DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Let there be a trumpet in thy throat like an eagle upon the house of the Lord: because they have transgressed my covenant, and have violated my law.1 A trumpet to your lips, You who watch over the house of the LORD! Since they have violated my covenant, and sinned against my law,
They shall call upon me: O my God, we, Israel, know thee.2 While to me they cry out, "O, God of Israel, we know you!"
Israel hath cast off the thing that is good, the enemy shall pursue him.3 The men of Israel have thrown away what is good; the enemy shall pursue them.
They have reigned, but not by me: they have been princes, and I knew not: of their silver, and their gold they have made idols to themselves, that they might perish.4 They made kings, but not by my authority; they established princes, but without my approval. With their silver and gold they made idols for themselves, to their own destruction.
Thy calf, O Samaria, is cast off, my wrath is kindled against them. How long will they be incapable of being cleansed ?5 Cast away your calf, O Samaria! my wrath is kindled against them; How long will they be unable to attain innocence in Israel?
For itself also is the invention of Israel: a workman made it, and it is no god: for the calf of Samaria shall be turned to spiders' webs.6 The work of an artisan no god at all, Destined for the flames-- such is the calf of Samaria!
For they shall sow wind, and reap a whirlwind, there is no standing stalk in it, the bud shall yield no meal; end if it should yield, strangers shall eat it.7 When they sow the wind, they shall reap the whirlwind; The stalk of grain that forms no ear can yield no flour; Even if it could, strangers would swallow it.
Israel is swallowed up: now is he become among the nations like an unclean vessel.8 Israel is swallowed up; he is now among the nations a thing of no value.
For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath given gifts to his lovers.9 They went up to Assyria-- a wild ass off on its own-- Ephraim bargained for lovers.
But even though they shall have hired the nations, now will I gather them together: and they shall rest a while from the burden of the king, and the princes.10 Even though they bargain with the nations, I will now gather an army; King and princes shall shortly succumb under the burden.
Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin: altars are become to him unto sin.11 When Ephraim made many altars to expiate sin, his altars became occasions of sin.
I shall write to him my manifold laws, which have been accounted as foreign.12 Though I write for him my many ordinances, they are considered as a stranger's.
They shall offer victims, they shall sacrifice flesh, and shall eat it, and the Lord will not receive them: now will he remember their iniquity, and will visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.13 Though they offer sacrifice, immolate flesh and eat it, the LORD is not pleased with them. He shall still remember their guilt and punish their sins; they shall return to Egypt.
And Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and hath built temples: and Juda hath built many fenced cities: and I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the houses thereof.14 Israel has forgotten his maker and built palaces. Judah, too, has fortified many cities, but I will send fire upon his cities, to devour their castles.
