1 These are the words, which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan, in the plain wilderness, over against the Red Sea, between Pharan and Thophel and Laban and Haseroth, where there is very much gold:	1 Dies sind die Worte, die Moses jenseits des Jordans in der Wüste, in der Steppe gegenüber von Suph, zwischen Paran, Tophel, Laban, Chazerot und Di-Sahab, an ganz Israel gerichtet hat.
2 Eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Cadesbarne.	2 Elf Tagereisen lang war der Weg vom Horeb nach dem Gebirge Seïr bis nach Kades-Barnea.
3 In the fortieth year, the eleventh month, the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel all that the Lord had commanded him to say to them:	3 Am ersten Tage des elften Monats im vierzigsten Jahre verkündete Moses den Israeliten alles, was ihm der Herr für sie befohlen hatte.
4 After that he had slain Sehon king of the Amorrhites, who dwelt in Hesebon: and Og king of Basan who abode in Astaroth, and in Edrai,	4 Er hatte bereits den Amoriterkönig Sichon, der in Hesbon wohnte, und den Og, den König von Basan, der in Aschtarot residierte, bei Edreï geschlagen.
	5 Jenseits des Jordans im Moabiterland begann Moses diese Unterweisung näherhin zu erklären:
6 l And you answered me: We have sinned against the Lord: we will go up and fight, as the Lord our God hath commanded. And when you went ready armed unto the mountain,	6 "Am Horeb hat der Herr, unser Gott, zu uns gesagt: Ihr habt nun lange genug an diesem Berg geweilt!
7 Beyond the Jordan in the land of Moab. And Moses began to expound the law, and to say:	7 Brecht auf und zieht nach dem Gebirge der Amoriter und zu allen ihren Nachbarvölkern in der Steppe, auf dem Gebirge, in der Niederung, im Südland und an der Meeresküste, zieht in das Land der Kanaaniter und zum Libanon bis zum großen Euphratstrom!
8 The Lord our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying: You have stayed long enough in this mountain:	8 Ich gebe euch dieses Land. Zieht hin und nehmt es in Besitz, das Land, das der Herr euren Vätern Abraham, Isaak und Jakob und ihren Nachkommen eidlich versprochen hat als Geschenk!
9 Turn you, and come to the mountain of the Amorrhites, and to the other places that are next to it, the plains and the hills and the vales towards the south, and by the sea shore, the land of the Chanaanites, and of Libanus, as far as the great river Euphrates.	9 In jener Zeit sprach ich zu euch: Ich kann nicht allein die Last für euch tragen.
10 Behold, said he, I have delivered it to you: go in and possess it, concerning which the Lord swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that he would give it to them, and to their seed after them.	10 Der Herr, euer Gott, hat euch vermehrt; ihr seid heute so zahlreich wie die Sterne des Himmels.
11 And I said to you at that time:	11 Der Herr, der Gott eurer Väter, möge euch noch tausendmal so viel hinzufügen! Er möge euch segnen, wie er euch verheißen hat.
12 I alone am not able to bear you: for the Lord your God hath multiplied you, and you are this day as the stars of heaven, for multitude.	12 Wie aber soll ich allein eure Bürde, eure Last und eure Streitfälle auf mich nehmen können?
13 (The Lord God of your fathers add to this number many thousands, and bless you as he hath spoken.)	13 Nehmt euch weise, einsichtsvolle und erfahrene Männer aus euren Stämmen, die ich als eure Häupter einsetzen will!
14 I alone am not able to bear your business, and the charge of you and your differences.	14 Ihr gabt mir zur Antwort: Gut ist der Vorschlag, den du ausführen willst.
15 Let me have from among you wise and understanding men, and such whose conversation is approved among your tribes, that I may appoint them your rulers.	15 Da nahm ich eure Stammeshäupter, weise und erfahrene Männer, und setzte sie als Häuptlinge über euch, als Oberste über Tausend-, Hundert-, Fünfzig-, Zehnschaften und als Aufseher in euren Stämmen.
16 Then you answered me: The thing is good which thou meanest to do.	16 Euren Richtern gab ich damals folgende Anordnung: Hört aufmerksam die Händel zwischen euren Stammesbrüdern und urteilt gerecht im Rechtsstreit mit einem Bruder oder mit einem Fremden!
17 And I took out of your tribes men wise and honourable, and appointed them rulers, tribunes, and centurions, and officers over fifties, and over tens, who might teach you all things.	17 Ihr dürft im Gericht nicht parteiisch verfahren; den Geringen und den Mächtigen sollt ihr anhören. Ihr sollt vor niemand Furcht haben, denn Gottessache ist das Gericht. Ist aber eine Sache zu schwierig für euch, so bringt sie vor mich, dann will ich sie anhören!
18 And I commanded them, saying: Hear them, and judge that which is just: whether he be one of your country, or a stranger.	18 Schon in jener Zeit gab ich euch alle diese Weisungen, nach denen ihr handeln sollt.
19 There shall be no difference of persons, you shall hear the little as well as the great: neither shall you respect any man's person, because it is the judgment of God. And if any thing seem hard to you, refer it to me, and I will hear it.	19 Wir brachen vom Horeb auf und durchstreiften jene große und schaurige Wüste, die ihr geschaut habt, in der Richtung auf das Amoritergebirge; so hat es uns der Herr, unser Gott, geboten. Wir kamen bis nach Kades-Barnea.
20 And I commanded you all things that you were to do.	20 Ich sprach zu euch: Ihr seid bis in die Nähe des Gebirges der Amoriter gelangt, das der Herr, unser Gott, uns verleihen will.
21 And departing from Horeb, we passed through the terrible and vast wilderness, which you saw, by the way of the mountain of the Amorrhite, as the Lord our God had commanded us. And when we were come into Cadesbarne,	21 Wohlan, der Herr, dein Gott, hat das Land dir jetzt übergeben! Ziehe hinauf, es in Besitz zu nehmen, wie der Herr, der Gott deiner Väter, dir geboten hat! Sei ohne Furcht und Zagen!
22 I said to you: You are come to the mountain of the Amorrhite, which the Lord our God will give to us.	22 Da kamt ihr alle zu mir und sagtet: Wir wollen doch Männer vor uns herschicken! Sie sollen uns das Land auskundschaften und uns einen Bescheid zurückbringen über den Weg, auf dem wir hinaufziehen sollen, und über die Städte, die uns begegnen.
23 See the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee: go up and possess it, as the Lord our God hath spoken to thy fathers: fear not, nor be any way discouraged.	23 Der Vorschlag war mir recht. Ich nahm aus euch zwölf Männer, aus jedem Stamm einen.
24 And you came all to me, and said: Let us send men who may view the land, and bring us word what way we shall go up, and to what cities we shall go.	24 Sie zogen hinauf nach dem Bergland, kamen bis zum Tal Eschkol und spähten es aus.
25 And because the saying pleased me, I sent of you twelve men, one of every tribe:	25 Sie brachten auch von den Früchten des Landes mit und ließen sie uns zukommen. Sie gaben uns folgende Auskunft: Schön ist das Land, das der Herr, unser Gott, uns verleihen will.
26 Who, when they had set forward and had gone up to the mountains, came as far as the valley of the cluster: and having viewed the land,	26 Doch ihr sträubtet euch hinaufzuziehen, wurdet widerspenstig gegen den Befehl des Herrn, eures Gottes.
27 Taking of the fruits thereof, to shew its fertility, they brought them to us, and said: The land is good, which the Lord our God will give us.	27 Ihr murrtet in euren Zelten und spracht: Aus Haß hat der Herr uns aus dem Ägypterland hinweggeführt, um uns den Amoritern zu unserer Vernichtung auszuliefern.
28 And you would not go up, but being incredulous to the word of the Lord our God,	28 Wohin denn sollen wir ziehen? Unsere Brüder haben unser Herz mutlos gemacht, indem sie sprachen: Ein Volk ist da von größerer Gestalt und höher gewachsen als wir; die Städte sind groß und himmelhoch befestigt, auch Enakiter sahen wir dort.
29 You murmured in your tents, and said: The Lord hateth us, and therefore he hath brought us out of the land of Egypt, that he might deliver us into the hand of the Amorrhite, and destroy us.	29 Ich aber erwiderte euch: Nur kein Entsetzen und keine Angst vor ihnen!
30 Whither shall we go up? the messengers have terrified our hearts, saying: The multitude is very great, and taller than we: the cities are great, and walled up td the sky, we have seen the sons of the Enacims there.	30 Der Herr, euer Gott, der euch selbst voranzieht, wird für euch streiten, ganz so, wie seine Hilfeleistung auch in Ägypten sichtbar war.
31 And I said to you: Fear not, neither be ye afraid of them:	31 Auch in der Wüste, die du schautest, hat dich der Herr, dein Gott, auf dem ganzen Weg, den ihr zurückgelegt habt bis zu eurer Ankunft allhier, so getragen, wie jemand sein Kind trägt.
32 The Lord God, who is your leader, himself will fight for you, as he did in Egypt in the sight of all.	32 Dennoch hattet ihr kein Vertrauen auf den Herrn, euren Gott,
33 And in the wilderness (as thou hast seen) the Lord thy God hath carried thee, as a man is wont to carry his little son, all the way that you have come, until you came to this place.	33 der euch auf dem Wege voranzog, um euch einen Lagerplatz auszusuchen: im Feuer bei der Nacht, damit ihr auf dem Wanderwege sehen konntet, in der Wolke bei Tage.
34 And yet for all this you did not believe the Lord your God,	34 Der Herr hörte eure Reden, zürnte und tat den Schwur:
35 Who went before you in the way, and marked out the place, wherein you should pitch your tents, in the night shewing you the way by fire, and in the day by the pillar of a cloud.	35 Keiner unter diesen Männern von diesem bösen Geschlecht soll das schöne Land schauen, das ich euren Vätern eidlich versprochen habe,
36 And when the Lord had heard the voice of your words, he was angry and swore, and said:	36 außer Kaleb, der Sohn des Jephunne. Er soll es schauen, ihm und seinen Söhnen verleihe ich das Land, das er betreten hat, weil er dem Herrn völlig gehorchte.
37 Not one of the men of this wicked generation shall see the good land, which I promised with an oath to your fathers:	37 Auch auf mich war der Herr zornig um euretwillen und sprach: Auch du sollst dorthin nicht gelangen.
38 Except Caleb the son of Jephone: for he shall see it, and to him I will give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath followed the Lord.	38 Josua aber, der Sohn des Nun, der dir ständig dient, soll dorthin kommen; ihm stärke den Mut, denn er wird Israel zu seinem Erbteil verhelfen.
39 Neither is his indignation against the people to be wondered at, since the Lord was angry with me also on your account, and said: Neither shalt thou go in thither.	39 Eure Kleinen aber, von denen ihr sagtet, sie würden zur Beute werden, und eure Söhne, die heute noch nicht zwischen Gut und Bös zu unterscheiden vermögen, werden dorthin gelangen; ihnen will ich es verleihen; sie sollen es in Besitz nehmen!
40 But Josue the son of Nun, thy minister, he shall go in for thee: exhort and encourage him, and he shall divide the land by lot to Israel.	40 Ihr aber macht kehrt und brecht auf zur Steppe in der Richtung auf das Schilfmeer!
41 Your children, of whom you said that they should be led away captives, and your sons who know not this day the difference of good and evil, they shall go in: and to them I will give the land, and they shall possess it.	41 Da gabt ihr mir zur Antwort: Wir haben uns gegen den Herrn, unsern Gott, versündigt; wir wollen nun doch hinaufziehen und kämpfen, wie uns der Herr, unser Gott, befohlen hat. Und ihr gürtetet euch insgesamt mit euren Kriegswaffen und zogt leichtsinnig hinauf gegen das Bergland.
42 But return you and go into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.	42 Da sprach der Herr zu mir: Sage ihnen: Zieht nicht hinauf und laßt euch nicht in einen Kampf ein, denn ich bin nicht in eurer Mitte; sicher werdet ihr eine Niederlage von euren Feinden erleiden!
43 dummy verses inserted by amos	43 Dies sagte ich euch, ihr aber gehorchtet nicht, wart widerspenstig gegen des Herrn Geheiß und zogt kühn gegen das Bergland.
44 The Lord said to me: Say to them: Go not up, and fight not, for I am not with you: lest you fall before your enemies.	44 Da rückten die Amoriter, die auf jenem Berglande wohnten, aus, euch entgegen. Sie verfolgten euch wie Bienenschwärme und zersprengten euch von Seïr bis Chorma.
45 I spoke, and you hearkened not: but resisting the commandment of the Lord, and swelling with pride, you went up into the mountain.	45 Nach der Rückkehr weintet ihr vor dem Herrn; der Herr aber beachtete euer Jammergeschrei nicht und hörte nicht auf euch.
46 And the Amorrhite that dwelt in the mountains coming out, and meeting you, chased you, as bees do: and made slaughter of you from Seir as far as Horma.	46 Dann verging eine lange Zeit, die ihr in Kades verbracht habt.
47 And when you returned and wept before the Lord, he heard you not, neither would he yield to ;your voice.
