1 And Abimelech the son of Jerobaal went to Sichem to his mother's brethren and spoke to them, and to all the kindred of his mother's father, saying:	1 Abimelec figlio di Ierobaal se ne andò a Sichem dai fratelli di sua madre, e parlò con essi e con tutti i parenti della casa del padre di sua madre, dicendo:
2 Speak to all the men of Sichem: whether is better for you that seventy men all the sons of Jerobaal should rule over you, or that one man should rule over you? And withal consider that I am your bone, and your flesh.	2 « Dite a tutti gli uomini di Sichem: Che è meglio per voi, che vi comandi uno solo o settanta uomini, tutti i figli di Ierobaal? Considerate inoltre che io sono vostro osso e vostra carne ».
3 And his mother's brethren spoke of him to all the men of Sichem, all these words, and they inclined their hearts after Abimelech, saying: He is our brother:	3 I fratelli di sua madre parlarono di lui a tutti gli uomini di Sichem, e col riferire tutte queste parole, e col dire: « Egli è nostro fratello » inclinarono il loro cuore a seguire Abimelec,
4 And they gave him seventy weight of silver out of the temple of Baalberith: wherewith he hired to himself men that were needy, and vagabonds, and they followed him.	4 a cui furon dati settanta sicli d'argento tolti dal tempio di Baalberit. 5 And he came to his father's house in Ephra, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerobaal, seventy men, upon one stone: and there remained only Joatham the youngest son of Jerobaal, who was hidden.	5 e, andato nella casa di suo padre in Efra, uccise sopra una sola pietra i suoi fratelli, figli di Ierobaal, settanta uomini; ma Ioatam, il figlio minore di Ierobaal, scampò e si nascose,
6 And all the men of Sichem were gathered together, and all the families of the city of Mello: and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak that stood in Sichem.	6 Allora tutti gli uomini di Sichem, e tutte le famiglie della città di Mello, adunatisi, andarono a costituire re Abimelec presso la quercia che era in Sichem.
7 This being told to Joatham, he went and stood on the top of mount Garizim: and lifting up his voice, he cried, and said: Hear me, ye men of Sichem, so may God hear you.	7 Informato della cosa, Ioatam andò a porsi sulla cima del monte Garizim, e alzata la voce, gridò e disse: « Ascoltatemi, uomini di Sichem e così Dio vi ascolti! 8 The trees went to anoint a king over them: and they said to the olive tree: Reign thou over us.	8 Gli alberi andarono per ungersi un re. E dissero all'ulivo: Regna su noi.
9 And it answered: Can I leave my fatness, which both gods and men make use of, to come to be promoted among the trees?	9 Ma l'ulivo rispose: Potrei io cessar di produrre il mio olio, di cui si servon gli dèi e gli uomini, per venire a tremolare sopra gli alberi?
10 And the trees said to the fig tree: Come thou and reign over us.	10 E gli alberi dissero al fico: Vieni tu a regnare su noi.
11 And it answered them: Can I leave my sweetness, and my delicious fruits, and go to be promoted among the other trees?	11 Ma il fico rispose: Potrei io rinunziare alla mia dolcezza e ai miei soavissimi frutti, per venire a tremolare sopra gli alberi?
12 And the trees said to the vine: Come thou and reign over us.	12 E gli alberi dissero alla vite: Vieni tu a regnare su noi.
13 And it answered them: Can I forsake my wine, that cheereth God and men, and be promoted among the other trees?	13 Ma la vite disse loro: Potrei io rinunziare al mio vino che rallegra gli dèi e gli uomini, per venire a tremolare sopra gli alberi?
14 And all the trees said to the bramble: Come thou and reign over us.	14 Allora tutti gli alberi dissero allo spino: Vieni tu a regnare su noi.
15 And it answered them: If indeed you mean to make me king, come ye and rest under my shadow: but if you mean it not, let fire come out from the bramble, and devour the cedars of Libanus.	15 E lo spino rispose loro: Se mi eleggete davvero a vostro re, venite a riposarvi sotto la mia ombra; ma se non volete farlo, dallo spino esca un fuoco e divori i cedri del Libano.
16 Now therefore if you have done well, and without sin in appointing Abimelech king over you, and have dealt well with Jerobaal, and with his house, and have made a suitable return for the benefits of him, who fought for you,	16 Or se con giustizia e senza colpa avete eletto Abimelec a vostro re, se avete operato bene con Ierobaal e la sua casa, se avete ricompensati i benefizi di colui che combattè per voi
17 And exposed his life to dangers, to deliver you from the hands of Madian,	17 ed espose al pericolo la sua vita per liberarvi dalle mani di Madian;
18 And you are now risen up against my father's house, and have killed his sons seventy men upon one stone, and have made Abimelech the son of his handmaid king over the inhabitants of Sichem, because he is your brother:	18 se voi (che oggi siete insorti contro la casa di mio padre, e ne avete uccisi i figli, settanta uomini, sopra una pietra, e avete eletto Abimelec, figlio d'una sua schiava, a re della gente di Sichem, perchè è vostro fratello),
19 If therefore you have dealt well, and without fault with Jerobaal, and his house, rejoice ye this day in Abimelech, and may he rejoice in you.	19 avete agito con giustizia e senza colpa verso Ierobaal e verso la sua casa, godetevi Abimelec, ed egli vi goda.
20 But if unjustly: let fire come out from him, and consume the inhabitants of Sichem, and the town of Mello: and let fire come out from the men of Sichem, and from the town of Mello, and devour Abimelech.	20 Ma se avete agito perversamente, esca da lui un fuoco, divori gli abitanti di Sichem e la città di Mello; ed un fuoco esca dagli abitanti di Sichem e dalla città di Mello a divorare Abimelec ».
21 And when he had said thus he fled, and went into Bera: and dwelt there for fear of Abimelech his brother.	21 Dette queste cose fuggì e andò a Bera, ove abitò per timore di Abimelec suo fratello.
22 So Abimelech reigned over Israel for three years.	22 Abimelec regnò sopra Israele per tre anni.
23 And the Lord sent a very evil spirit between Abimelech and the inhabitants of Sichem: who began to detest him,	23 Il Signore poi mandò uno spirito pessimo tra Abimelec e gli abitanti di Sichem. I Sichemiti cominciaroro a detestare Abimelec loro fratello,
24 And to leave the crime of the murder of the seventy sons of Jerobaal, and the shedding of their blood upon Abimelech their brother, and upon the rest of the princes of the Sichemites, who aided him.	24 e a gettare sopra di lui e sopra tutti gli altri principi di Sichem che l'avevano aiutato, la sceleraggine dell'uccisione dei settanta figli di Ierobaal e lo spargimento del loro sangue.
25 And they set an ambush against him on the top of the mountains: and while they waited for his coming, they committed robberies, taking spoils of all that passed by: and it was told Abimelech.	25 Gli tesero insidie sulla cima dei monti, e mentre ne aspettavano il ritorno, assassinavano e derubavano i passeggeri; e la cosa fu riferita ad Abimelec.
26 And Gaal the son of Obed came with his brethren, and went over to Sichem. And the inhabitants of Sichem taking courage at his coming,	26 Intanto Gaal, figlio di Obed, venne coi suoi fratelli a passare in Sichem. Rassicurati dalla sua venuta, i Sichemiti
27 Went out into the fields, wasting the vineyards, and treading down the grapes: and singing and dancing they went into the temple of their god, and in their banquets and cups they cursed Abimelech.	27 uscirono alla campagna a devastar le vigne e calpestar le uve, poi, fatti dei cori di cantori, entrarono nel tempio del loro dio, e, mangiando e bevendo, maledicevano Abimelec.
28 And Gaal the son of Obed cried: Who is Abimelech, and what is Sichem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerobaal, and hath made Zebul his servant ruler over the men of Emor the father of Sichem? Why then shall we serve him?	28 E Gaal figlio di Obed gridava: « Chi è Abimelec e che è Sichem da servire a lui? Non è egli il figlio di Ierobaal? Non ha costituito il suo servo Zebul come principe sopra gli uomini di Emor padre di Sichem? Perchè dunque dovremo servirgli?
29 Would to God that some man would put this people under my hand, that I might remove Abimelech out of the way. And it was said to Abimelech: Gather together the multitude of an army, and come.	29 Oh! se qualcuno mi desse il governo di questo popolo, io leverei di mezzo Abimelec ». E fu detto ad Abimelec: « Raduna un esercito numeroso e vieni ».
30 For Zebul the ruler of the city, hearing the words of Gaal, the son of Obed, was very angry,	30 Zebul principe della città, uditi che ebbe i discorsi di Gaal figlio di Obed, si adirò fortemente,
31 And sent messengers privately to Abimelech, saying: Behold Gaal the son of Obed is come into Sichem with his brethren, and endeavoureth to set the city against thee.	31 e di nascosto mandò messi che dicessero ad Abimelec: « Guarda che Gaal figlio di Obed è venuto in Sichem coi suoi fratelli, e solleva la città contro di te.
32 Arise therefore in the night with the people that is with thee and he hid in the field:	32 Levati adunque di notte colla gente che hai teco, e sta in agguato nella campagna;
33 And betimes in the morning at sun rising set upon the city. And when he shall come out against thee with his people, do to him what thou shalt be able.	33 poi di gran mattino sul levar del sole, piomba sulla città, e quando egli colla sua gente uscirà contro di te, fagli quel che potrai ».
34 Abimelech therefore arose with all his army by night, and laid ambushes near Sichem in four places.	34 E Abimelec messosi in cammino di notte con tutto il suo esercito, pose insidie in quattro luoghi vicino a Sichem.
35 And Gaal the son of Obed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city. And Abimelech rose up, and all his army with him from the places of the ambushes.	35 Or Gaal figlio di Obed, uscito fuori si fermò all'entrata della porta della città; allora Abimelec, con tutto il suo esercito uscì dagli agguati.
36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul: Behold a multitude cometh down from the mountains. And he answered him: Thou seest the shadows of the mountains as if they were the heads of men, and this is thy mistake.	36 Veduta quella gente, Gaal disse a Zebul: « Ecco una moltitudine che scende dai monti ». E Zebul gli rispose: « Tu prendi le ombre dei monti per teste d'uomini e sei ingannato da tale illusione ».
37 Again Gaal said: Behold there cometh people down from the middle of the land, and one troop cometh by the way that looketh towards the oak.	37 « Ecco, ripigliò Gaal, una furba discende dalle più alte cime e una schiera vien per la strada che guarda la querce ».
38 And Zebul said to him: Where is now thy mouth wherewith thou saidst? Who is Abimelech that we should serve him? Is not this the people which thou didst despise? Go out, and fight against him.	38 E Zebul gli disse: « Dov'è or la tua bocca colla quale dicevi: Chi è Abimelec per essere servito? Non è forse questo il popolo che tu disprezzavi? Esci fuori e combatti contro di lui».
39 So Gaal went out in the sight of the people of Sichem, and fought against Abimelech,	39 Allora Gaal uscì, e, davanti al popolo di Sichem, combattè contro Abimelec,
40 Who chased and put him to flight, and drove him to the city: and many were slain of his people, even to the gate of the city:	40 Il quale, inseguendolo mentre fuggiva, lo spinse nella città e uccise molti dei suoi fin sotto la porta della città;
41 And Abimelech sat down in Ruma: but Zebul drove Gaal, and his companions out of the city, and would not suffer them to abide in it.	41 ma poi si fermò in Ruma; mentre Zebul cacciava Gaal e i suoi compagni dalla città, senza permettere che vi dimorassero.
42 So the day following the people went out into the field. And it was told Abimelech.	42 Il giorno dopo il popolo uscì alla campagna. Saputa la cosa, Abimelec,
43 And he took his army, and divided it into three companies, and laid ambushes in the fields. And seeing that the people came out of the city, he arose and set upon them,	43 preso l'esercito e divisolo in tre schiere, tese insidie nei campi. Appena vide che il popolo era uscito dalla città, si mosse, si scagliò contro di essi
44 With his own company, assaulting and besieging the city: whilst the two other companies chased the enemies that were scattered about the field.	44 colla sua schiera, e poi assalì ed assediò la città, mentre le altre due schiere inseguivano gli avversari dispersi per la campagna.
45 And Abimelech assaulted the city all that day: and took it, and killed the inhabitants thereof, and demolished it, so that he sowed salt in it.	45 Abimelec, avendo combattuto contro la città per tutto quel giorno, la prese, ne uccise gli abitanti e la distrusse in guisa che fece seminare il sale.
46 And when they who dwelt in the tower of Sichem had heard this, they went into the temple of their god Berith where they had made a covenant with him, and from thence the place had taken its name, and it was exceeding strong.	46 A tal notizia quelli che abitavano nella torre di Sichem si ritirarono nel tempio del loro dio Berit, dove avevan fatto con lui alleanza, dalla quale aveva preso il nome quel luogo molto fortificato.
47 Abimelech also hearing that the men of the tower of Sichem were gathered together,	47 Abimelec, saputo che gli uomini della torre di Sichem si eran riuniti insieme,
48 Went up into mount Selmon he and all his people with him: and taking an axe, he cut down the bough of a tree, and laying it on his shoulder and carrying it, he said to his companions: What you see me do, do you out of hand.	48 salì con tutta la sua gente sul monte Selmon, e, presa, una scure, tagliò un ramo di albero, poi, portandolo sulle spalle, disse ai compagni: « Fate subito quel che mi vedete fare ».
49 So they cut down boughs from the trees, every man as fast as he could, and followed their leader. And surrounding the fort they set it on fire: and so it came to pass that with the smoke and with the fire a thousand persons were killed, men and women together, of the inhabitants of the tower of Sichem.	49 ed essi, tagliati a gara i rami degli alberi, seguirono il capitano, e, circondata la fortezza, vi appiccarono il fuoco. Così avvenne che tra il fumo e le fiamme perirono mille persone, uomini e donne, che abitavano nella torre di Sichem.
50 Then Abimelech departing from thence came to the town of Thebes, which he surrounded and besieged with his army.	50 Partito di lì, Abimelec andò alla città di Tebes, e, circondatala, l'assediò col suo esercito.
51 And there was in the midst of the city a high tower, to which both the men and the women were fled together, and all the princes of the city, and having shut and strongly barred the gate, they stood upon the battlements of the tower to defend themselves.	51 Or gli uomini, le donne e tutti i principali della città si eran rifugiati insieme in una torre elevata che era nel mezzo della città, e, chiusa fortemente la porta, stavano sul tetto della torre a difendersi.
52 And Abimelech coming near the tower, fought stoutly: and approaching to the gate, endeavoured to set fire to it:	52 Abimelec, avanzatosi sotto la torre, combatteva valorosamente, e accostatosi alla porta tentava di appiccarvi il fuoco,
53 And behold a certain woman casting a piece of a millstone from above, dashed it against the head of Abimelech, and broke his skull.	53 quand'ecco una donna gettare di sopra un pezzo di macina che lo colpì nella testa e gli fracassò il cervello.
54 And he called hastily to his armourbearer, and said to him: Draw thy sword, and kill me: lest it should be said that I was slain by a woman. He did as he was commanded, and slew him.	54 Egli, chiamato subito il suo scudiere, gli disse: « Tira fuori la spada e uccidimi; chè non s'abbia a dire che sono stato ucciso da una donna ». L'altro ubbidì e l'uccise.
55 And when he was dead, all the men of Israel that were with him, returned to their homes.	55 Morto Abimelec, tutti gli uomini d'Israele che eran con lui se ne tornarono a casa.
56 And God repaid the evil, that Abimelech had done against his father, killing his seventy brethren.	56 Dìo rese ad Abimelec il male che egli aveva fatto contro suo padre, uccidendo i suoi settanta fratelli.
57 The Sichemites also were rewarded for what they had done, and the curse of Joatham the son of Jerobaal came upon them.	57 Così pure ai Sichemiti fu reso ciò che avevan fatto, e cadde sopra di loro la maledizione di loatam figlio di Ierobaal.
