οι δε πορευομενοι την οδον ηλθον εσπερας επι τον τιγριν ποταμον και ηυλιζοντο εκει1 And Tobias went forward, and the dog followed him, and he lodged the first night by the river of Tigris.
το δε παιδαριον κατεβη περικλυσασθαι και ανεπηδησεν ιχθυς απο του ποταμου και εβουληθη καταπιειν το παιδαριον2 And he went out to wash his feet, and behold a monstrous fish came up to devour him.
ο δε αγγελος ειπεν αυτω επιλαβου του ιχθυος και εκρατησεν τον ιχθυν το παιδαριον και ανεβαλεν αυτον επι την γην3 And Tobias being afraid of him, cried out with a loud voice, saying: Sir, he cometh upon me.
και ειπεν αυτω ο αγγελος ανατεμε τον ιχθυν και λαβων την καρδιαν και το ηπαρ και την χολην θες ασφαλως4 And the angel said to him: Take him by the gill, and draw him to thee. And when he had done so, he drew him out upon the land, and he began to pant before his feet.
και εποιησεν το παιδαριον ως ειπεν αυτω ο αγγελος τον δε ιχθυν οπτησαντες εφαγον5 Then the angel said to him: Take out the entrails of the fish, and lay up his heart, and his gall, and his liver for thee: for these are necessary for useful medicines.
και ωδευον αμφοτεροι εως ηγγισαν εν εκβατανοις6 And when he had done so, he roasted the flesh thereof, and they took it with them in the way: the rest they salted as much as might serve them, till they came to Rages the city of the Medes.
και ειπεν το παιδαριον τω αγγελω αζαρια αδελφε τι εστιν το ηπαρ και η καρδια και η χολη του ιχθυος7 Then Tobias asked the angel, and said to him: I beseech thee, brother Azarias, tell me what remedies are these things good for, which thou hast bid me keep of the fish?
και ειπεν αυτω η καρδια και το ηπαρ εαν τινα οχλη δαιμονιον η πνευμα πονηρον ταυτα δει καπνισαι ενωπιον ανθρωπου η γυναικος και ουκετι ου μη οχληθη8 And the angel, answering, said to him: If thou put a little piece of its heart upon coals, the smoke thereof driveth away all kind of devils, either from man or from woman, so that they come no more to them.
η δε χολη εγχρισαι ανθρωπον ος εχει λευκωματα εν τοις οφθαλμοις και ιαθησεται9 And the gall is good for anointing the eyes, in which there is a white speck, and they shall be cured.
ως δε προσηγγισαν τη ραγη10 And Tobias said to him: Where wilt thou that we lodge?
ειπεν ο αγγελος τω παιδαριω αδελφε σημερον αυλισθησομεθα παρα ραγουηλ και αυτος συγγενης σου εστιν και εστιν αυτω θυγατηρ μονογενης ονοματι σαρρα11 And the angel answering, said: Here is one whose name is Raguel, a near kinsman of thy tribe, and he hath a daughter named Sara, but he hath no son nor any other daughter beside her.
λαλησω περι αυτης του δοθηναι σοι αυτην εις γυναικα οτι σοι επιβαλλει η κληρονομια αυτης και συ μονος ει εκ του γενους αυτης και το κορασιον καλον και φρονιμον εστιν12 All his substance is due to thee, and thou must take her to wife.
και νυν ακουσον μου και λαλησω τω πατρι αυτης και οταν υποστρεψωμεν εκ ραγων ποιησομεν τον γαμον διοτι επισταμαι ραγουηλ οτι ου μη δω αυτην ανδρι ετερω κατα τον νομον μωυση η οφειλεσει θανατον οτι την κληρονομιαν σοι καθηκει λαβειν η παντα ανθρωπον13 Ask her therefore of her father, and he will give her thee to wife.
τοτε ειπεν το παιδαριον τω αγγελω αζαρια αδελφε ακηκοα εγω το κορασιον δεδοσθαι επτα ανδρασιν και παντας εν τω νυμφωνι απολωλοτας14 Then Tobias answered, and said: I hear that she hath been given to seven husbands, and they all died: moreover I have heard, that a devil killed them.
και νυν εγω μονος ειμι τω πατρι και φοβουμαι μη εισελθων αποθανω καθως και οι προτεροι οτι δαιμονιον φιλει αυτην ο ουκ αδικει ουδενα πλην των προσαγοντων αυτη και νυν εγω φοβουμαι μη αποθανω και καταξω την ζωην του πατρος μου και της μητρος μου μετ' οδυνης επ' εμοι εις τον ταφον αυτων και υιος ετερος ουχ υπαρχει αυτοις ος θαψει αυτους15 Now I am afraid, lest the same thing should happen to me also: and whereas I am the only child of my parents, I should bring down their old age with sorrow to hell.
ειπεν δε αυτω ο αγγελος ου μεμνησαι των λογων ων ενετειλατο σοι ο πατηρ σου υπερ του λαβειν σε γυναικα εκ του γενους σου και νυν ακουσον μου αδελφε διοτι σοι εσται εις γυναικα και του δαιμονιου μηδενα λογον εχε οτι την νυκτα ταυτην δοθησεται σοι αυτη εις γυναικα16 Then the angel Raphael said to him: Hear me, and I will shew thee who they are, over whom the devil can prevail.
και εαν εισελθης εις τον νυμφωνα λημψη τεφραν θυμιαματων και επιθησεις απο της καρδιας και του ηπατος του ιχθυος και καπνισεις και οσφρανθησεται το δαιμονιον και φευξεται και ουκ επανελευσεται τον αιωνα του αιωνος17 For they who in such manner receive matrimony, as to shut out God from themselves, and from their mind, and to give themselves to their lust, as the horse and mule, which have not understanding, over them the devil hath power.
οταν δε προσπορευη αυτη εγερθητε αμφοτεροι και βοησατε προς τον ελεημονα θεον και σωσει υμας και ελεησει μη φοβου οτι σοι αυτη ητοιμασμενη ην απο του αιωνος και συ αυτην σωσεις και πορευσεται μετα σου και υπολαμβανω οτι σοι εσται εξ αυτης παιδια18 But thou when thou shalt take her, go into the chamber, and for three days keep thyself continent from her, and give thyself to nothing else but to prayers with her.
και ως ηκουσεν τωβιας ταυτα εφιλησεν αυτην και η ψυχη αυτου εκολληθη αυτη σφοδρα19 And on that night lay the liver of the fish on the fire, and the devil shall be driven away.
But the second night thou shalt be admitted into the society of the holy Patriarchs.
And the third night thou shalt obtain a blessing that sound children may be born of you.
And when the third night is past, thou shalt take the virgin with the fear of the Lord, moved rather for love of children than for lust, that in the seed of Abraham thou mayst obtain a blessing in children.
