1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.	1 When he had said this, Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley to where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.
2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.	2 Judas his betrayer also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.	3 So Judas got a band of soldiers and guards from the chief priests and the Pharisees and went there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?	4 Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen to him, went out and said to them, "Whom are you looking for?"
5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.	5 They answered him, "Jesus the Nazorean." He said to them, "I AM." Judas his betrayer was also with them.
6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.	6 When he said to them, "I AM," they turned away and fell to the ground.
7 Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.	7 So he again asked them, "Whom are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus the Nazorean."
8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:	8 Jesus answered, "I told you that I AM. So if you are looking for me, let these men go."
9 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.	9 This was to fulfill what he had said, "I have not lost any of those you gave me."
10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.	10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear. The slave's name was Malchus.
11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?	11 Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into its scabbard. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father gave me?"
12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,	12 So the band of soldiers, the tribune, and the Jewish guards seized Jesus, bound him,
13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.	13 and brought him to Annas first. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.	14 It was Caiaphas who had counseled the Jews that it was better that one man should die rather than the people.
15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.	15 Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Now the other disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered the courtyard of the high priest with Jesus.
16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.	16 But Peter stood at the gate outside. So the other disciple, the acquaintance of the high priest, went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought Peter in.
17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.	17 Then the maid who was the gatekeeper said to Peter, "You are not one of this man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."
18 And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.	18 Now the slaves and the guards were standing around a charcoal fire that they had made, because it was cold, and were warming themselves. Peter was also standing there keeping warm.
19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.	19 The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.	20 Jesus answered him, "I have spoken publicly to the world. I have always taught in a synagogue or in the temple area where all the Jews gather, and in secret I have said nothing.
21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.	21 Why ask me? Ask those who heard me what I said to them. They know what I said."
22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?	22 When he had said this, one of the temple guards standing there struck Jesus and said, "Is this the way you answer the high priest?"
23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?	23 Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?"
24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.	24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.	25 Now Simon Peter was standing there keeping warm. And they said to him, "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it and said, "I am not."
26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?	26 One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?"
27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.	27 Again Peter denied it. And immediately the cock crowed.
28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.	28 Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was morning. And they themselves did not enter the praetorium, in order not to be defiled so that they could eat the Passover.
29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?	29 So Pilate came out to them and said, "What charge do you bring (against) this man?"
30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.	30 They answered and said to him, "If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you."
31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:	31 At this, Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law." The Jews answered him, "We do not have the right to execute anyone,"
32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.	32 in order that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled that he said indicating the kind of death he would die.
33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?	33 So Pilate went back into the praetorium and summoned Jesus and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"
34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?	34 Jesus answered, "Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?"
35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?	35 Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?"
36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.	36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants (would) be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here."
37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.	37 So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."
38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.	38 Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" When he had said this, he again went out to the Jews and said to them, "I find no guilt in him.
39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?	39 But you have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at Passover. Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"
40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.	40 They cried out again, "Not this one but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.
