EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 A la mañana siguiente, Ierubaal –es decir, Gedeón– se levantó de madrugada con la gente que lo acompañaba, y acamparon en En Jarod. Madián habías acampado más al norte, al pie de la colina de Moré, sobre el valle.	1 Early the next morning Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) encamped by Enharod with all his soldiers. The camp of Midian was in the valley north of Gibeath-hammoreh.
2 Entonces el Señor dijo a Gedeón: «La gente que te acompaña es demasiado numerosa para que ponga a Madián en sus manos. No quiero que Israel se gloríe a expensas mías, diciendo: «Es mi mano la que me salvó».	2 The LORD said to Gideon, "You have too many soldiers with you for me to deliver Midian into their power, lest Israel vaunt itself against me and say, 'My own power brought me the victory.'
3 Por eso, proclama a oídos del pueblo: «El que tenga miedo o tiemble, que se vuelva». Así Gedeón los puso a prueba, y veintidós mil hombres se volvieron, quedando sólo diez mil.	3 Now proclaim to all the soldiers, 'If anyone is afraid or fearful, let him leave.'" When Gideon put them to this test on the mountain, twenty-two thousand of the soldiers left, but ten thousand remained.
4 Luego el Señor dijo a Gedeón: «Hay todavía demasiada gente; ordénales que bajen hasta el borde del agua, y allí te los pondré a prueba. Irán contigo solamente los que yo te indique; los otros no te acompañarán».	4 The LORD said to Gideon, "There are still too many soldiers. Lead them down to the water and I will test them for you there. If I tell you that a certain man is to go with you, he must go with you. But no one is to go if I tell you he must not."
5 Gedeón hizo que la gente bajara hasta el agua, y el Señor le dijo: «A todos los que beban con la lengua, como lamen los perros, los pondrás a un lado; y a todos los que se arrodillen para beber, los pondrás del otro».	5 When Gideon led the soldiers down to the water, the LORD said to him, "You shall set to one side everyone who laps up the water as a dog does with its tongue; to the other, everyone who kneels down to drink."
6 Los que lamieron el agua llevándosela a la boca, fueron trescientos; el resto de la tropa, en cambio, se arrodilló para beber.	6 Those who lapped up the water raised to their mouths by hand numbered three hundred, but all the rest of the soldiers knelt down to drink the water.
7 El Señor dijo a Gedeón: «Yo los voy a salvar con estos trescientos hombres y pondré a Madián en tus manos. Que el grueso de la tropa regrese cada uno a su casa».	7 The LORD said to Gideon, "By means of the three hundred who lapped up the water I will save you and will deliver Midian into your power. So let all the other soldiers go home."
8 Los trescientos hombres recogieron los cántaros de toda la tropa, y también sus trompetas, mientras Gedeón despedía a los otros israelitas, quedándose sólo con esos trescientos. El campamento de Madián estaba en el valle, debajo del suyo.	8 Their horns, and such supplies as the soldiers had with them, were taken up, and Gideon ordered the rest of the Israelites to their tents, but kept the three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.
9 Aquella noche, el Señor dijo a Gedeón: «Baja ahora mismo contra el campamento de Madián, porque lo he puesto en tus manos.	9 That night the LORD said to Gideon, "Go, descend on the camp, for I have delivered it up to you.
10 Si tienes miedo de atacar, baja tú primero con tu servidor Purá	10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your aide Purah.
11 y escucha lo que dicen. Así tendrás valor y atacarás el campamento». Gedeón bajó acompañado de Purá, su servidor, hasta el extremo del campamento, donde estaban los puestos de guardia.	11 When you hear what they are saying, you will have the courage to descend on the camp." So he went down with his aide Purah to the outposts of the camp.
12 Madián, Amalec y todos los Orientales que habían irrumpido en el valle eran numerosos como langostas, y sus camellos eran incontables, como la arena de la playa.	12 The Midianites, Amalekites, and all the Kedemites lay in the valley, as numerous as locusts. Nor could their camels be counted, for these were as many as the sands on the seashore.
13 Cuando llegó Gedeón, oyó que un hombre le estaba contando un sueño a su compañero. «Tuve un sueño, le decía; vi que una galleta de cebada venía rodando por el campamento de Madián. Al llegar a una carpa, chocó contra ella y la volteó, de manera que la carpa cayó por tierra».	13 When Gideon arrived, one man was telling another about a dream. "I had a dream," he said, "that a round loaf of barley bread was rolling into the camp of Midian. It came to our tent and struck it, and as it fell it turned the tent upside down."
14 Su compañero le respondió: «Esto no significa otra cosa que la espada de Gedeón, hijo de Joás, el hombre de Israel. Dios ha puesto en sus manos a Madián y todo su campamento».	14 "This can only be the sword of the Israelite Gideon, son of Joash," the other replied. "God has delivered Midian and all the camp into his power."
15 Cuando Gedeón oyó el relato del sueño y su interpretación, se postró para adorar. Luego regresó al campamento de Israel, y dijo: «¡Arriba! El Señor ha puesto en manos de ustedes el campamento de Madián».	15 When Gideon heard the description and explanation of the dream, he prostrated himself. Then returning to the camp of Israel, he said, "Arise, for the LORD has delivered the camp of Midian into your power."
16 Gedeón dividió a los trescientos hombres en tres cuerpos, y distribuyó entre ellos trompetas y cántaros vacíos, con antorchas dentro de los cántaros.	16 He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and provided them all with horns and with empty jars and torches inside the jars.
17 Después dijo: «Fíjense bien en lo que yo hago, y hagan ustedes lo mismo. Cuando llegue al extremo del campamento, hagan lo mismo que yo.	17 "Watch me and follow my lead," he told them. "I shall go to the edge of the camp, and as I do, you must do also.
18 Yo y todos mis compañeros tocaremos las trompetas; entonces también ustedes tocarán las trompetas alrededor del campamento y gritarán: ¡Por el Señor y por Gedeón!».	18 When I and those with me blow horns, you too must blow horns all around the camp and cry out, 'For the LORD and for Gideon!'"
19 Gedeón y los cien hombres que lo acompañaban llegaron al extremo del campamento al comienzo de la guardia de la medianoche. Cuando se acababa de hacer el relevo de los centinelas, ellos tocaron las trompetas y rompieron los cántaros que llevaban en la mano.	19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the posting of the guards. They blew the horns and broke the jars they were holding.
20 Los tres cuerpos de la tropa hicieron lo mismo. Tenían las antorchas en la mano izquierda, y con la derecha tocaban las trompetas. Y todos gritaban: «¡Por el Señor y por Gedeón!».	20 All three companies blew horns and broke their jars. They held the torches in their left hands, and in their right the horns they were blowing, and cried out, "A sword for the LORD and Gideon!"
21 Cada uno permanecía quieto en su respectivo lugar, alrededor del campamento. Entonces se despertó todo el campamento, y se dieron a la fuga lanzando alaridos.	21 They all remained standing in place around the camp, while the whole camp fell to running and shouting and fleeing.
22 Mientras los trescientos hombres tocaban las trompetas, el Señor hizo que en todo el campamento volvieran la espada unos contra otros. La tropa huyó hasta Bet Sitá, hacia Sartán, hasta la orilla de Abel Mejolá, frente a Tabat.	22 But the three hundred men kept blowing the horns, and throughout the camp the LORD set the sword of one against another. The army fled as far as Beth-shittah in the direction of Zarethan, near the border of Abel-meholah at Tabbath.
23 Entonces se reunieron los hombres de Israel, procedentes de Neftalí, de Aser y de Todo Manasés, y persiguieron a Madián.	23 The Israelites were called to arms from Naphtali, from Asher, and from all Manasseh, and they pursued Midian.
24 Gedeón envió mensajeros por toda la montaña de Efraím, para que dijeran: «Bajen al encuentro de Madián y ocupen antes que ellos los vados hasta Bet Bará y el Jordán». Los hombres de Efraím se reunieron y ocuparon los vados hasta Bet Bará y el Jordán.	24 Gideon also sent messengers throughout the mountain region of Ephraim to say, "Go down to confront Midian, and seize the water courses against them as far as Beth-barah, as well as the Jordan." So all the Ephraimites were called to arms, and they seized the water courses as far as Beth-barah, and the Jordan as well.
25 Así tomaron prisioneros a los dos jefes madianitas, Oreb y Zeeb. Luego de perseguir a Madián, presentaron a Gedeón, que estaba al otro lado del Jordán, las cabezas de Oreb y Zeeb.	25 They captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, killing Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the wine press of Zeeb. Then they pursued Midian and carried the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.
