1 And after these things the Lord appointed also other seventy-two: and he sent them two and two before his face into every city and place whither he himself was to come.	1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him in pairs, to all thetowns and places he himself would be visiting.
2 And he said to them: The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send labourers into his harvest.	2 And he said to them, 'The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest tosend labourers to do his harvesting.
3 Go: Behold I send you as lambs among wolves.	3 Start off now, but look, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.
4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes; and salute no man by the way.	4 Take no purse with you, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road.
5 Into whatsoever house you enter, first say: Peace be to this house.	5 Whatever house you enter, let your first words be, "Peace to this house!"
6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you.	6 And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you.
7 And in the same house, remain, eating and drinking such things as they have: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Remove not from house to house.	7 Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves hiswages; do not move from house to house.
8 And into what city soever you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you.	8 Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is put before you.
9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say to them: The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.	9 Cure those in it who are sick, and say, "The kingdom of God is very near to you."
10 But into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not, going forth into the streets thereof, say:	10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not make you welcome, go out into its streets and say,
11 Even the very dust of your city that cleaveth to us, we wipe off against you. Yet know this, that the kingdom of God is at hand.	11 "We wipe off the very dust of your town that clings to our feet, and leave it with you. Yet be sure ofthis: the kingdom of God is very near."
12 I say to you, it shall be more tolerable at that day for Sodom, than for that city.	12 I tel you, on the great Day it wil be more bearable for Sodom than for that town.
13 Woe to thee, Corozain, woe to thee, Bethsaida. For if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the mighty works that have been wrought in you, they would have done penance long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.	13 'Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done inTyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgement, than for you.	14 And still, it wil be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the Judgement than for you.
15 And thou, Capharnaum, which art exalted unto heaven, thou shalt be thrust down to hell.	15 And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be raised high as heaven? You shal be flung down tohell.
16 He that heareth you, heareth me; and he that despiseth you, despiseth me; and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me.	16 'Anyone who listens to you listens to me; anyone who rejects you rejects me, and those who rejectme reject the one who sent me.'
17 And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying: Lord, the devils also are subject to us in thy name.	17 The seventy-two came back rejoicing. 'Lord,' they said, 'even the devils submit to us when we useyour name.'
18 And he said to them: I saw Satan like lightening falling from heaven.	18 He said to them, 'I watched Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
19 Behold, I have given you power to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall hurt you.	19 Look, I have given you power to tread down serpents and scorpions and the whole strength of theenemy; nothing shal ever hurt you.
20 But yet rejoice not in this, that spirits are subject unto you; but rejoice in this, that your names are written in heaven.	20 Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you; rejoice instead that your names are written inheaven.'
21 In that same hour, he rejoiced in the Holy Ghost, and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to little ones. Yea, Father, for so it hath seemed good in thy sight.	21 Just at this time, fil ed with joy by the Holy Spirit, he said, 'I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and ofearth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to little children. Yes, Father,for that is what it has pleased you to do.
22 All things are delivered to me by my Father; and no one knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and to whom the Son will reveal him.	22 Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except theFather, and who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.'
23 And turning to his disciples, he said: Blessed are the eyes that see the things which you see.	23 Then turning to his disciples he spoke to them by themselves, 'Blessed are the eyes that see whatyou see,
24 For I say to you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see the things that you see, and have not seen them; and to hear the things that you hear, and have not heard them.	24 for I tel you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hearwhat you hear, and never heard it.'
25 And behold a certain lawyer stood up, tempting him, and saying, Master, what must I do to possess eternal life?	25 And now a lawyer stood up and, to test him, asked, 'Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'
26 But he said to him: What is written in the law? how readest thou?	26 He said to him, 'What is written in the Law? What is your reading of it?'
27 He answering, said: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind: and thy neighbour as thyself.	27 He replied, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, with all yourstrength, and with al your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.'
28 And he said to him: Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.	28 Jesus said to him, 'You have answered right, do this and life is yours.'
29 But he willing to justify himself, said to Jesus: And who is my neighbour?	29 But the man was anxious to justify himself and said to Jesus, 'And who is my neighbour?'
30 And Jesus answering, said: A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, who also stripped him, and having wounded him went away, leaving him half dead.	30 In answer Jesus said, 'A man was once on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fel into thehands of bandits; they stripped him, beat him and then made off, leaving him half dead.
31 And it chanced, that a certain priest went down the same way: and seeing him, passed by.	31 Now a priest happened to be travel ing down the same road, but when he saw the man, he passed byon the other side.
32 In like manner also a Levite, when he was near the place and saw him, passed by.	32 In the same way a Levite who came to the place saw him, and passed by on the other side.
33 But a certain Samaritan being on his journey, came near him; and seeing him, was moved with compassion.	33 But a Samaritan travel er who came on him was moved with compassion when he saw him.
34 And going up to him, bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine: and setting him upon his own beast, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.	34 He went up to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He then lifted him ontohis own mount and took him to an inn and looked after him.
35 And the next day he took out two pence, and gave to the host, and said: Take care of him; and whatsoever thou shalt spend over and above, I, at my return, will repay thee.	35 Next day, he took out two denari and handed them to the innkeeper and said, "Look after him, andon my way back I wil make good any extra expense you have."
36 Which of these three, in thy opinion, was neighbour to him that fell among the robbers?	36 Which of these three, do you think, proved himself a neighbour to the man who fel into the bandits'hands?'
37 But he said: He that shewed mercy to him. And Jesus said to him: Go, and do thou in like manner.	37 He replied, 'The one who showed pity towards him.' Jesus said to him, 'Go, and do the sameyourself.'
38 Now it came to pass as they went, that he entered into a certain town: and a certain woman named Martha, received him into her house.	38 In the course of their journey he came to a vil age, and a woman named Martha welcomed him intoher house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sitting also at the Lord's feet, heard his word.	39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking.
40 But Martha was busy about much serving. Who stood and said: Lord, hast thou no care that my sister hath left me alone to serve? speak to her therefore, that she help me.	40 Now Martha, who was distracted with all the serving, came to him and said, 'Lord, do you not carethat my sister is leaving me to do the serving al by myself? Please tel her to help me.'
41 And the Lord answering, said to her: Martha, Martha, thou art careful, and art troubled about many things:	41 But the Lord answered, 'Martha, Martha,' he said, 'you worry and fret about so many things,
42 But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.	42 and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part, and it is not to betaken from her.'
