1 She prospered their works in the hands of the holy prophet.	1 Essa condusse felicemente le loro imprese per mano di un santo profeta.
2 They went through wildernesses that were not inhabited, and in desert places they pitched their tents.	2 Percorsero un deserto inospitale e fissarono le tende in luoghi impraticabili;
3 They stood against their enemies, and revenged themselves of their adversaries.	3 si opposero ai nemici e respinsero gli avversari.
4 They were thirsty, and they called upon thee, and water was given them out of the high rock, and a refreshment of their thirst out of the hard stone.	4 Ebbero sete e gridarono a te, e fu data loro acqua da una roccia scoscesa e rimedio alla sete da una dura pietra.
5 For by what things their enemies were punished, when their drink failed them, while the children of Israel abounded therewith and rejoiced:	5 Infatti ciò che servì per castigare i loro nemici, fu per essi di beneficio nel bisogno.
6 By the same things they in their need were benefited.	6 In luogo della fonte di un fiume perenne, intorbidito con putrido sangue
7 For instead of a fountain of an ever running river, thou gavest human blood to the unjust.	7 in punizione di un decreto infanticida, tu desti loro inaspettatamente acqua abbondante,
8 And whilst they were diminished for a manifest reproof of their murdering the infants, thou gavest to thine abundant water unlooked for:	8 dimostrando per mezzo della sete di allora come furono castigati i nemici.
9 Shewing by the thirst that was then, how thou didst exalt thine, and didst kill their adversaries.	9 Difatti, quando furono provati, benché corretti con misericordia, compresero quanto erano tormentati gli empi, giudicati con ira.
10 For when they were tried, and chastised with mercy, they knew how the wicked were judged with wrath and tormented.	10 Certamente tu provasti gli uni come un padre che ammonisce, ma ricercasti gli altri come un re severo che condanna.
11 For thou didst admonish and try them as a father: but the others, as a severe king, thou didst examine and condemn.	11 Lontani o vicini erano ugualmente tormentati:
12 For whether absent or present, they were tormented alike.	12 li colse infatti una duplice sofferenza e un gemito per i ricordi delle cose passate.
13 For a double affliction came upon them, and a groaning for the remembrance of things past.	13 Quando udirono che per mezzo delle loro pene quelli erano stati beneficati, vi scorsero il Signore.
14 For when they heard that by their punishments the others were benefited, they remembered the Lord, wondering at the end of what was come to pass.	14 Poiché colui che prima avevano esposto e poi pubblicamente deriso, al termine degli avvenimenti dovettero ammirarlo, dopo aver sofferto una sete diversa da quella dei giusti.
15 For whom they scorned before, when he was thrown out at the time of his being wickedly exposed to perish, him they admired in the end, when they saw the event: their thirsting being unlike to that of the just.	15 In pena degli stolti ragionamenti della loro ingiustizia, nei quali, errando, rendevano culto ad animali senza ragione e a vili bestie, inviasti contro di loro per punizione una moltitudine di animali senza ragione,
16 But for the foolish devices of their iniquity, because some being deceived worshipped dumb serpents and worthless beasts, thou didst send upon them a multitude of dumb beasts for vengeance.	16 perché comprendessero che ognuno è punito per mezzo di quelle cose con le quali pecca.
17 That they might know that by what things a man sinneth, by the same also he is tormented.	17 Non era certo in difficoltà la tua mano onnipotente, che aveva creato il mondo da materia informe, di mandare contro di loro una moltitudine di orsi o di leoni feroci,
18 For thy almighty hand, which made the world of matter without form, was not unable to send upon them a multitude of bears, or fierce lions,	18 o di fiere sconosciute piene di furore, create da poco, o che spirano alito infuocato, o che esalano vapore di fumo, o che sprizzano dagli occhi terribili scintille,
19 Or unknown beasts of a new kind, full of rage: either breathing out a fiery vapour, or sending forth a stinking smoke, or shooting horrible sparks out of their eyes:	19 delle quali non solo il morso poteva sterminarli, ma anche lo sguardo spaventoso poteva annientarli.
20 Whereof not only the hurt might be able to destroy them, but also the very sight might kill them through fear.	20 Anche senza di queste cose, con un solo soffio, potevano cadere, perseguitati dalla giustizia e annientati dal tuo soffio onnipotente; ma tu hai disposto ogni cosa con misura, numero e peso.
21 Yea and without these, they might have been slain with one blast, persecuted by their own deeds, and scattered by the breath of thy power: but thou hast ordered all things in measure, and number, and weight.	21 Poiché la tua straordinaria potenza è sempre con te, chi potrà resistere alla forza del tuo braccio?
22 For great power always belonged to thee alone: and who shall resist the strength of thy arm?	22 Tutto l'universo davanti a te è come polvere sulla bilancia, e come una goccia di rugiada che di buon mattino scende sulla terra.
23 For the whole world before thee is as the least grain of the balance, and as a drop of the morning dew, that falleth down upon the earth:	23 Hai pietà di tutti, perché tutto puoi e dimentichi i peccati degli uomini in vista della conversione.
24 But thou hast mercy upon all, because thou canst do all things, and overlookest the sins of men for the sake of repentance.	24 Ami tutte le cose che esistono e niente detesti di ciò che hai fatto, perché se tu odiassi qualche cosa, neppure l'avresti formata.
25 For thou lovest all things that are, and hatest none of the things which thou hast made: for thou didst not appoint, or make any thing hating it.	25 E come potrebbe sussistere una cosa, se tu non volessi, o conservarsi ciò che non è stato da te chiamato?
26 And how could any thing endure, if thou wouldst not? or be preserved, if not called by thee.	26 Ma tu hai pietà di tutte le cose, perché sono tue, Signore, amante della vita.
27 But thou sparest all: because they are thine, O Lord, who lovest souls.
