Then Judith said to all the people: “Hear me, brothers. Suspend this head over our walls.1 Então Judite disse a todo o povo: Ouvi-me, irmãos, pendurai esta cabeça no alto de nossas muralhas.
And, as soon as the sun rises, let everyone take up his weapons and go out to attack, not going down all the way, but only to seem as if making an assault.2 Quando o sol se levantar, tome cada um as suas armas e saí com ímpeto, não para descerdes simplesmente (até o vale), mas como para atacá-los.
Then the scouts will have to hurry to awaken their leader for the fight.3 Será necessário que as sentinelas corram a acordar o seu general para o combate.
And when their commanders rush into the tabernacle of Holofernes, and they find his headless body wallowing in his blood, fear will fall over them.4 Quando os seus chefes tiverem corrido à tenda de Holofernes e o encontrarem decapitado, jazendo no seu próprio sangue, serão tomados de pavor.
And when you realize that they are fleeing, go after them in security, for the Lord will crush them under your feet.”5 E quando os virdes fugir, persegui-os destemidamente, porque o Senhor os esmagará sob os vossos pés.
Then Achior, seeing the power that the God of Israel had wrought, left behind the rituals of the Gentiles. He believed in God, and he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and he was placed among the people of Israel, and so were all the succession of his kindred, even until this present day.6 Então Aquior, vendo o poder que manifestara o Deus de Israel, abandonou o culto pagão, creu em Deus, circuncidou-se e foi incorporado ao povo de Israel, assim como toda a sua descendência até o dia de hoje.
And soon, at the rising of day, they suspended the head of Holofernes above the walls, and every man took up his weapons, and they went out with a great uproar and howling.7 Logo que raiou o dia, penduraram nas muralhas a cabeça de Holofernes, cada um tomou as suas armas e saíram fazendo um grande alarido e soltando gritos agudos.
When the scouts saw this, they rushed to the tent of Holofernes.8 Vendo isto, correram as sentinelas à tenda de Holofernes.
Moreover, those who were in the tent came and made a loud noise before the entrance to the bedchamber, hoping to awaken him by an attempt at skillful noise-making, not by intruding on him, so that Holofernes might be roused from sleep.9 Os que estavam na tenda vieram (ver) e fizeram grande barulho à porta do quarto para o despertar, e aumentavam cada vez mais o tumulto para que Holofernes acordasse com o ruído, sem que houvesse necessidade (de entrar) para o acordar.
For no one dared to knock, or to open and enter, the bedchamber of the powerful leader of the Assyrians.10 Porque ninguém ousava bater na porta nem entrar no quarto do marechal dos assírios.
But when his commanders and tribunes had arrived, with all the chiefs of the army of the king of the Assyrians, they said to the chamberlains:11 Mas chegando os generais com os tribunos e com todos os oficiais do exército do rei dos assírios, ordenaram aos camareiros:
“Enter and awaken him, for the mice have come out of their holes, intending to challenge us to fight.”12 Entrai e despertai-o, porque os ratos saíram de seus buracos e se atrevem a nos provocar ao combate.
Then Vagao, entering his bedchamber, stood before the curtain, and he made a clapping noise with his hands. For he suspected that he was sleeping with Judith.13 Então Vagao, entrando no quarto, parou diante da cortina e bateu com as mãos, porque supunha que ele dormia com Judite.
But when, with attentiveness, he perceived no motion of anyone reclining, he approached the curtain. And lifting it up, he saw the dead body of Holofernes, without a head, lying on the ground, soaked in his own blood. He cried out with a loud voice and weeping, and he tore his garments.14 Aplicando, porém, os ouvidos e não percebendo movimento algum de um homem que dorme, aproximou- se da cortina e a levantou. À vista do cadáver de Holofernes decapitado, que jazia por terra num charco de sangue, soltou um forte grito, rompeu em lágrimas e rasgou as suas vestes.
And he entered the tent of Judith and did not find her. And he ran out to the people,15 Entrou então na tenda de Judite e não a encontrou. Correu para fora e disse ao povo:
and he said: “One Hebrew woman has caused confusion in the house of Nebuchadnezzar the king. For behold, Holofernes lies on the ground, and his head is not with him.”16 Uma judia pôs a confusão na casa do rei Nabucodonosor: Holofernes jaz ali caído por terra, e a sua cabeça não está com o corpo!
Now when the leaders of the army of the Assyrians had heard this, they all tore their garments, and an intolerable fear and trembling fell over them, and their minds were greatly disturbed.17 Ouvindo estas palavras, todos os oficiais do exército assírio rasgaram suas vestes, um terror e um espanto extremos os invadiram, e os seus espíritos ficaram completamente desorientados, e um clamor indescritível levantou-se do acampamento.
And there was an unprecedented outcry in the midst of their camp.
