If it had not been that the Lord was with us, let Israel now say: | 1 A Canticle in steps. When the Lord turned back the captivity of Zion, we became like those who are consoled. |
If it had not been that the Lord was with us, When men rose up against us | 2 Then our mouth was filled with gladness and our tongue with exultation. Then they will say among the nations: “The Lord has done great things for them.” |
perhaps they had swallowed us up alive. When their fury was enkindled against us, | 3 The Lord has done great things for us. We have become joyful. |
perhaps the waters had swallowed us up. | 4 Convert our captivity, O Lord, like a torrent in the south. |
Our soul hath passed through a torrent: perhaps our soul had passed through a water insupportable. | 5 Those who sow in tears shall reap in exultation. |
Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us to be a prey to their teeth. | 6 When departing, they went forth and wept, sowing their seeds. |
Our soul hath been delivered as a sparrow out of the snare of the followers. The snare is broken, and we are delivered. | 7 But when returning, they will arrive with exultation, carrying their sheaves. |
Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. |
