NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
The men of Ephraim gathered together and crossed over to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah, "Why do you go on to fight with the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We will burn your house over you."1 Ecce autem convocatus vir Ephraim transiit contra aqui lonem, et dixerunt ad Iephte: “ Quare vadens ad pugnam contra filios Ammon vocare nos noluisti, ut pergeremus tecum? Igitur incendemus domum tuam super te ”.
Jephthah answered them, "My soldiers and I were engaged in a critical contest with the Ammonites. I summoned you, but you did not rescue me from their power.2 Quibus ille respondit: “ Disceptatio erat mihi et populo meo contra filios Ammon vehemens, vocavique vos, ut mihi praeberetis auxilium, et facere noluistis.
When I saw that you would not effect a rescue, I took my life in my own hand and went on to the Ammonites, and the LORD delivered them into my power. Why, then, do you come up against me this day to fight with me?"3 Quod cernens posui in manibus meis animam meam transivique ad filios Ammon, et tradidit eos Dominus in manus meas. Quid commerui, ut hodie adversum me consurgatis in proelium? ”.
Then Jephthah called together all the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim, whom they defeated; for the Ephraimites had said, "You of Gilead are Ephraimite fugitives in territory belonging to Ephraim and Manasseh."4 Vocatis itaque ad se cunctis viris Galaad, pugnabat contra Ephraim. Percusseruntque viri Galaad Ephraim, quia dixerat: “ Fugitivi de Ephraim estis; Galaad habitat in medio Ephraim et Manasse ”.
The Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan toward Ephraim. When any of the fleeing Ephraimites said, "Let me pass," the men of Gilead would say to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he answered, "No!"5 Occupaveruntque Galaaditae vada Iordanis, per quae Ephraim reversurus erat. Cumque venisset ad ea de Ephraim numero fugiens atque dixisset: “ Obsecro, ut me transire permittatis ”, dicebant ei Galaaditae: “ Numquid Ephrathaeus es? ”. Quo dicente: “ Non sum ”,
they would ask him to say "Shibboleth." If he said "Sibboleth," not being able to give the proper pronunciation, they would seize him and kill him at the fords of the Jordan. Thus forty-two thousand Ephraimites fell at that time.6 interrogabant eum: “ Dic ergo: Scibboleth ” (quod interpretatur Spica). Qui respondebat: “ Sibboleth ”, illud recte exprimere non valens. Statimque apprehensum iugulabant in ipso Iordanis transitu. Et ceciderunt in illo tempore de Ephraim quadraginta duo milia.
