Sirach 3

1 Hear me your father, O children, and do thereafter, that ye may be safe.	1 Figli, ascoltate me, vostro padre, e agite in modo da essere salvati.
2 For the Lord hath given the father honour over the children, and hath confirmed the authority of the mother over the sons.	2 Il Signore infatti ha glorificato il padre al di sopra dei figli e ha stabilito il diritto della madre sulla prole.
3 Whoso honoureth his father maketh an atonement for his sins:	3 Chi onora il padre espia i peccati,
4 And he that honoureth his mother is as one that layeth up treasure.	4 chi onora sua madre è come chi accumula tesori.
5 Whoso honoureth his father shall have joy of his own children; and when he maketh his prayer, he shall be heard.	5 Chi onora il padre avrà gioia dai propri figli e sarà esaudito nel giorno della sua preghiera.
6 He that honoureth his father shall have a long life; and he that is obedient unto the Lord shall be a comfort to his mother.	6 Chi glorifica il padre vivrà a lungo, chi obbedisce al Signore darà consolazione alla madre.
7 He that feareth the Lord will honour his father, and will do service unto his parents, as to his masters.	7 Chi teme il Signore, onora il padre e serve come padroni i suoi genitori.
8 Honour thy father and mother both in word and deed, that a blessing may come upon thee from them.	8 Con le azioni e con le parole onora tuo padre, perché scenda su di te la sua benedizione,
9 For the blessing of the father establisheth the houses of children; but the curse of the mother rooteth out foundations.	9 poiché la benedizione del padre consolida le case dei figli, la maledizione della madre ne scalza le fondamenta.
10 Glory not in the dishonour of thy father; for thy father's dishonour is no glory unto thee.	10 Non vantarti del disonore di tuo padre, perché il disonore del padre non è gloria per te;
11 For the glory of a man is from the honour of his father; and a mother in dishonour is a reproach to the children.	11 la gloria di un uomo dipende dall’onore di suo padre, vergogna per i figli è una madre nel disonore.
12 My son, help thy father in his age, and grieve him not as long as he liveth.	12 Figlio, soccorri tuo padre nella vecchiaia, non contristarlo durante la sua vita.
13 And if his understanding fail, have patience with him; and despise him not when thou art in thy full strength.	13 Sii indulgente, anche se perde il senno, e non disprezzarlo, mentre tu sei nel pieno vigore.
14 For the relieving of thy father shall not be forgotten: and instead of sins it shall be added to build thee up.	14 L’opera buona verso il padre non sarà dimenticata, otterrà il perdono dei peccati, rinnoverà la tua casa.
15 In the day of thine affliction it shall be remembered; thy sins also shall melt away, as the ice in the fair warm weather.	15 Nel giorno della tua tribolazione Dio si ricorderà di te, come brina al calore si scioglieranno i tuoi peccati.
16 He that forsaketh his father is as a blasphemer; and he that angereth his mother is cursed: of God.	16 Chi abbandona il padre è come un bestemmiatore, chi insulta sua madre è maledetto dal Signore.
17 My son, go on with thy business in meekness; so shalt thou be beloved of him that is approved.	17 Figlio, compi le tue opere con mitezza, e sarai amato più di un uomo generoso.
18 The greater thou art, the more humble thyself, and thou shalt find favour before the Lord.	18 Quanto più sei grande, tanto più fatti umile, e troverai grazia davanti al Signore.
19 Many are in high place, and of renown: but mysteries are revealed unto the meek.	19 Molti sono gli uomini orgogliosi e superbi, ma ai miti Dio rivela i suoi segreti.
20 For the power of the Lord is great, and he is honoured of the lowly.	20 Perché grande è la potenza del Signore, e dagli umili egli è glorificato.
21 Seek not out things that are too hard for thee, neither search the things that are above thy strength.	21 Non cercare cose troppo difficili per te e non scrutare cose troppo grandi per te.
22 But what is commanded thee, think thereupon with reverence, for it is not needful for thee to see with thine eyes the things that are in secret.	22 Le cose che ti sono comandate, queste considera: non hai bisogno di quelle nascoste.
23 Be not curious in unnecessary matters: for more things are shewed unto thee than men understand.	23 Non affaticarti in opere superflue, ti è stato mostrato infatti più di quanto possa comprendere la mente umana.
24 For many are deceived by their own vain opinion; and an evil suspicion hath overthrown their judgment.	24 La presunzione ha fatto smarrire molti e le cattive illusioni hanno fuorviato i loro pensieri.
25 Without eyes thou shalt want light: profess not the knowledge therefore that thou hast not.	25 Se non hai le pupille, tu manchi di luce; se ti manca la scienza, non dare consigli.
26 A stubborn heart shall fare evil at the last; and he that loveth danger shall perish therein.	26 Un cuore ostinato alla fine cadrà nel male, chi ama il pericolo in esso si perderà.
27 An obstinate heart shall be laden with sorrows; and the wicked man shall heap sin upon sin.	27 Un cuore ostinato sarà oppresso da affanni, il peccatore aggiungerà peccato a peccato.
28 In the punishment of the proud there is no remedy; for the plant of wickedness hath taken root in him.	28 Per la misera condizione del superbo non c’è rimedio, perché in lui è radicata la pianta del male.
29 The heart of the prudent will understand a parable; and an attentive ear is the desire of a wise man.	29 Il cuore sapiente medita le parabole, un orecchio attento è quanto desidera il saggio.
30 Water will quench a flaming fire; and alms maketh an atonement for sins.	30 L’acqua spegne il fuoco che divampa, l’elemosina espia i peccati.
31 And he that requiteth good turns is mindful of that which may come hereafter; and when he falleth, he shall find a stay.	31 Chi ricambia il bene provvede all’avvenire, al tempo della caduta troverà sostegno.
