1 And Abimelech the son of Jerobaal went to Sichem to his mother's brethren and spoke to them, and to all the kindred of his mother's father, saying:	1 Abimélek, hijo de Yerubbaal, marchó a Siquem, donde los hermanos de su madre, y les dijo a ellos y a todo el clan de la familia de su madre:
2 Speak to all the men of Sichem: whether is better for you that seventy men all the sons of Jerobaal should rule over you, or that one man should rule over you? And withal consider that I am your bone, and your flesh.	2 «Decid esto, por favor, a oídos de todos los señores de Siquem: ¿Qué es mejor para vosotros, que os estén mandando setenta hombres, todos los hijos de Yerubbaal, o que os mande uno solo? Recordad además que yo soy de vuestros huesos y de vuestra carne».
3 And his mother's brethren spoke of him to all the men of Sichem, all these words, and they inclined their hearts after Abimelech, saying: He is our brother:	3 Los hermanos de su madre hablaron de él en los mismos términos a todos los señores de Siquem, y su corazón se inclinó hacia Abimélek, porque se decían: «Es nuestro hermano».
4 And they gave him seventy weight of silver out of the temple of Baalberith: wherewith he hired to himself men that were needy, and vagabonds, and they followed him.	4 Le dieron setenta siclos de plata del templo de Baal Berit, con los que Abimélek contrató a hombres miserables, y vagabundos, que se fueron con él.
5 And he came to his father's house in Ephra, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerobaal, seventy men, upon one stone: and there remained only Joatham the youngest son of Jerobaal, who was hidden.	5 Fue entonces a casa de su padre, en Ofrá, y mató a sus hermanos, los hijos de Yerubbaal, setenta hombres, sobre una misma piedra. Sólo escapó Jotam, el hijo menor de Yerubbaal, porque se escondió.
6 And all the men of Sichem were gathered together, and all the families of the city of Mello: and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak that stood in Sichem.	6 Luego se reunieron todos los señores de Siquem y todo Bet Milló, y fueron y proclamaron rey a Abimélek junto al Terebinto de la estela que hay en Siquem.
7 This being told to Joatham, he went and stood on the top of mount Garizim: and lifting up his voice, he cried, and said: Hear me, ye men of Sichem, so may God hear you.	7 Se lo anunciaron a Jotam, quien se colocó en la cumbre del monte Garizim, alzó la voz y clamó: «Escuchadme, señores de Siquem, y que Dios os escuche.
8 The trees went to anoint a king over them: and they said to the olive tree: Reign thou over us.	8 Los árboles se pusieron en camino para ungir a uno como su rey. Dijeron al olivo: “Sé tú nuestro rey.”
9 And it answered: Can I leave my fatness, which both gods and men make use of, to come to be promoted among the trees?	9 Les respondió el olivo: “¿Voy a renunciar a mi aceite con el que gracias a mí son honrados los dioses y los hombres, para ir a vagar por encima de los árboles?”
10 And the trees said to the fig tree: Come thou and reign over us.	10 Los árboles dijeron a la higuera: “Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros.”
11 And it answered them: Can I leave my sweetness, and my delicious fruits, and go to be promoted among the other trees?	11 Les respondió la higuera: “¿Voy a renunciar a mi dulzura y a mi sabroso fruto, para ir a vagar por encima de los árboles?
12 And the trees said to the vine: Come thou and reign over us.	12 Los árboles dijeron a la vid: “Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros.”
13 And it answered them: Can I forsake my wine, that cheereth God and men, and be promoted among the other trees?	13 Les respondió la vid: “¿Voy a renunciar a mi mosto, el que alegra a los dioses y a los hombres, para ir a vagar por encima de los árboles?”
14 And all the trees said to the bramble: Come thou and reign over us.	14 Todos los árboles dijeron a la zarza: “Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros.”
15 And it answered them: If indeed you mean to make me king, come ye and rest under my shadow: but if you mean it not, let fire come out from the bramble, and devour the cedars of Libanus.	15 La zarza respondió a los árboles: “Si con sinceridad venís a ungirme a mí para reinar sobre vosotros, llegad y cobijaos a mi sombra. Y si no es así, brote fuego de la zarza y devore los cedros del Líbano.”»
16 Now therefore if you have done well, and without sin in appointing Abimelech king over you, and have dealt well with Jerobaal, and with his house, and have made a suitable return for the benefits of him, who fought for you,	16 «Ahora pues, ¿habéis obrado con sinceridad y lealtad al elegir rey a Abimélek? ¿Os habéis portado bien con Yerubbaal y su casa y le habéis tratado según el mérito de sus manos?
17 And exposed his life to dangers, to deliver you from the hands of Madian,	17 Mi padre combatió por vosotros, arriesgó su vida, os libró de la mano de Madián;
18 And you are now risen up against my father's house, and have killed his sons seventy men upon one stone, and have made Abimelech the son of his handmaid king over the inhabitants of Sichem, because he is your brother:	18 y vosotros os habéis alzado hoy contra la casa de mi padre, habéis matado a sus hijos, setenta hombres sobre una misma piedra, y habéis puesto por rey a Abimélek, el hijo de su esclava, sobre los señores de Siquem, por ser él vuestro hermano.
19 If therefore you have dealt well, and without fault with Jerobaal, and his house, rejoice ye this day in Abimelech, and may he rejoice in you.	19 Si, pues, habéis obrado con sinceridad y lealtad con Yerubbaal y con su casa en el día de hoy, que Abimélek sea vuestra alegría y vosotros la suya.
20 But if unjustly: let fire come out from him, and consume the inhabitants of Sichem, and the town of Mello: and let fire come out from the men of Sichem, and from the town of Mello, and devour Abimelech.	20 De lo contrario, que salga fuego de Abimélek y devore a los señores de Siquem y de Bet Milló; y que salga fuego de los señores de Siquem y Bet Milló y devore a Abimélek».
21 And when he had said thus he fled, and went into Bera: and dwelt there for fear of Abimelech his brother.	21 Y Jotam huyó, se puso a salvo y fue a Beer, donde se estableció, lejos del alcance de su hermano Abimélek.
22 So Abimelech reigned over Israel for three years.	22 Abimélek gobernó tres años en Israel.
23 And the Lord sent a very evil spirit between Abimelech and the inhabitants of Sichem: who began to detest him,	23 Pero Dios envió un espíritu de discordia entre Abimélek y los señores de Siquem; y los señores de Siquem traicionaron a Abimélek,
24 And to leave the crime of the murder of the seventy sons of Jerobaal, and the shedding of their blood upon Abimelech their brother, and upon the rest of the princes of the Sichemites, who aided him.	24 para que el crimen cometido contra los setenta hijos de Yerubbaal fuera vengado y su sangre cayera sobre su hermano Abimélek, que los había asesinado, y sobre los señores de Siquem, que le habían ayudado a asesinar a sus hermanos.
25 And they set an ambush against him on the top of the mountains: and while they waited for his coming, they committed robberies, taking spoils of all that passed by: and it was told Abimelech.	25 Los señores de Siquem prepararon contra él emboscadas en las cimas de los montes y saqueaban a todo el que pasaba cerca por el camino. Y se dio aviso a Abimélek.
26 And Gaal the son of Obed came with his brethren, and went over to Sichem. And the inhabitants of Sichem taking courage at his coming,	26 Gaal, hijo de Obed, acompañando a sus hermanos, vino a pasar por Siquem y se ganó la confianza de los señores de Siquem.
27 Went out into the fields, wasting the vineyards, and treading down the grapes: and singing and dancing they went into the temple of their god, and in their banquets and cups they cursed Abimelech.	27 Salieron éstos al campo a vendimiar sus viñas, pisaron las uvas, hicieron fiesta y entraron en el templo de su dios. Comieron y bebieron y maldijeron a Abimélek.
28 And Gaal the son of Obed cried: Who is Abimelech, and what is Sichem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerobaal, and hath made Zebul his servant ruler over the men of Emor the father of Sichem? Why then shall we serve him?	28 Entonces Gaal, hijo de Obed, exclamó: «¿Quién es Abimélek y qué es Siquem para que le sirvamos? ¿por qué el hijo de Yerubbaal y Zebul, su lugarteniente, no han de servir a la gente de Jamor, padre de Siquem? ¿Por qué hemos de servirles nosotros?
29 Would to God that some man would put this people under my hand, that I might remove Abimelech out of the way. And it was said to Abimelech: Gather together the multitude of an army, and come.	29 ¡Quién pusiera este pueblo en mis manos! Yo echaría a Abimélek y le diría: Refuerza tu ejército y sal a la lucha».
30 For Zebul the ruler of the city, hearing the words of Gaal, the son of Obed, was very angry,	30 Zebul, gobernador de la ciudad, se enteró de la propuesta de Gaal, hijo de Obed, y montó en cólera.
31 And sent messengers privately to Abimelech, saying: Behold Gaal the son of Obed is come into Sichem with his brethren, and endeavoureth to set the city against thee.	31 Envió secretamente mensajeros donde Abimélek, para decirle: «Mira que Gaal, hijo de Obed, con sus hermanos, ha llegado a Siquem y están soliviantando a la ciudad contra ti.
32 Arise therefore in the night with the people that is with thee and he hid in the field:	32 Por tanto, levántate de noche, tú y la gente que tienes contigo, y tiende una emboscada en el campo;
33 And betimes in the morning at sun rising set upon the city. And when he shall come out against thee with his people, do to him what thou shalt be able.	33 por la mañana temprano, en cuanto salga el sol, te levantas y te lanzas contra la ciudad. Cuando Gaal salga a tu encuentro con su gente, harás con él lo que te venga a mano».
34 Abimelech therefore arose with all his army by night, and laid ambushes near Sichem in four places.	34 Abimélek se levantó de noche con todas las tropas de que disponía y tendieron una emboscada frente a Siquem, repartidos en cuatro grupos.
35 And Gaal the son of Obed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city. And Abimelech rose up, and all his army with him from the places of the ambushes.	35 Cuando Gaal, hijo de Obed, salió y se detuvo a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, Abimélek y la tropa que le acompañaba salieron de su emboscada.
36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul: Behold a multitude cometh down from the mountains. And he answered him: Thou seest the shadows of the mountains as if they were the heads of men, and this is thy mistake.	36 Gaal vio la tropa y dijo a Zebul: «Mira la gente que baja de las cumbres de los montes». Zebul respondió: «Es la sombra de los montes lo que ves y te parecen hombres».
37 Again Gaal said: Behold there cometh people down from the middle of the land, and one troop cometh by the way that looketh towards the oak.	37 Gaal volvió a decir: «Mirad la gente que baja del lado del Ombligo de la Tierra, y otra partida llega por el camino de la Encina de los Adivinos».
38 And Zebul said to him: Where is now thy mouth wherewith thou saidst? Who is Abimelech that we should serve him? Is not this the people which thou didst despise? Go out, and fight against him.	38 Zebul le dijo entonces: «¿Qué has hecho de tu boca tú que decías: “¿Quién es Abimélek para que le sirvamos?” ¿ No es esa la gente que despreciaste? Sal, pues, ahora y pelea contra ellos».
39 So Gaal went out in the sight of the people of Sichem, and fought against Abimelech,	39 Gaal salió al frente de los señores de Siquem y presentó batalla a Abimélek.
40 Who chased and put him to flight, and drove him to the city: and many were slain of his people, even to the gate of the city:	40 Abimélek persiguió a Gaal, pero se le escapó; y muchos cayeron muertos antes de llegar a la puerta.
41 And Abimelech sat down in Ruma: but Zebul drove Gaal, and his companions out of the city, and would not suffer them to abide in it.	41 Abimélek habitó en Arumá; y Zebul expulsó a Gaal y a sus hermanos y no les dejó habitar en Siquem.
42 So the day following the people went out into the field. And it was told Abimelech.	42 Al día siguiente el pueblo salió al campo. Se dio aviso de ello a Abimélek,
43 And he took his army, and divided it into three companies, and laid ambushes in the fields. And seeing that the people came out of the city, he arose and set upon them,	43 que tomó su tropa, la repartió en tres grupos y tendió una emboscada en el campo. Cuando vio que la gente salía de la ciudad, cayó sobre ellos y los derrotó.
44 With his own company, assaulting and besieging the city: whilst the two other companies chased the enemies that were scattered about the field.	44 Abimélek y el grupo que estaba con él, atacó y tomó posiciones a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; los otros dos grupos se lanzaron contra todos los que estaban en el campo y los derrotaron.
45 And Abimelech assaulted the city all that day: and took it, and killed the inhabitants thereof, and demolished it, so that he sowed salt in it.	45 Todo aquel día estuvo Abimélek atacando a la ciudad. Cuando la tomó, mató a la población, arrasó la ciudad y la sembró de sal.
46 And when they who dwelt in the tower of Sichem had heard this, they went into the temple of their god Berith where they had made a covenant with him, and from thence the place had taken its name, and it was exceeding strong.	46 Al saberlo los vecinos de Migdal Siquem se metieron en la cripta del templo de El Berit.
47 Abimelech also hearing that the men of the tower of Sichem were gathered together,	47 Se comunicó a Abimélek que todos los señores de Migdal Siquem estaban juntos;
48 Went up into mount Selmon he and all his people with him: and taking an axe, he cut down the bough of a tree, and laying it on his shoulder and carrying it, he said to his companions: What you see me do, do you out of hand.	48 entonces Abimélek subió al monte Salmón, con toda su tropa, y tomando un hacha en sus manos, cortó una rama de árbol, la alzó y echándosela al hombro dijo a la tropa que le acompañaba: «Lo que me habéis visto hacer, deprisa, hacedlo también vosotros».
49 So they cut down boughs from the trees, every man as fast as he could, and followed their leader. And surrounding the fort they set it on fire: and so it came to pass that with the smoke and with the fire a thousand persons were killed, men and women together, of the inhabitants of the tower of Sichem.	49 Y todos sus hombres cortaron cada uno su rama; luego siguieron a Abimélek, pusieron las ramas sobre la cripta y prendieron fuego a la cripta con ellos debajo. Así murieron también todos los habitantes de Migdal Siquem, unos mil hombres y mujeres.
50 Then Abimelech departing from thence came to the town of Thebes, which he surrounded and besieged with his army.	50 Marchó Abimélek contra Tebés, la asedió y tomó.
51 And there was in the midst of the city a high tower, to which both the men and the women were fled together, and all the princes of the city, and having shut and strongly barred the gate, they stood upon the battlements of the tower to defend themselves.	51 Había en medio de la ciudad una torre fuerte, y en ella se refugiaron todos los hombres y mujeres, y todos los señores de la ciudad. Cerraron por dentro y subieron a la terraza de la torre.
52 And Abimelech coming near the tower, fought stoutly: and approaching to the gate, endeavoured to set fire to it:	52 Abimélek llegó hasta la torre, la atacó y alcanzó la puerta de la torre con ánimo de prenderle fuego.
53 And behold a certain woman casting a piece of a millstone from above, dashed it against the head of Abimelech, and broke his skull.	53 Entonces una mujer le arrojó una muela de molino a la cabeza y le partió el cráneo.
54 And he called hastily to his armourbearer, and said to him: Draw thy sword, and kill me: lest it should be said that I was slain by a woman. He did as he was commanded, and slew him.	54 El llamó enseguida a su escudero y le dijo: «Desenvaina tu espada y mátame, para que no digan de mí: Lo ha matado una mujer». Su escudero lo atravesó y murió.
55 And when he was dead, all the men of Israel that were with him, returned to their homes.	55 Cuando la gente de Israel vio que Abimélek había muerto, se volvió cada uno a su lugar.
56 And God repaid the evil, that Abimelech had done against his father, killing his seventy brethren.	56 Así devolvió Dios a Abimélek el mal que había hecho a su padre al matar a sus setenta hermanos.
57 The Sichemites also were rewarded for what they had done, and the curse of Joatham the son of Jerobaal came upon them.	57 Y también sobre la cabeza de la gente de Siquem hizo Dios caer toda su maldad. De este modo se cumplió en ellos la maldición de Jotam, hijo de Yerubbaal.
