NEW AMERICAN BIBLELXX
When Simon heard that Trypho was gathering a large army to invade and ravage the land of Judah,1 και ηκουσεν σιμων οτι συνηγαγεν τρυφων δυναμιν πολλην του ελθειν εις γην ιουδα και εκτριψαι αυτην
and saw that the people were in dread and terror, he went up to Jerusalem. There he assembled the people2 και ειδεν τον λαον οτι εντρομος εστιν και εκφοβος και ανεβη εις ιερουσαλημ και ηθροισεν τον λαον
and exhorted them in these words: "You know what I, my brothers, and my father's house have done for the laws and the sanctuary; what battles and disasters we have been through.3 και παρεκαλεσεν αυτους και ειπεν αυτοις αυτοι οιδατε οσα εγω και οι αδελφοι μου και ο οικος του πατρος μου εποιησαμεν περι των νομων και των αγιων και τους πολεμους και τας στενοχωριας ας ειδομεν
It was for the sake of these, for the sake of Israel, that all my brothers have perished, and I alone am left.4 τουτου χαριν απωλοντο οι αδελφοι μου παντες χαριν του ισραηλ και κατελειφθην εγω μονος
Far be it from me, then, to save my own life in any time of distress, for I am not better than my brothers.5 και νυν μη μοι γενοιτο φεισασθαι μου της ψυχης εν παντι καιρω θλιψεως ου γαρ ειμι κρεισσων των αδελφων μου
Rather will I avenge my nation and the sanctuary, as well as your wives and children, for all the nations out of hatred have united to destroy us."6 πλην εκδικησω περι του εθνους μου και περι των αγιων και περι των γυναικων και τεκνων υμων οτι συνηχθησαν παντα τα εθνη εκτριψαι ημας εχθρας χαριν
As the people heard these words, their spirit was rekindled.7 και ανεζωπυρησεν το πνευμα του λαου αμα του ακουσαι των λογων τουτων
They shouted in reply: "You are our leader in place of your brothers Judas and Jonathan.8 και απεκριθησαν φωνη μεγαλη λεγοντες συ ει ημων ηγουμενος αντι ιουδου και ιωναθου του αδελφου σου
Fight our battles, and we will do everything that you tell us."9 πολεμησον τον πολεμον ημων και παντα οσα αν ειπης ημιν ποιησομεν
So Simon mustered all the men able to fight, and quickly completing the walls of Jerusalem, fortified it on every side.10 και συνηγαγεν παντας τους ανδρας τους πολεμιστας και εταχυνεν του τελεσαι τα τειχη ιερουσαλημ και ωχυρωσεν αυτην κυκλοθεν
He sent Jonathan, son of Absalom, to Joppa with a large force; Jonathan drove out the occupants and remained there.11 και απεστειλεν ιωναθαν τον του αψαλωμου και μετ' αυτου δυναμιν ικανην εις ιοππην και εξεβαλεν τους οντας εν αυτη και εμεινεν εκει εν αυτη
Then Trypho moved from Ptolemais with a large army to invade the land of Judah, bringing Jonathan with him as a prisoner.12 και απηρεν τρυφων απο πτολεμαιδος μετα δυναμεως πολλης ελθειν εις γην ιουδα και ιωναθαν μετ' αυτου εν φυλακη
But Simon pitched his camp at Adida, facing the plain.13 σιμων δε παρενεβαλεν εν αδιδοις κατα προσωπον του πεδιου
When Trypho learned that Simon had succeeded his brother Jonathan, and that he intended to fight him, he sent envoys to him with this message:14 και επεγνω τρυφων οτι ανεστη σιμων αντι ιωναθου του αδελφου αυτου και οτι συναπτειν αυτω μελλει πολεμον και απεστειλεν προς αυτον πρεσβεις λεγων
"We have detained your brother Jonathan on account of the money that he owed the royal treasury in connection with the offices that he held.15 περι αργυριου ου ωφειλεν ιωναθαν ο αδελφος σου εις το βασιλικον δι' ας ειχεν χρειας συνεχομεν αυτον
Therefore, if you send us a hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons as hostages to guarantee that when he is set free he will not revolt against us, we will release him."16 και νυν αποστειλον αργυριου ταλαντα εκατον και δυο των υιων αυτου ομηρα οπως μη αφεθεις αποστατηση αφ' ημων και αφησομεν αυτον
Although Simon knew that they were speaking deceitfully to him, he gave orders to get the money and the boys, for fear of provoking much hostility among the people, who might say17 και εγνω σιμων οτι δολω λαλουσιν προς αυτον και πεμπει του λαβειν το αργυριον και τα παιδαρια μηποτε εχθραν αρη μεγαλην προς τον λαον
that Jonathan perished because Simon would not send Trypho the money and the boys.18 λεγοντες οτι ουκ απεστειλα αυτω το αργυριον και τα παιδαρια απωλετο
So he sent the boys and the hundred talents; but Trypho broke his promise and would not let Jonathan go.19 και απεστειλεν τα παιδαρια και τα εκατον ταλαντα και διεψευσατο και ουκ αφηκεν τον ιωναθαν
Next he began to invade and ravage the country. His troops went around by the road that leads to Adora, but Simon and his army moved along opposite him everywhere he went.20 και μετα ταυτα ηλθεν τρυφων του εμβατευσαι εις την χωραν και εκτριψαι αυτην και εκυκλωσαν οδον την εις αδωρα και σιμων και η παρεμβολη αυτου αντιπαρηγεν αυτω εις παντα τοπον ου αν επορευετο
The men in the citadel sent messengers to Trypho, urging him to come to them by way of the desert, and to send them provisions.21 οι δε εκ της ακρας απεστελλον προς τρυφωνα πρεσβευτας κατασπευδοντας αυτον του ελθειν προς αυτους δια της ερημου και αποστειλαι αυτοις τροφας
Although Trypho got all his cavalry ready to go, there was a heavy fall of snow that night, and he could not go.
When he was approaching Baskama, he had Jonathan killed and buried there.23 ως δε ηγγισεν της βασκαμα απεκτεινεν τον ιωναθαν και εταφη εκει
Then Trypho returned to his own country.24 και επεστρεψεν τρυφων και απηλθεν εις την γην αυτου
Simon sent for the remains of his brother Jonathan, and buried him in Modein, the city of his fathers.25 και απεστειλεν σιμων και ελαβεν τα οστα ιωναθου του αδελφου αυτου και εθαψεν αυτον εν μωδειν πολει των πατερων αυτου
All Israel bewailed him with solemn lamentation, mourning over him for many days.26 και εκοψαντο αυτον πας ισραηλ κοπετον μεγαν και επενθησαν αυτον ημερας πολλας
Then Simon erected over the tomb of his father and his brothers a monument of stones, polished front and back, and raised high enough to be seen at a distance.27 και ωκοδομησεν σιμων επι τον ταφον του πατρος αυτου και των αδελφων αυτου και υψωσεν αυτον τη ορασει λιθω ξεστω εκ των οπισθεν και εμπροσθεν
He set up seven pyramids facing one another for his father and his mother and his four brothers.28 και εστησεν επτα πυραμιδας μιαν κατεναντι της μιας τω πατρι και τη μητρι και τοις τεσσαρσιν αδελφοις
For the pyramids he devised a setting of big columns, on which he carved suits of armor as a perpetual memorial, and next to the armor he placed carved ships, which could be seen by all who sailed the sea.29 και ταυταις εποιησεν μηχανηματα περιθεις στυλους μεγαλους και εποιησεν επι τοις στυλοις πανοπλιας εις ονομα αιωνιον και παρα ταις πανοπλιαις πλοια εγγεγλυμμενα εις το θεωρεισθαι υπο παντων των πλεοντων την θαλασσαν
This tomb which he built at Modein is there to the present day.30 ουτος ο ταφος ον εποιησεν εν μωδειν εως της ημερας ταυτης
Trypho dealt treacherously with the young King Antiochus. He killed him31 ο δε τρυφων επορευετο δολω μετα αντιοχου του βασιλεως του νεωτερου και απεκτεινεν αυτον
and assumed the kingship in his place, putting on the crown of Asia. Thus he brought much evil on the land.32 και εβασιλευσεν αντ' αυτου και περιεθετο το διαδημα της ασιας και εποιησεν πληγην μεγαλην επι της γης
Simon, on his part, built up the strongholds of Judea, strengthening their fortifications with high towers, thick walls, and gates with bars, and he stored up provisions in the fortresses.33 και ωκοδομησεν σιμων τα οχυρωματα της ιουδαιας και περιετειχισεν πυργοις υψηλοις και τειχεσιν μεγαλοις και πυλαις και μοχλοις και εθετο βρωματα εν τοις οχυρωμασιν
Simon also sent chosen men to King Demetrius with the request that he grant the land a release from taxation, for all that Trypho did was to plunder the land.34 και επελεξεν σιμων ανδρας και απεστειλεν προς δημητριον τον βασιλεα του ποιησαι αφεσιν τη χωρα οτι πασαι αι πραξεις τρυφωνος ησαν αρπαγαι
In reply, King Demetrius sent him the following letter:35 και απεστειλεν αυτω δημητριος ο βασιλευς κατα τους λογους τουτους και απεκριθη αυτω και εγραψεν αυτω επιστολην τοιαυτην
"King Demetrius sends greetings to Simon the high priest, the friend of kings, and to the elders and the Jewish people.36 βασιλευς δημητριος σιμωνι αρχιερει και φιλω βασιλεων και πρεσβυτεροις και εθνει ιουδαιων χαιρειν
We have received the gold crown and the palm branch that you sent. We are willing to be on most peaceful terms with you and to write to our official to grant you release from tribute.37 τον στεφανον τον χρυσουν και την βαινην ην απεστειλατε κεκομισμεθα και ετοιμοι εσμεν του ποιειν υμιν ειρηνην μεγαλην και γραφειν τοις επι των χρειων του αφιεναι υμιν τα αφεματα
Whatever we have guaranteed to you remains in force, and the strongholds that you have built shall remain yours.38 και οσα εστησαμεν προς υμας εστηκεν και τα οχυρωματα α ωκοδομησατε υπαρχετω υμιν
We remit any oversights and defaults incurred up to now, as well as the crown tax that you owe. Any other tax that may have been collected in Jerusalem shall no longer be collected there.39 αφιεμεν δε αγνοηματα και τα αμαρτηματα εως της σημερον ημερας και τον στεφανον ον ωφειλετε και ει τι αλλο ετελωνειτο εν ιερουσαλημ μηκετι τελωνεισθω
If any of you are qualified for enrollment in our service, let them be enrolled. Let there be peace between us."40 και ει τινες επιτηδειοι υμων γραφηναι εις τους περι ημας εγγραφεσθωσαν και γινεσθω ανα μεσον ημων ειρηνη
Thus in the year one hundred and seventy, the yoke of the Gentiles was removed from Israel,41 ετους εβδομηκοστου και εκατοστου ηρθη ο ζυγος των εθνων απο του ισραηλ
and the people began to write in their records and contracts, "In the first year of Simon, high priest, governor, and leader of the Jews."42 και ηρξατο ο λαος γραφειν εν ταις συγγραφαις και συναλλαγμασιν ετους πρωτου επι σιμωνος αρχιερεως μεγαλου και στρατηγου και ηγουμενου ιουδαιων
In those days Simon besieged Gazara and surrounded it with troops. He made a siege machine, pushed it up against the city, and attacked and captured one of the towers.43 εν ταις ημεραις εκειναις παρενεβαλεν επι γαζαρα και εκυκλωσεν αυτην παρεμβολαις και εποιησεν ελεοπολιν και προσηγαγεν τη πολει και επαταξεν πυργον ενα και κατελαβετο
The men who had been on the siege machine jumped down into the city and caused a great tumult there.44 και εξηλλοντο οι εν τη ελεοπολει εις την πολιν και εγενετο κινημα μεγα εν τη πολει
The men of the city, joined by their wives and children, went up on the wall, with their garments rent, and cried out in loud voices, begging Simon to grant them peace.45 και ανεβησαν οι εν τη πολει συν γυναιξιν και τοις τεκνοις επι το τειχος διερρηχοτες τα ιματια αυτων και εβοησαν φωνη μεγαλη αξιουντες σιμωνα δεξιας αυτοις δουναι
"Do not treat us according to our evil deeds," they said, "but according to your mercy."46 και ειπαν μη ημιν χρηση κατα τας πονηριας ημων αλλα κατα το ελεος σου
So Simon came to terms with them and did not destroy them. He made them leave the city, however, and he purified the houses in which there were idols. Then he entered the city with hymns and songs of praise.47 και συνελυθη αυτοις σιμων και ουκ επολεμησεν αυτους και εξεβαλεν αυτους εκ της πολεως και εκαθαρισεν τας οικιας εν αις ην τα ειδωλα και ουτως εισηλθεν εις αυτην υμνων και ευλογων
After removing from it everything that was impure, he settled there men who observed the law. He improved its fortifications and built himself a residence.48 και εξεβαλεν εξ αυτης πασαν ακαθαρσιαν και κατωκισεν εν αυτη ανδρας οιτινες τον νομον ποιησωσιν και προσωχυρωσεν αυτην και ωκοδομησεν εαυτω εν αυτη οικησιν
The men in the citadel in Jerusalem were prevented from going out into the country and back for the purchase of food; they suffered greatly from hunger, and many of them died of starvation.49 οι δε εκ της ακρας εν ιερουσαλημ εκωλυοντο εκπορευεσθαι και εισπορευεσθαι εις την χωραν αγοραζειν και πωλειν και επεινασαν σφοδρα και απωλοντο εξ αυτων ικανοι τω λιμω
They finally cried out to Simon for peace, and he gave them peace. He expelled them from the citadel and cleansed it of impurities.50 και εβοησαν προς σιμωνα δεξιας λαβειν και εδωκεν αυτοις και εξεβαλεν αυτους εκειθεν και εκαθαρισεν την ακραν απο των μιασματων
On the twenty-third day of the second month, in the year one hundred and seventy-one, the Jews entered the citadel with shouts of jubilation, waving of palm branches, the music of harps and cymbals and lyres, and the singing of hymns and canticles, because a great enemy of Israel had been destroyed.51 και εισηλθον εις αυτην τη τριτη και εικαδι του δευτερου μηνος ετους πρωτου και εβδομηκοστου και εκατοστου μετα αινεσεως και βαιων και εν κινυραις και εν κυμβαλοις και εν ναβλαις και εν υμνοις και εν ωδαις οτι συνετριβη εχθρος μεγας εξ ισραηλ
Simon decreed that this day should be celebrated every year with rejoicing. He also strengthened the fortifications of the temple hill alongside the citadel, and he and his companions dwelt there.52 και εστησεν κατ' ενιαυτον του αγειν την ημεραν ταυτην μετα ευφροσυνης και προσωχυρωσεν το ορος του ιερου το παρα την ακραν και ωκει εκει αυτος και οι παρ' αυτου
Seeing that his son John was now a grown man, Simon made him commander of all his soldiers, with his residence in Gazara.53 και ειδεν σιμων τον ιωαννην υιον αυτου οτι ανηρ εστιν και εθετο αυτον ηγουμενον των δυναμεων πασων και ωκει εν γαζαροις
