1 But after this, when there was a festival of the Lord, and a good dinner was prepared in Tobias's house,	1 Durante il regno di Assaraddon ritornai a casa mia e mi furono ridati la moglie Anna e il mio figlio Tobia. Alla nostra festa di Pentecoste, che è la festa delle Settimane, mi prepararono un lauto pranzo e mi misi a tavola:
2 He said to his son: Go, and bring some of our tribe that fear God, to feast with us.	2 la tavola era imbandita di varie vivande. Dissi a mio figlio Tobia: "Figlio, va' a vedere se incontri qualche povero fra i compatrioti deportati a Ninive, qualcuno che con tutto il cuore si ricordi del Signore, e conducilo perché pranzi insieme con noi. Ti aspetto, figlio, fino al tuo ritorno".
3 And when he had gone, returning he told him, that one of the children of Israel lay slain in the street. And he forthwith leaped up from his place at the table, and left his dinner, and came fasting to the body:	3 Tobia uscì in cerca di un povero tra i nostri fratelli. Di ritorno disse: "Padre!" Gli risposi: "Ebbene, figlio mio?". Mi rispose: "Padre, hanno assassinato uno della nostra gente e l'hanno gettato sulla piazza. L'hanno strangolato solo un momento fa".
4 And taking it up carried it privately to his house, that after the sun was down, he might bury him cautiously.	4 Allora feci un salto lasciando il pranzo intatto, tolsi il corpo dalla piazza, lo deposi in una camera onde seppellirlo al tramonto del sole.
5 And when he had hid the body, he ate bread with mourning and fear,	5 Ritornato a casa, feci un bagno e presi il pasto con tristezza
6 Remembering the word which the Lord spoke by Amos the prophet: Your festival days shall be turned into lamentation and mourning.	6 ricordando la frase del profeta Amos contro Betel: "Si cambieranno le vostre feste in lutto, tutti i vostri canti in lamento". E piansi.
7 So when the sun was down, he went and buried him.	7 Quando poi tramontò il sole, andai a scavare una fossa e lo seppellii.
8 Now all his neighbours blamed him, saying: Once already commandment was given for thee to be slain because of this matter, and thou didst scarce escape the sentence of death, and dost thou again bury the dead?	8 I miei vicini mi deridevano dicendo: "Non ha più paura! Proprio per questo motivo lo hanno già ricercato per ucciderlo ed è fuggito; ora eccolo di nuovo a seppellire i morti".
9 But Tobias fearing God more than the king, carried off the bodies of them that were slain, and hid them in his house, and at midnight buried them.	9 In quella notte, dopo il bagno, entrai nel mio cortile e mi addormentai lungo il muro del cortile con la faccia scoperta a causa del caldo.
10 Now it happened one day, that being wearied with burying, he came to his house, and cast himself down by the wall and slept,	10 Non sapevo che sopra di me sul muro c'erano dei passeri; i loro escrementi ancora caldi caddero sui miei occhi e mi produssero delle macchie bianche; mi rivolsi ai medici per curarmi, però quanto più unguenti mi applicavano, tanto più mi si oscuravano gli occhi per le macchie bianche, fino a perdere completamente la vista. Rimasi cieco per quattro anni; tutti i miei parenti ne ebbero pena. Achikar provvide al mio sostentamento durante i due anni che precedettero la sua partenza per l'Elimaide.
11 And as he was sleeping, hot dung out of a swallow's nest fell upon his eyes, and he was made blind.	11 In quel tempo mia moglie Anna si era data ai lavori domestici per guadagnare denaro.
12 Now this trial the Lord therefore permitted to happen to him, that an example might be given to posterity of his patience, as also of holy Job.	12 Quando essa consegnava i lavori, i clienti le davano la paga. Ora il sette di marzo, terminato un pezzo di stoffa e inviatolo ai clienti, questi, oltre alla mercede completa, le fecero dono di un capretto per la tavola.
13 For whereas he had always feared God from his infancy, and kept his commandments, he repined not against God because the evil of blindness had befallen him,	13 Quando il capretto entrò da me, cominciò a belare. Chiamata allora la moglie, le dissi: "Da dove viene questo capretto? Non sarà stato rubato? Restituiscilo ai padroni, perché non abbiamo il diritto di mangiare alcuna cosa rubata".
14 But continued immoveable in the fear of God, giving thanks to God all the days of his life.	14 Essa mi rispose: "Mi è stato dato in sovrappiù della paga". Però io non le credevo e insistevo perché lo restituisse ai proprietari, arrossendo per quello che aveva fatto. Essa mi replicò: "E dove sono le tue elemosine? Dove sono le tue buone opere? Lo si vede da come sei ridotto".
15 For as the kings insulted over holy Job: so his relations and kinsmen mocked at his life, saying:
16 Where is thy hope, for which thou gavest alms, and buriedst the dead?
17 But Tobias rebuked them, saying: Speak not so:
18 For we are the children of the saints, and look for that life which God will give to those that never change their faith from him.
19 Now Anna his wife went daily to weaving work, and she brought home what she could get for their living by the labour of her hands.
20 Whereby it came to pass, that she received a young kid, and brought it home:
21 And when her husband heard it bleating, he said: Take heed, lest perhaps it be stolen: restore ye it to its owners, for it is not lawful for us either to eat or to touch any thing that cometh by theft.
22 At these words his wife being angry answered: It is evident thy hope is come to nothing, and thy alms now appear.
23 And with these, and other such like words she upbraided him.
