KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.1 As he passed by he saw a man blind from birth.
And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.3 Jesus answered, "Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him.
I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.4 We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work.
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."
When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,6 When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes,
And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.7 and said to him, "Go wash in the Pool of Siloam" (which means Sent). So he went and washed, and came back able to see.
The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?8 His neighbors and those who had seen him earlier as a beggar said, "Isn't this the one who used to sit and beg?"
Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.9 Some said, "It is," but others said, "No, he just looks like him." He said, "I am."
Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?10 So they said to him, "(So) how were your eyes opened?"
He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.11 He replied, "The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' So I went there and washed and was able to see."
Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.12 And they said to him, "Where is he?" He said, "I don't know."
They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.13 They brought the one who was once blind to the Pharisees.
And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.14 Now Jesus had made clay and opened his eyes on a sabbath.
Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.15 So then the Pharisees also asked him how he was able to see. He said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see."
Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.16 So some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, because he does not keep the sabbath." (But) others said, "How can a sinful man do such signs?" And there was a division among them.
They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.17 So they said to the blind man again, "What do you have to say about him, since he opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet."
But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.18 Now the Jews did not believe that he had been blind and gained his sight until they summoned the parents of the one who had gained his sight.
And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?19 They asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How does he now see?"
His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:20 His parents answered and said, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.
But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.21 We do not know how he sees now, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him, he is of age; he can speak for him self."
These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone acknowledged him as the Messiah, he would be expelled from the synagogue.
Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.23 For this reason his parents said, "He is of age; question him."
Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.24 So a second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, "Give God the praise! We know that this man is a sinner."
He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.25 He replied, "If he is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know is that I was blind and now I see."
Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?26 So they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"
He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?27 He answered them, "I told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?"
Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.28 They ridiculed him and said, "You are that man's disciple; we are disciples of Moses!
We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this one is from."
The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.30 The man answered and said to them, "This is what is so amazing, that you do not know where he is from, yet he opened my eyes.
Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if one is devout and does his will, he listens to him.
Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.32 It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a person born blind.
If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.33 If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything."
They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.34 They answered and said to him, "You were born totally in sin, and are you trying to teach us?" Then they threw him out.
Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?35 When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"
He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?36 He answered and said, "Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?"
And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.37 Jesus said to him, "You have seen him and the one speaking with you is he."
And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.38 He said, "I do believe, Lord," and he worshiped him.
And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.39 Then Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind."
And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?40 Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, "Surely we are not also blind, are we?"
Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.41 Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying, 'We see,' so your sin remains.
