DOUAI-RHEIMSLXX
Silver hath beginnings of its veins, and gold hath a place wherein it is melted.1 εστιν γαρ αργυριω τοπος οθεν γινεται τοπος δε χρυσιω οθεν διηθειται
Iron is taken out of the earth, and stone melted with heat is turned into brass.2 σιδηρος μεν γαρ εκ γης γινεται χαλκος δε ισα λιθω λατομειται
He hath set a time for darkness, and the end of all things he considereth, the stone also that is in the dark and the shadow of death.3 ταξιν εθετο σκοτει και παν περας αυτος εξακριβαζεται λιθος σκοτια και σκια θανατου
The flood divideth from the people that are on their journey, those whom the food of the needy man hath forgotten, and who cannot be come at.4 διακοπη χειμαρρου απο κονιας οι δε επιλανθανομενοι οδον δικαιαν ησθενησαν εκ βροτων
The land, out of which bread grew in its place, hath been overturned with fire.5 γη εξ αυτης εξελευσεται αρτος υποκατω αυτης εστραφη ωσει πυρ
The stones of it are the place of sapphires, and the clods of it are gold.6 τοπος σαπφειρου οι λιθοι αυτης και χωμα χρυσιον αυτω
The bird hath not known the path, neither hath the eye of the vulture beheld it.7 τριβος ουκ εγνω αυτην πετεινον και ου παρεβλεψεν αυτην οφθαλμος γυπος
The children of the merchants have not trodden it, neither hath the lioness passed by it.8 ουκ επατησαν αυτην υιοι αλαζονων ου παρηλθεν επ' αυτης λεων
He hath stretched forth his hand to the flint, he hath overturned mountains from the roots.9 εν ακροτομω εξετεινεν χειρα αυτου κατεστρεψεν δε εκ ριζων ορη
In the rocks he hath cut out rivers, and his eye hath seen every precious thing.10 δινας δε ποταμων ερρηξεν παν δε εντιμον ειδεν μου ο οφθαλμος
The depths also of rivers he hath searched, and hidden things he hath brought forth to light.11 βαθη δε ποταμων ανεκαλυψεν εδειξεν δε εαυτου δυναμιν εις φως
But where is wisdom to be found, and where is the place of understanding?12 η δε σοφια ποθεν ευρεθη ποιος δε τοπος εστιν της επιστημης
Man knoweth not the price thereof, neither is it found in the land of them that live in delights.13 ουκ οιδεν βροτος οδον αυτης ουδε μη ευρεθη εν ανθρωποις
The depth saith: It is not in me: and the sea saith: It is not with me.14 αβυσσος ειπεν ουκ εστιν εν εμοι και θαλασσα ειπεν ουκ εστιν μετ' εμου
The finest gold shall not purchase it, neither shall silver be weighed in exchange for it15 ου δωσει συγκλεισμον αντ' αυτης και ου σταθησεται αργυριον ανταλλαγμα αυτης
It shall not be compared with the dyed colours of India, or with the most precious stone sardonyx, or the sapphire.16 και ου συμβασταχθησεται χρυσιω ωφιρ εν ονυχι τιμιω και σαπφειρω
Gold or crystal cannot equal it, neither shall any vessels of gold be changed for it.17 ουκ ισωθησεται αυτη χρυσιον και υαλος και το αλλαγμα αυτης σκευη χρυσα
High and eminent things shall not be mentioned in comparison of it: but wisdom is drawn out of secret places.18 μετεωρα και γαβις ου μνησθησεται και ελκυσον σοφιαν υπερ τα εσωτατα
The topaz of Ethiopia shall not be equal to it, neither shall it be compared to the cleanest dyeing.19 ουκ ισωθησεται αυτη τοπαζιον αιθιοπιας χρυσιω καθαρω ου συμβασταχθησεται
Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?20 η δε σοφια ποθεν ευρεθη ποιος δε τοπος εστιν της συνεσεως
It is hid from the eyes of all living. and the fowls of the air know it not.21 λεληθεν παντα ανθρωπον και απο πετεινων του ουρανου εκρυβη
Destruction and death have said: With our ears we have heard the fame thereof.22 η απωλεια και ο θανατος ειπαν ακηκοαμεν δε αυτης το κλεος
God understandeth the way of it, and he knoweth the place thereof.23 ο θεος ευ συνεστησεν αυτης την οδον αυτος δε οιδεν τον τοπον αυτης
For he beholdeth the ends of the world: and looketh on all things that are under heaven.24 αυτος γαρ την υπ' ουρανον πασαν εφορα ειδως τα εν τη γη παντα α εποιησεν
Who made a weight for the winds and weighed the waters by measure.25 ανεμων σταθμον υδατος τε μετρα
When he gave a law for the rain, and a way for the sounding storms.26 οτε εποιησεν ουτως υετον ηριθμησεν και οδον εν τιναγματι φωνας
Then he saw it, and declared, and prepared, and searched it.27 τοτε ειδεν αυτην και εξηγησατο αυτην ετοιμασας εξιχνιασεν
And he said to man: Behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom: and to depart from evil, is understanding.28 ειπεν δε ανθρωπω ιδου η θεοσεβεια εστιν σοφια το δε απεχεσθαι απο κακων εστιν επιστημη
