Épître aux Romains 11

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Je demande donc: Dieu aurait-il rejeté son peuple? Certes non! Ne suis-je pas moi-mêmeIsraélite, de la race d'Abraham, de la tribu de Benjamin?	1 What I am saying is this: is it possible that God abandoned his people? Out of the question! I too aman Israelite, descended from Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
2 Dieu n'a pas rejeté le peuple que d'avance il a discerné. Ou bien ignorez-vous ce que dit l'Ecritureà propos d'Elie, quand il s'entretient avec Dieu pour accuser Israël:	2 God never abandoned his own people to whom, ages ago, he had given recognition. Do you notremember what scripture says about Elijah and how he made a complaint to God against Israel:
3 Seigneur, ils ont tué tes prophètes, rasé tes autels, et moi je suis resté seul et ils en veulent à mavie!	3 Lord, they have put your prophets to the sword, torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and now they want to kil me?
4 Eh bien, que lui répond l'oracle divin? Je me suis réservé 7.000 hommes qui n'ont pas fléchi legenou devant Baal.	4 And what was the prophetic answer given? I have spared for myself seven thousand men that havenot bent the knee to Baal.
5 Ainsi pareillement aujourd'hui il subsiste un reste, élu par grâce.	5 In the same way, then, in our own time, there is a remnant, set aside by grace.
6 Mais si c'est par grâce, ce n'est plus en raison des oeuvres; autrement la grâce n'est plus grâce.	6 And since it is by grace, it cannot now be by good actions, or grace would not be grace at al !
7 Que conclure? Ce que recherche Israël, il ne l'a pas atteint; mais ceux-là l'ont atteint qui ont étéélus. Les autres, ils ont été endurcis,	7 What fol ows? Israel failed to find what it was seeking; only those who were chosen found it and therest had their minds hardened;
8 selon le mot de l'Ecriture: Dieu leur a donné un esprit de torpeur: ils n'ont pas d'yeux pour voir,d'oreilles pour entendre jusqu'à ce jour.	8 just as it says in scripture: God has infused them with a spirit of lethargy; until today they have noteyes to see or ears to hear.
9 David dit aussi: Que leur table soit un piège, un lacet, une cause de chute, et leur serve de salaire!	9 David too says: May their own table prove a trap for them, a pitfal and a snare; let that be theirretribution.
10 Que leurs yeux s'enténèbrent pour ne point voir, et fais-leur sans arrêt courber le dos!	10 May their eyes grow so dim they cannot see, and their backs be bent for ever.
11 Je demande donc: serait-ce pour une vraie chute qu'ils ont bronché? Certes non! mais leur fauxpas a procuré le salut aux païens, afin que leur propre jalousie en fût excitée.	11 What I am saying is this: Was this stumbling to lead to their final downfall? Out of the question! Onthe contrary, their failure has brought salvation for the gentiles, in order to stir them to envy.
12 Et si leur faux pas a fait la richesse du monde et leur amoindrissement la richesse des païens,que ne fera pas leur totalité!	12 And if their fal has proved a great gain to the world, and their loss has proved a great gain to thegentiles -- how much greater a gain wil come when all is restored to them!
13 Or je vous le dis à vous, les païens, je suis bien l'apôtre des païens et j'honore mon ministère,	13 Let me say then to you gentiles that, as far as I am an apostle to the gentiles, I take pride in thiswork of service;
14 mais c'est avec l'espoir d'exciter la jalousie de ceux de mon sang et d'en sauver quelques-uns.	14 and I want it to be the means of rousing to envy the people who are my own blood-relations and soof saving some of them.
15 Car si leur mise à l'écart fut une réconciliation pour le monde, que sera leur admission, sinon unerésurrection d'entre les morts?	15 Since their rejection meant the reconciliation of the world, do you know what their re-acceptance willmean? Nothing less than life from the dead!
16 Or si les prémices sont saintes, toute la pâte aussi; et si la racine est sainte, les branches aussi.	16 When the first-fruits are made holy, so is the whole batch; and if the root is holy, so are thebranches.
17 Mais si quelques-unes des branches ont été coupées tandis que toi, sauvageon d'olivier tu as étégreffé parmi elles pour bénéficier avec elles de la sève de l'olivier,	17 Now suppose that some branches were broken off, and you are wild olive, grafted among the rest toshare with the others the rich sap of the olive tree;
18 ne va pas te glorifier aux dépens des branches. Ou si tu veux te glorifier, ce n'est pas toi quiportes la racine, c'est la racine qui te porte.	18 then it is not for you to consider yourself superior to the other branches; and if you start feelingproud, think: it is not you that sustain the root, but the root that sustains you.
19 Tu diras: On a coupé des branches, pour que, moi, je fusse greffé.	19 You wil say, 'Branches were broken off on purpose for me to be grafted in.' True;
20 Fort bien. Elles ont été coupées pour leur incrédulité, et c'est la foi qui te fait tenir. Net'enorgueillis pas; crains plutôt.	20 they through their unbelief were broken off, and you are established through your faith. So it is notpride that you should have, but fear:
21 Car si Dieu n'a pas épargné les branches naturelles, prends garde qu'il ne t'épargne pasdavantage.	21 if God did not spare the natural branches, he might not spare you either.
22 Considère donc la bonté et la sévérité de Dieu: sévérité envers ceux qui sont tombés, et enverstoi bonté, pourvu que tu demeures en cette bonté; autrement tu seras retranché toi aussi.	22 Remember God's severity as well as his goodness: his severity to those who fel , and his goodnessto you as long as you persevere in it; if not, you too will be cut off.
23 Et eux, s'ils ne demeurent pas dans l'incrédulité, ils seront greffés: Dieu est bien assez puissantpour les greffer à nouveau.	23 And they, if they do not persevere in their unbelief, wil be grafted in; for it is within the power of Godto graft them back again.
24 En effet, si toi tu as été retranché de l'olivier sauvage auquel tu appartenais par nature, et greffé,contre nature, sur un olivier franc, combien plus eux, les branches naturelles, seront-ils greffés sur leur propreolivier!	24 After al , if you, cut off from what was by nature a wild olive, could then be grafted unnaturally on to acultivated olive, how much easier wil it be for them, the branches that natural y belong there, to be grafted on tothe olive tree which is their own.
25 Car je ne veux pas, frères, vous laisser ignorer ce mystère, de peur que vous ne vous complaisiezen votre sagesse: une partie d'Israël s'est endurcie jusqu'à ce que soit entrée la totalité des païens,	25 I want you to be quite certain, brothers, of this mystery, to save you from congratulating yourselveson your own good sense: part of Israel had its mind hardened, but only until the gentiles have whol y come in;
26 et ainsi tout Israël sera sauvé, comme il est écrit: De Sion viendra le Libérateur, il ôtera lesimpiétés du milieu de Jacob.	26 and this is how all Israel will be saved. As scripture says: From Zion will come the Redeemer, he wilremove godlessness from Jacob.
27 Et voici quelle sera mon alliance avec eux lorsque j'enlèverai leurs péchés.	27 And this wil be my covenant with them, when I take their sins away.
28 Ennemis, il est vrai, selon l'Evangile, à cause de vous, ils sont, selon l'Election, chéris à cause deleurs pères.	28 As regards the gospel, they are enemies, but for your sake; but as regards those who are God'schoice, they are stil wel loved for the sake of their ancestors.
29 Car les dons et l'appel de Dieu sont sans repentance.	29 There is no change of mind on God's part about the gifts he has made or of his choice.
30 En effet, de même que jadis vous avez désobéi à Dieu et qu'au temps présent vous avez obtenumiséricorde grâce à leur désobéissance,	30 Just as you were in the past disobedient to God but now you have been shown mercy, through theirdisobedience;
31 eux de même au temps présent ont désobéi grâce à la miséricorde exercée envers vous, afinqu'eux aussi ils obtiennent au temps présent miséricorde.	31 so in the same way they are disobedient now, so that through the mercy shown to you they too wilreceive mercy.
32 Car Dieu a enfermé tous les hommes dans la désobéissance pour faire à tous miséricorde.	32 God has imprisoned al human beings in their own disobedience only to show mercy to them al .
33 O abîme de la richesse, de la sagesse et de la science de Dieu! Que ses décrets sont insondableset ses voies incompréhensibles!	33 How rich and deep are the wisdom and the knowledge of God! We cannot reach to the root of hisdecisions or his ways.
34 Qui en effet a jamais connu la pensée du Seigneur? Qui en fut jamais le conseiller?	34 Who has ever known the mind of the Lord? Who has ever been his adviser?
35 Ou bien qui l'a prévenu de ses dons pour devoir être payé de retour?	35 Who has given anything to him, so that his presents come only as a debt returned?
36 Car tout est de lui et par lui et pour lui. A lui soit la gloire éternellement! Amen.	36 Everything there is comes from him and is caused by him and exists for him. To him be glory forever! Amen.
