DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
My son, forget not my law, and let thy heart keep my commandments.1 My child, do not forget my teaching, let your heart keep my principles,
For they shall add to thee length of days, and years of life and peace.2 since they will increase your length of days, your years of life and your wel -being.
Let not mercy and truth leave thee, put them about thy neck, and write them in the tables of thy heart:3 Let faithful love and constancy never leave you: tie them round your neck, write them on the tablet ofyour heart.
And thou shalt And grace and good understanding before God and men.4 Thus you will find favour and success in the sight of God and of people.
Have confidence in the Lord with all thy heart, and lean not upon thy own prudence.5 Trust wholeheartedly in Yahweh, put no faith in your own perception;
In all thy ways think on him, and he will direct thy steps.6 acknowledge him in every course you take, and he wil see that your paths are smooth.
I Be not wise in thy own conceit: fear God, and depart from evil:7 Do not congratulate yourself on your own wisdom, fear Yahweh and turn your back on evil:
For it shall be health to thy navel, and moistening to thy bones.8 health-giving, this, to your body, relief to your bones.
Honour the Lord with thy substance, and give him of the first of all thy fruits :9 Honour Yahweh with what goods you have and with the first-fruits of al your produce;
And thy barns shall be filled with abundance, and thy presses shall run over with wine.10 then your barns will be fil ed with corn, your vats overflowing with new wine.
My son, reject not the correction of the Lord: and do not faint when thou art chastised by him:11 My child, do not scorn correction from Yahweh, do not resent his reproof;
For whom the Lord loveth, he chastiseth: and as a father in the son he pleaseth himself.12 for Yahweh reproves those he loves, as a father the child whom he loves.
Blessed is the man that findeth wisdom and is rich in prudence:13 Blessed are those who have discovered wisdom, those who have acquired understanding!
The purchasing thereof is better than the merchandise of silver, and her fruit than the chiefest and purest gold:14 Gaining her is more rewarding than silver, her yield is more valuable than gold.
She is more precious than all riches : and all the things that are desired, are not to be compared with her.15 She is beyond the price of pearls, nothing you could covet is her equal.
Length of days is in her right hand, and in her left hand riches and glory.16 In her right hand is length of days; in her left hand, riches and honour.
Her ways are beautiful ways, and all her paths are peaceable.17 Her ways are filled with delight, her paths al lead to contentment.
She is a tree of life to them that lay hold on her: and he that shall retain her is blessed.18 She is a tree of life for those who hold her fast, those who cling to her live happy lives.
The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth, hath established the heavens by prudence.19 In wisdom, Yahweh laid the earth's foundations, in understanding he spread out the heavens.
By his wisdom the depths have broken out, and the clouds grow thick with dew20 Through his knowledge the depths were cleft open, and the clouds distil the dew.
My son, let not these things depart from thy eyes: keep the law and counsel:21 My child, hold to sound advice and prudence, never let them out of sight;
And there shall be life to thy soul, and grace to thy mouth.22 they wil give life to your soul and beauty to your neck.
Then shalt thou walk confidently in thy way, and thy foot shall not stumble:23 You wil go on your way in safety, your feet wil not stumble.
If thou sleep, thou shalt not fear: thou shalt rest, and thy sleep shall be sweet.24 When you go to bed, you wil not be afraid; once in bed, your sleep will be sweet.
Be not afraid of sudden fear, nor of the power of the wicked falling upon thee.25 Have no fear either of sudden terror or of attack mounted by wicked men,
For the Lord will be at thy side, and will keep thy foot that thou be not taken.26 since Yahweh will be your guarantor, he wil keep your steps from the snare.
Do not withhold him from doing good, who is able: if thou art able, do good thyself also.27 Refuse no kindness to those who have a right to it, if it is in your power to perform it.
Say not to thy friend: Go, and come again: and to morrow I will give to thee: when thou canst give at present.28 Do not say to your neighbour, 'Go away! Come another time! I will give it you tomorrow,' if you can do itnow.
Practise not evil against thy friend, when he hath confidence in thee.29 Do not plot harm against your neighbour who is living unsuspecting beside you.
Strive not against a man without cause, when he hath done thee no evil.30 Do not pick a groundless quarrel with anyone who has done you no harm.
Envy not the unjust man, and do not follow his ways:31 Do not envy the man of violence, never model your conduct on his;
For every mocker is an abomination to the Lord, and his communication is with the simple.32 for the wilful wrong-doer is abhorrent to Yahweh, who confides only in the honest.
Want is from the Lord in the house of the wicked: but the habitations of the just shall be blessed.33 Yahweh's curse lies on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the upright.
He shall scorn the scorners, and to the meek he will give grace.34 He mocks those who mock, but accords his favour to the humble.
The wise shall possess glory: the promotion of fools is disgrace.35 Glory is the portion of the wise, all that fools inherit is contempt.
