolo, perché avevano fatto il vitello, fuso da Aronne.
