| 1 ORA, cinque giorni appresso, il sommo sacerdote Anania discese, insieme con gli anziani, e con un certo Tertullo, oratore; e comparvero davanti al governatore contro a Paolo. | 1 And after five days the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and a spokesman, one Tertullus. They laid before the governor their case against Paul; |
| 2 Ed esso essendo stato chiamato, Tertullo cominciò ad accusarlo, dicendo: | 2 and when he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying: "Since through you we enjoy much peace, and since by your provision, most excellent Felix, reforms are introduced on behalf of this nation, |
| 3 Godendo per te di molta pace, ed essendo molti buoni ordini stati fatti da te a questa nazione, per lo tuo provvedimento, noi in tutto e per tutto lo riconosciamo con ogni ringraziamento, eccellentissimo Felice. | 3 in every way and everywhere we accept this with all gratitude. |
| 4 Or acciocchè io non ti dia più lungamente impaccio, io ti prego che secondo la tua equità, tu ascolti quello che abbiamo a dirti in breve. | 4 But, to detain you no further, I beg you in your kindness to hear us briefly. |
| 5 Che è, che noi abbiam trovato quest’uomo essere una peste, e commuover sedizione fra tutti i Giudei che son per lo mondo, ed essere il capo della setta de’ Nazarei. | 5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, an agitator among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. |
| 6 Il quale ha eziandio tentato di profanare il tempio; onde noi, presolo, lo volevam giudicare secondo la nostra legge. | 6 He even tried to profane the temple, but we seized him. |
| 7 Ma il capitano Lisia sopraggiunto, con grande sforzo, ce l’ha tratto delle mani, e l’ha mandato a te; | 7 . |
| 8 comandando eziandio che gli accusatori d’esso venissero a te; da lui potrai tu stesso, per l’esaminazione che tu ne farai, saper la verità di tutte le cose delle quali non l’accusiamo. | 8 By examining him yourself you will be able to learn from him about everything of which we accuse him." |
| 9 E i Giudei acconsentirono anch’essi a queste cose, dicendo che stavan così | 9 The Jews also joined in the charge, affirming that all this was so. |
| 10 E Paolo, dopo che il governatore gli ebbe fatto cenno che parlasse, rispose: Sapendo che tu già da molti anni sei stato giudice di questa nazione, più animosamente parlo a mia difesa. | 10 And when the governor had motioned to him to speak, Paul replied: "Realizing that for many years you have been judge over this nation, I cheerfully make my defense. |
| 11 Poichè tu puoi venire in notizia che non vi son più di dodici giorni, che io salii in Gerusalemme per adorare. | 11 As you may ascertain, it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Jerusalem; |
| 12 Ed essi non mi hanno trovato nel tempio disputando con alcuno, nè facendo raunata di popolo nelle sinagoghe, nè per la città. | 12 and they did not find me disputing with any one or stirring up a crowd, either in the temple or in the synagogues, or in the city. |
| 13 Nè anche possono provare le cose, delle quali ora mi accusano. | 13 Neither can they prove to you what they now bring up against me. |
| 14 Ora, ben ti confesso io questo, che, secondo la professione, la quale essi chiamano setta, così servo all’Iddio de’ padri, credendo a tutte le cose che sono scritte nella legge, e ne’ profeti; | 14 But this I admit to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers, believing everything laid down by the law or written in the prophets, |
| 15 avendo speranza in Dio, che la risurrezione de’ morti, così giusti come ingiusti, la quale essi ancora aspettano, avverrà. | 15 having a hope in God which these themselves accept, that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust. |
| 16 E intanto, io esercito me stesso in aver del continuo la coscienza senza offesa inverso Iddio, e inverso gli uomini. | 16 So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward God and toward men. |
| 17 Ora, in capo di molti anni, io son venuto per far limosine, ed offerte alla mia nazione. | 17 Now after some years I came to bring to my nation alms and offerings. |
| 18 Le quali facendo, alcuni Giudei dell’Asia mi hanno trovato purificato nel tempio, senza turba, e senza tumulto. | 18 As I was doing this, they found me purified in the temple, without any crowd or tumult. But some Jews from Asia-- |
| 19 A loro conveniva di comparire davanti a te, e d’accusarmi, se aveano cosa alcuna contro a me. | 19 they ought to be here before you and to make an accusation, if they have anything against me. |
| 20 Ovvero, dicano questi stessi, se hanno trovato alcun misfatto in me, quando io mi son presentato davanti al concistoro. | 20 Or else let these men themselves say what wrongdoing they found when I stood before the council, |
| 21 Se non è di questa sola parola, che io gridai, essendo in piè fra loro: Io sono oggi giudicato da voi intorno alla risurrezione de’ morti | 21 except this one thing which I cried out while standing among them, 'With respect to the resurrection of the dead I am on trial before you this day.'" |
| 22 Or Felice, udite queste cose, li rimise ad un altro tempo, dicendo: Dopo che io sarò più appieno informato di questa professione, quando il capitano Lisia sarà venuto, io prenderò conoscenza dei fatti vostri. | 22 But Felix, having a rather accurate knowledge of the Way, put them off, saying, "When Lysias the tribune comes down, I will decide your case." |
| 23 E ordinò al centurione che Paolo fosse guardato, ma che fosse largheggiato, e ch’egli non divietasse ad alcun de’ suoi di servirlo, o di venire a lui. | 23 Then he gave orders to the centurion that he should be kept in custody but should have some liberty, and that none of his friends should be prevented from attending to his needs. |
| 24 Or alcuni giorni appresso, Felice, venuto con Drusilla, sua moglie, la quale era Giudea, mandò a chiamar Paolo, e l’ascoltò intorno alla fede in Cristo Gesù. | 24 After some days Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess; and he sent for Paul and heard him speak upon faith in Christ Jesus. |
| 25 E, ragionando egli della giustizia, e della temperanza, e del giudizio a venire, Felice, tutto spaventato, rispose: Al presente vattene; ma un’altra volta, quando io avrò opportunità, io ti manderò a chiamare. | 25 And as he argued about justice and self-control and future judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, "Go away for the present; when I have an opportunity I will summon you." |
| 26 Sperando insieme ancora che gli sarebber dati danari da Paolo, acciocchè lo liberasse; per la qual cosa ancora, mandandolo spesso a chiamare, ragionava con lui. | 26 At the same time he hoped that money would be given him by Paul. So he sent for him often and conversed with him. |
| 27 ORA, in capo di due anni, Felice ebbe per successore Porcio Festo; e Felice volendo far cosa grata ai Giudei, lasciò Paolo prigione | 27 But when two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus; and desiring to do the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul in prison. |
