1 Then Judith said to all the people: “Hear me, brothers. Suspend this head over our walls.	1 Quindi Giuditta disse loro: "Ascoltatemi, fratelli! Prendete questa testa e appendetela sugli spalti delle vostre mura.
2 And, as soon as the sun rises, let everyone take up his weapons and go out to attack, not going down all the way, but only to seem as if making an assault.	2 Quando poi apparirà la luce del mattino e il sole sorgerà sulla terra, ognuno prenda la propria armatura di guerra e ogni uomo valido esca dalla città. Iniziate l'azione contro di loro come se voleste scendere nella pianura contro l'avanguardia degli Assiri, ma in realtà non scenderete.
3 Then the scouts will have to hurry to awaken their leader for the fight.	3 Questi, prendendo le loro armature, accorreranno nel loro accampamento e sveglieranno i generali dell'esercito assiro, si precipiteranno verso la tenda di Oloferne, ma non lo troveranno; si lasceranno prendere dal terrore e fuggiranno davanti a noi.
4 And when their commanders rush into the tabernacle of Holofernes, and they find his headless body wallowing in his blood, fear will fall over them.	4 Allora voi e tutti gli abitanti dell'intero territorio d'Israele inseguiteli e abbatteteli sul loro cammino.
5 And when you realize that they are fleeing, go after them in security, for the Lord will crush them under your feet.”	5 Ma prima di compiere ciò, chiamatemi Achior, l'ammonita, perché veda e riconosca colui che ha disprezzato la casa d'Israele e che l'ha inviato tra noi per destinarlo alla morte".
6 Then Achior, seeing the power that the God of Israel had wrought, left behind the rituals of the Gentiles. He believed in God, and he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and he was placed among the people of Israel, and so were all the succession of his kindred, even until this present day.	6 Fu fatto venire Achior dalla casa di Ozia. Quando venne e vide la testa di Oloferne nella mano di un uomo in mezzo all'assemblea del popolo, cadde bocconi a terra e svenne.
7 And soon, at the rising of day, they suspended the head of Holofernes above the walls, and every man took up his weapons, and they went out with a great uproar and howling.	7 Quando l'ebbero risollevato, si gettò ai piedi di Giuditta e prostrato davanti a lei disse: "Benedetta sei tu in tutte le tende di Giuda e fra tutti i popoli, che saranno presi da meraviglia quando udranno il tuo nome!
8 When the scouts saw this, they rushed to the tent of Holofernes.	8 Ora raccontami tutto quanto hai compiuto in questi giorni". Giuditta, stando in mezzo al popolo, gli raccontò tutto ciò che aveva fatto dal giorno in cui si era allontanata fino al momento in cui parlava loro.
9 Moreover, those who were in the tent came and made a loud noise before the entrance to the bedchamber, hoping to awaken him by an attempt at skillful noise-making, not by intruding on him, so that Holofernes might be roused from sleep.	9 Quando ebbe cessato di parlare, il popolo scoppiò in alte esclamazioni di giubilo e riempì la città di grida festose.
10 For no one dared to knock, or to open and enter, the bedchamber of the powerful leader of the Assyrians.	10 Achior, vedendo quanto aveva fatto il Dio d'Israele, credette fermamente in Dio, si fece circoncidere la carne del prepuzio e fu aggregato alla casa d'Israele fino al presente.
11 But when his commanders and tribunes had arrived, with all the chiefs of the army of the king of the Assyrians, they said to the chamberlains:	11 Quando spuntò il mattino, appesero la testa di Oloferne alle mura; ognuno impugnò le proprie armi e quindi, distribuiti in schiere, uscirono verso i pendii della montagna.
12 “Enter and awaken him, for the mice have come out of their holes, intending to challenge us to fight.”	12 Quando li videro, gli Assiri mandarono ad informare i loro capi; questi corsero dai generali, dai chiliarchi e da tutti gli ufficiali.
13 Then Vagao, entering his bedchamber, stood before the curtain, and he made a clapping noise with his hands. For he suspected that he was sleeping with Judith.	13 Poi si recarono alla tenda di Oloferne e dissero a colui che era preposto a tutte le sue cose: "Sveglia il nostro signore, perché quegli schiavi hanno avuto l'ardire di scendere a battaglia contro di noi, per farsi annientare completamente".
14 But when, with attentiveness, he perceived no motion of anyone reclining, he approached the curtain. And lifting it up, he saw the dead body of Holofernes, without a head, lying on the ground, soaked in his own blood. He cried out with a loud voice and weeping, and he tore his garments.	14 Bagoa entrò e bussò alla cortina della tenda; pensava infatti che egli dormisse con Giuditta.
15 And he entered the tent of Judith and did not find her. And he ran out to the people,	15 Siccome nessuno si faceva sentire, aprì, entrò nella camera e lo trovò morto, disteso al suolo senza la testa che gli era stata portata via.
16 and he said: “One Hebrew woman has caused confusion in the house of Nebuchadnezzar the king. For behold, Holofernes lies on the ground, and his head is not with him.”	16 Allora si mise a gridare con pianti e lamenti urlando con forza e strappandosi le vesti.
17 Now when the leaders of the army of the Assyrians had heard this, they all tore their garments, and an intolerable fear and trembling fell over them, and their minds were greatly disturbed.	17 Poi entrò nella tenda dove era alloggiata Giuditta e non la trovò. Allora si precipitò fuori davanti al popolo gridando:
18 And there was an unprecedented outcry in the midst of their camp.	18 "Quegli schiavi hanno agito perfidamente! Una sola donna ebrea ha gettato la vergogna sulla casa del re Nabucodònosor. Ecco, Oloferne giace a terra e la testa non è più su di lui!".
	19 Udite queste parole, i capi dell'esercito assiro lacerarono i loro mantelli con l'animo completamente sconvolto ed elevarono in mezzo all'accampamento altissime grida e urla di dolore.
