Job 34

1 Then Elihu continued and said:	1 Eliu seguitò dicendo:
2 Hear, O wise men, my discourse, and you that have knowledge, hear me!	2 "Ascoltate, o saggi, le mie parole, e voi, dotti, prestatemi l'orecchio!
3 For the ear tests words, as the taste does food.	3 Poiché l'orecchio valuta i discorsi, come il palato assaggia il cibo.
4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn between us what is good.	4 Esaminiamo tra noi la questione, indaghiamo tra noi ciò che è bene.
5 For Job has said, "I am innocent, but God has taken what is my due.	5 Ora Giobbe ha affermato: "Sono innocente, ma Dio mi nega giustizia.
6 Notwithstanding my right I am set at nought; in my wound the arrow rankles, sinless though I am."	6 Nonostante la mia ragione, passo per bugiardo; una freccia mi ha colpito a morte, benché non abbia peccato".
7 What man is like Job? He drinks in blasphemies like water,	7 Chi è come Giobbe, che beve il sarcasmo come acqua,
8 Keeps company with evildoers and goes along with wicked men,	8 si associa ai malfattori e va in compagnia degli iniqui?
9 When he says, "It profits a man nought that he is pleasing to God."	9 Infatti ha affermato: "L'uomo non guadagna nulla nel cercare il gradimento di Dio".
10 Therefore, men of understanding, hearken to me: far be it from God to do wickedness; far from the Almighty to do wrong!	10 Perciò, uomini di senno, ascoltatemi! Lungi da Dio il fare il male e dall'Onnipotente la perfidia!
11 Rather, he requites men for their conduct, and brings home to a man his way of life.	11 Invece egli rende all'uomo secondo le sue opere e tratta ciascuno secondo la sua condotta.
12 Surely, God cannot act wickedly, the Almighty cannot violate justice.	12 No, in verità, Dio non fa il male, e l'Onnipotente non viola il diritto.
13 Who gave him government over the earth, or who else set all the land in its place?	13 E' forse un altro che gli ha affidato la terra, e un altro che lo ha incaricato del mondo intero?
14 If he were to take back his spirit to himself, withdraw to himself his breath,	14 Se egli non pensasse che a se stesso e ritirasse a sé il suo spirito e il suo respiro,
15 All flesh would perish together, and man would return to the dust.	15 morirebbe all'istante ogni creatura e l'uomo ritornerebbe in polvere.
16 Now, do you, O Job, hear this! Hearken to the words I speak!	16 Se sei intelligente, ascolta questo, presta orecchio al suono delle mie parole!
17 Can an enemy of justice indeed be in control, or will you condemn the supreme Just One,	17 Un nemico della giustizia potrebbe forse governare? Osi tu condannare il sommo Giusto?
18 Who says to a king, "You are worthless!" and to nobles, "You are wicked!"	18 Si dice forse ad un re: "Iniquo"? e ai grandi: "Malvagi"?
19 Who neither favors the person of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor? For they are all the work of his hands;	19 Egli non è parziale in favore dei prìncipi e non preferisce il ricco al povero, perché tutti sono opera delle sue mani.
20 in a moment they die, even at midnight. He brings on nobles, and takes them away, removing the powerful without lifting a hand;	20 In un istante essi muoiono nel cuore della notte; il popolo si agita ed essi spariscono, si rimuove il tiranno senza sforzo.
21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he beholds all his steps.	21 Perché Dio ha gli occhi sulla condotta dell'uomo e osserva tutti i suoi passi.
22 There is no darkness so dense that evildoers can hide in it.	22 Non vi sono tenebre né oscurità, dove si possano nascondere i malfattori.
23 For he forewarns no man of his time to come before God in judgment.	23 Poiché non si pone all'uomo un termine, perché compaia in giudizio davanti a Dio.
24 Without a trial he breaks the mighty, and sets others in their stead,	24 Senza fare inchiesta egli fiacca i potenti e mette altri al loro posto.
25 Therefore he discerns their works; he turns at night and crushes them.	25 Poiché egli sventa le loro manovre; in una notte li travolge e sono schiacciati.
	26 Come malvagi li colpisce alla vista di tutti.
27 Because they turned away from him and heeded none of his ways,	27 Infatti essi si sono allontanati da lui, senza curarsi delle sue vie,
28 But caused the cries of the poor to reach him, so that he heard the plea of the afflicted.	28 fino a far giungere verso di lui il grido dei poveri; ed egli udì il lamento degli oppressi.
29 If he remains tranquil, who then can condemn? If he hides his face, who then can behold him?	29 Ma se resta impassibile, chi lo condannerà? Se nasconde la sua faccia, chi potrà vederlo? Egli pertanto veglia sui popoli come sui singoli,
	30 non volendo che l'empio regni e che si pongano inciampi al popolo.
31 When anyone says to God, "I was misguided; I will offend no more.	31 Si può dunque dire a Dio: "Porto la pena, senza aver fatto il male"?
32 Teach me wherein I have sinned; if I have done wrong, I will do so no more,"	32 Ciò che sfugge alla mia vista, mostramelo tu; se ho commesso il male, non lo farò più.
33 Would you then say that God must punish, since you reject what he is doing? It is you who must choose, not I; speak, therefore, what you know.	33 Dovrebbe egli retribuire secondo le tue norme, dato che tu rifiuti il suo giudizio? Poiché tu devi scegliere e non io, di' quanto sai!
34 Men of understanding will say to me, every wise man who hears my views:	34 Gli uomini di senno mi diranno, come ogni saggio che mi ascolta:
35 "Job speaks without intelligence, and his words are without sense."	35 "Giobbe non parla con conoscenza di causa, e le sue parole sono prive di senno.
36 Let Job be tried to the limit, since his answers are those of the impious;	36 Sia dunque Giobbe esaminato a fondo, per le sue risposte degne di un malvagio,
37 For he is adding rebellion to his sin by brushing off our arguments and addressing many words to God.	37 poiché ha aggiunto la ribellione al peccato, si burla di noi e moltiplica contro Dio le sue parole".
