Then the people, seeing that Moses made a delay in descending from the mountain, gathered together against Aaron, and said: “Rise up, make us gods, who may go before us. But as for this man Moses, who led us away from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has befallen him.”1 Cuando el pueblo vio que Moisés tardaba en bajar del monte, se reunió el pueblo en torno a Aarón y le dijeron: «Anda, haznos un dios que vaya delante de nosotros, ya que no sabemos qué ha sido de Moisés, el hombre que nos sacó de la tierra de Egipto.»
And Aaron said to them, “Take the golden earrings from the ears of your wives, and your sons and daughters, and bring them to me.”2 Aarón les respondió: «Quitad los pendientes de oro de las orejas de vuestras mujeres, de vuestros hijos y vuestras hijas, y traédmelos.»
And the people did what he had commanded, carrying the earrings to Aaron.3 Y todo el pueblo se quitó los pendientes de oro que llevaba en las orejas, y los entregó a Aarón.
And when he had received them, he formed these by the work of a casting furnace, and he made from these a molten calf. And they said: “These are your gods, O Israel, who led you away from the land of Egypt.”4 Los tomó él de sus manos, hizo un molde y fundió un becerro.
And when Aaron had seen it, he built an altar before it, and he cried out with a voice of proclamation, saying, “Tomorrow is the solemnity of the Lord.”5 Viendo esto Aarón, erigió un altar ante el becerro y anunció: «Mañana habrá fiesta en honor de Yahveh.»
And rising up in the morning, they offered holocausts, and peace victims, and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and they rose up to play.6 Al día siguiente se levantaron de madrugada y ofrecieron holocaustos y presentaron sacrificios de comunión.
Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Go, descend. Your people, whom you led away from the land of Egypt, have sinned.7 Entonces habló Yahveh a Moisés, y dijo: «¡Anda, baja! Porque tu pueblo, el que sacaste de la tierra de Egipto, ha pecado.
They have quickly withdrawn from the way which you revealed to them. And they have made for themselves a molten calf, and they have worshiped it. And immolating victims to it, they have said: ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who led you away from the land of Egypt.’
And again, the Lord said to Moses: “I discern that this people is stiff-necked.9 Y dijo Yahveh a Moisés: «Ya veo que este pueblo es un pueblo de dura cerviz.
Release me, so that my fury may be enraged against them, and I may destroy them, and then I will make of you a great nation.”10 Déjame ahora que se encienda mi ira contra ellos y los devore; de ti, en cambio, haré un gran pueblo.»
Then Moses prayed to the Lord his God, saying: “Why, O Lord, is your fury enraged against your people, whom you led away from the land of Egypt, with great strength and with a mighty hand?11 Pero Moisés trató de aplacar a Yahveh su Dios, diciendo: “¿Por qué, oh Yahveh, ha de encenderse tu ira contra tu pueblo, el que tú sacaste de la tierra de Egipto con gran poder y mano fuerte?
I beg you, let not the Egyptians say, ‘He cleverly led them away, so that he could put them to death in the mountains and destroy them from the earth.’
Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your very self, saying: ‘I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven. And this entire land, about which I have spoken, I will give to your offspring. And you shall possess it forever.’
And the Lord was appeased from doing the evil which he had spoken against his people.14 Y Yahveh renunció a lanzar el mal con que había amenazado a su pueblo.
And Moses returned from the mountain, carrying the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, written on both sides,15 Volvióse Moisés y bajó del monte, con las dos tablas del Testimonio en su mano, tablas escritas por ambos lados; por una y otra cara estaban escritas.
and accomplished by the work of God. Also, the writing of God was engraved on the tablets.16 Las tablas eran obra de Dios, y la escritura, grabada sobre las mismas, era escritura de Dios.
Then Joshua, hearing the tumult of the people shouting, said to Moses: “The outcry of battle is heard in the camp.”17 Cuando Josué oyó la voz del pueblo que gritaba, dijo a Moisés: «Gritos de guerra en el campamento.»
But he responded: “It is not the clamor of men being exhorted to battle, nor the shout of men being compelled to flee. But I hear the voice of singing.”18 Respondió Moisés: «No son gritos de victoria, ni alarido de derrota. Cantos a coro es lo que oigo.»
And when he had approached to the camp, he saw the calf and the dances. And being very angry, he threw down the tablets from his hand, and he broke them at the base of the mountain.19 Cuando Moisés llegó cerca del campamento y vio el becerro y las danzas, ardió en ira, arrojó de su mano las tablas y las hizo añicos al pie del monte.
And seizing the calf, which they had made, he burnt it and crushed it, even to dust, which he scattered into water. And he gave from it to the sons of Israel to drink.20 Luego tomó el becerro que habían hecho, lo quemó y lo molió hasta reducirlo a polvo, que esparció en el agua, y se lo dio a beber a los israelitas.
And he said to Aaron, “What has this people done to you, so that you would bring upon them the greatest sin?”21 Y dijo Moisés a Aarón: «¿Qué te hizo este pueblo para que hayas traído sobre él tan gran pecado?»
And he answered him: “Let not my lord be indignant. For you know this people, that they are prone to evil.22 Aarón respondió: «No se encienda la ira de mi señor. Tú mismo sabes que este pueblo es inclinado al mal.
They said to me: ‘Make gods for us, who may go before us. For this Moses, who led us away from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has befallen him.’23 Me dijeron: “Haznos un dios que vaya delante de nosotros, ya que no sabemos qué le ha sucedido a Moisés, el hombre que nos sacó de la tierra de Egipto.”
And I said to them, ‘Which of you has gold?’ And they took it and gave it to me. And I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.”24 Yo les contesté: “El que tenga oro despréndase.”
Therefore, Moses, seeing that the people were naked (for Aaron had stripped them because of the disgrace of their sordidness, and he had set them naked among their enemies),25 Vio Moisés al pueblo desenfrenado - pues Aarón les había permitido entregarse a la idolatría en medio de sus adversarios -
and standing at the gate of the camp, said: “If anyone is for the Lord, let him join with me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.26 y se puso Moisés a la puerta del campamento, y exclamó: «¡A mí los de Yahveh!» y se le unieron todos los hijos de Leví.
And he said to them: “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Let a man place his sword at his thigh. Go forth, and then return, from gate to gate, through the midst of the camp, and let each one kill his brother, and friend, and neighbor.”27 El les dijo: «Así dice Yahveh, el Dios de Israel: Cíñase cada uno su espada al costado; pasad y repasad por el campamento de puerta en puerta, y matad cada uno a su hermano, a su amigo y a su pariente.»
And the sons of Levi did according to the words of Moses, and there fell on that day about twenty-three thousand men.28 Cumplieron los hijos de Leví la orden de Moisés; y cayeron aquel día unos 3000 hombres del pueblo.
And Moses said: “On this day, you have consecrated your hands to the Lord, each one in his son and in his brother, so that a blessing may be given to you.”29 Y dijo Moisés: «Hoy habéis recibido la investidura como sacerdotes de Yahveh, cada uno a costa de vuestros hijos y vuestros hermanos, para que él os dé hoy la bendición.»
Then, when the next day arrived, Moses spoke to the people: “You have sinned the greatest sin. I will ascend to the Lord. Perhaps, in some way, I might be able to entreat him for your wickedness.”30 Al día siguiente dijo Moisés al pueblo: «Habéis cometido un gran pecado.
And returning to the Lord, he said: “I beg you, this people has sinned the greatest sin, and they have made for themselves gods of gold. Either release them from this offense,31 Volvió Moisés donde Yahveh y dijo: «¡Ay! Este pueblo ha cometido un gran pecado al hacerse un dios de oro.
or, if you do not, then delete me from the book that you have written.”32 Con todo, si te dignas perdonar su pecado..., y si no, bórrame del libro que has escrito.»
And the Lord answered him: “Whoever has sinned against me, him I will delete from my book.33 Yahveh respondió a Moisés: Al que peque contra mí, le borraré yo de mi libro.
But as for you, go and lead this people where I have told you. My angel will go before you. Then, on the day of retribution, I will also visit this sin of theirs.”34 Ahora ve y conduce al pueblo adonde te he dicho.
Therefore, the Lord struck the people for the guilt of the calf, which Aaron had made.35 Y Yahveh castigó al pueblo a causa del becerro fabricado por Aarón.
