Prima lettera ai Corinzi - 1 Corinthians 14

1 Ακολουθειτε την αγαπην? και ζητειτε μετα ζηλου τα πνευματικα, μαλλον δε το να προφητευητε.1 Make love your aim; but be eager, too, for spiritual gifts, and especial y for prophesying.
2 Διοτι ο λαλων γλωσσαν αγνωριστον δεν λαλει προς ανθρωπους, αλλα προς τον Θεον? διοτι ουδεις ακουει αυτον, αλλα με το πνευμα αυτου λαλει μυστηρια?2 Those who speak in a tongue speak to God, but not to other people, because nobody understandsthem; they are speaking in the Spirit and the meaning is hidden.
3 ο δε προφητευων λαλει προς ανθρωπους εις οικοδομην και προτροπην και παρηγοριαν.3 On the other hand, someone who prophesies speaks to other people, building them up and givingthem encouragement and reassurance.
4 Ο λαλων γλωσσαν αγνωριστον εαυτον οικοδομει, ο δε προφητευων την εκκλησιαν οικοδομει.4 Those who speak in a tongue may build themselves up, but those who prophesy build up thecommunity.
5 Θελω δε παντες να λαλητε γλωσσας, μαλλον δε να προφητευητε? διοτι ο προφητευων ειναι μεγαλητερος παρα ο λαλων γλωσσας, εκτος εαν διερμηνευη, δια να λαβη οικοδομην η εκκλησια.5 While I should like you all to speak in tongues, I would much rather you could prophesy; since thosewho prophesy are of greater importance than those who speak in tongues, unless they can interpret what theysay so that the church is built up by it.
6 Και τωρα, αδελφοι, εαν ελθω προς εσας λαλων γλωσσας, τι θελω σας ωφελησει, εαν δεν σας λαλησω η με αποκαλυψιν η με γνωσιν η με προφητειαν η με διδαχην;6 Now suppose, brothers, I come to you and speak in tongues, what good shal I do you if my speakingprovides no revelation or knowledge or prophecy or instruction?
7 Και τα αψυχα, οσα διδουσι φωνην, ειτε αυλος ειτε κιθαρα, εαν δεν δωσωσι διακεκριμενους τους φθογγους, πως θελει γνωρισθη το αυλουμενον η το κιθαριζομενον;7 It is the same with an inanimate musical instrument. If it does not make any distinction between notes,how can one recognise what is being played on flute or lyre?
8 Διοτι εαν η σαλπιγξ δωση φωνην ασαφη, τις θελει ετοιμασθη εις πολεμον;8 If the trumpet sounds a cal which is unrecognisable, who is going to get ready for the attack?
9 Ουτω και σεις, εαν δεν δωσητε δια της γλωσσης φωνην ακαταληπτον, πως θελει γνωρισθη το λαλουμενον; διοτι θελετε λαλει εις τον αερα.9 It is the same with you: if you do not use your tongue to produce speech that can be readilyunderstood, how can anyone know what you are saying? You will be talking to the air.
10 Τοσα ειδη φωνων ειναι τυχον εν τω κοσμω, και ουδεν εξ αυτων ειναι ασημαντον.10 However many the languages used in the world, al of them use sound;
11 Εαν λοιπον δεν γνωρισω την σημασιαν της φωνης, θελω εισθαι προς τον λαλουντα βαρβαρος και ο λαλων βαρβαρος προς εμε.11 but if I do not understand the meaning of the sound, I am a barbarian to the person who is speaking,and the speaker is a barbarian to me.
12 Ουτω και σεις, επειδη εισθε ζηλωται πνευματικων, ζητειτε να περισσευητε εν αυτοις προς την οικοδομην της εκκλησιας.12 So with you, as you are eager to have spiritual powers, aim to be rich in those which build up thecommunity.
13 Δια τουτο ο λαλων γλωσσαν αγνωριστον ας προσευχηται δια να γεινη ικανος να διερμηνευη,13 That is why anybody who speaks in a tongue must pray that he may be given the interpretation.
14 διοτι εαν προσευχωμαι με γλωσσαν αγνωριστον, το πνευμα μου προσευχεται, αλλ' ο νους μου ειναι ακαρποφορητος.14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit may be praying but my mind derives no fruit from it.
15 Τι πρεπει λοιπον; Θελω προσευχηθη με το πνευμα, θελω δε προσευχηθη και με τον νουν. Θελω ψαλλει με το πνευμα, θελω δε ψαλλει και με τον νουν.15 What then? I shal pray with the spirit, but I shall pray with the mind as wel : I shall sing praises withthe spirit and I shal sing praises with the mind as well.
16 Διοτι εαν δοξολογησης με το πνευμα, εκεινος οστις εχει ταξιν ιδιωτου πως θελει ειπει το αμην εις την ευχαριστιαν σου, μη εξευρων τι λεγεις;16 Otherwise, if you say your blessing only with the spirit, how is the uninitiated person going to answer'Amen' to your thanksgiving, without understanding what you are saying?
17 Διοτι συ μεν καλως ευχαριστεις, ο αλλος ομως δεν οικοδομειται.17 You may be making your thanksgiving wel , but the other person is not built up at al .
18 Ευχαριστω εις τον Θεον μου οτι λαλω πλειοτερας γλωσσας παρα παντας υμας?18 I thank God that I speak with tongues more than any of you;
19 πλην εν τη εκκλησια πεντε λογους προτιμω να λαλησω δια του νοος μου, δια να κατηχησω και αλλους, παρα μυριους λογους με γλωσσαν αγνωριστον.19 al the same, when I am in the assembly I would rather say five words with my mind, to instructothers as wel , than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20 Αδελφοι, μη γινεσθε παιδια κατα τας φρενας, αλλα γινεσθε νηπια μεν εις την κακιαν, τελειοι ομως εις τας φρενας.20 Brothers, do not remain children in your thinking; infants in wickedness-agreed, but in your thinkinggrown-ups.
21 Εν τω νομω ειναι γεγραμμενον οτι δι' ετερογλωσσων και δια ξενων χειλεων θελω λαλησει προς τον λαον τουτον, και ουδε ουτω θελουσι με εισακουσει, λεγει Κυριος.21 It says in the written Law: In strange tongues and in a foreign language I wil talk to this nation, andeven so they will refuse to listen, says the Lord.
22 Ωστε αι γλωσσαι ειναι δια σημειον ουχι προς τους πιστευοντας, αλλα προς τους απιστους? η προφητεια ομως ειναι ουχι προς τους απιστους, αλλα προς τους πιστευοντας.22 So then, strange languages are significant not for believers, but for unbelievers; whereas on theother hand, prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for believers.
23 Εαν λοιπον συνελθη η εκκλησια ολη επι το αυτο και λαλωσι παντες γλωσσας αγνωριστους, εισελθωσι δε ιδιωται η απιστοι, δεν θελουσιν ειπει οτι εισθε μαινομενοι;23 Suppose that, if the whole congregation were meeting and al of them speaking in tongues, andsome uninitiated people or unbelievers were to come in, don't you think they would say that you were all raving?
24 Αλλ' εαν παντες προφητευωσιν, εισελθη δε τις απιστος η ιδιωτης, ελεγχεται υπο παντων, ανακρινεται υπο παντων,24 But if you were al prophesying when an unbeliever or someone uninitiated came in, he would findhimself put to the test by al and judged by al
25 και ουτω τα κρυπτα της καρδιας αυτου γινονται φανερα? και ουτω πεσων κατα προσωπον θελει προσκυνησει τον Θεον, κηρυττων οτι ο Θεος ειναι τωοντι εν μεσω υμων.25 and the secrets of his heart revealed; and so he would fal down on his face and worship God,declaring that God is indeed among you.
26 Τι πρεπει λοιπον, αδελφοι; Οταν συνερχησθε, εκαστος υμων ψαλμον εχει, διδαχην εχει, γλωσσαν εχει, αποκαλυψιν εχει, ερμηνειαν εχει? παντα ας γινωνται προς οικοδομην.26 Then what should it be like, brothers? When you come together each of you brings a psalm or someinstruction or a revelation, or speaks in a tongue or gives an interpretation. Let al these things be done in a waythat wil build up the community.
27 Εαν τις λαλη γλωσσαν αγνωριστον, ας καμωσι τουτο ανα δυο η το περισσοτερον ανα τρεις και εκ διαδοχης, και εις ας διερμηνευη?27 If there are to be any people speaking in a tongue, then let there be only two, or at the most three,and those one at a time, and let one of these interpret.
28 αλλ' εαν δεν ηναι διερμηνευτης, ας σιωπα εν τη εκκλησια, ας λαλη δε προς εαυτον και προς τον Θεον.28 If there is no interpreter, then let each of them be quiet in the assembly, and speak only to himselfand God.
29 Προφηται δε ας λαλωσι δυο η τρεις, και οι αλλοι ας διακρινωσιν?29 Let two prophets, or three, speak while the rest weigh their words;
30 εαν δε ελθη αποκαλυψις εις αλλον καθημενον, ο πρωτος ας σιωπα.30 and if a revelation comes to someone else who is sitting by, the speaker should stop speaking.
31 Διοτι δυνασθε ο εις μετα τον αλλον να προφητευητε παντες, δια να μανθανωσι παντες και παντες να παρηγορωνται?31 You can al prophesy, but one at a time, then al wil learn something and al receive encouragement.
32 και τα πνευματα των προφητων υποτασσονται εις τους προφητας?32 The prophetic spirit is to be under the prophets' control,
33 διοτι ο Θεος δεν ειναι ακαταστασιας, αλλ' ειρηνης. Καθως εν πασαις ταις εκκλησιαις των αγιων.33 for God is a God not of disorder but of peace. As in al the churches of God's holy people,
34 Αι γυναικες σας ας σιωπωσιν εν ταις εκκλησιαις? διοτι δεν ειναι συγκεχωρημενον εις αυτας να λαλωσιν, αλλα να υποτασσωνται, καθως και ο νομος λεγει.34 women are to remain quiet in the assemblies, since they have no permission to speak: theirs is asubordinate part, as the Law itself says.
35 Αλλ' εαν θελωσι να μαθωσι τι, ας ερωτωσιν εν τω οικω τους ανδρας αυτων? διοτι αισχρον ειναι εις γυναικας να λαλωσιν εν εκκλησια.35 If there is anything they want to know, they should ask their husbands at home: it is shameful for awoman to speak in the assembly.
36 Μηπως απο σας εξηλθεν ο λογος του Θεου, η εις σας μονους κατηντησεν;36 Do you real y think that you are the source of the word of God? Or that you are the only people towhom it has come?
37 Εαν τις νομιζη οτι ειναι προφητης η πνευματικος, ας μαθη εκεινα τα οποια γραφω προς εσας, οτι ειναι εντολαι του Κυριου.37 Anyone who claims to be a prophet, or to have any spiritual powers must recognise that what I amwriting to you is a commandment from the Lord.
38 αλλ' εαν τις αγνοη, ας αγνοη.38 If anyone does not recognise this, it is because that person is not recognised himself.
39 Ωστε, αδελφοι, ζητειτε μετα ζηλου το προφητευειν, και το λαλειν γλωσσας μη εμποδιζετε?39 So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not suppress the gift of speaking in tongues.
40 παντα ας γινωνται ευσχημονως και κατα ταξιν.40 But make sure that everything is done in a proper and orderly fashion.
