EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 A la mañana siguiente, Ierubaal –es decir, Gedeón– se levantó de madrugada con la gente que lo acompañaba, y acamparon en En Jarod. Madián habías acampado más al norte, al pie de la colina de Moré, sobre el valle.	1 Then Jerobaal, who is the same as Gedeon, rising up early and all the people with him, came to the fountain that is called Harad. Now the camp of Madian was in the valley on the north side of the high hill.
2 Entonces el Señor dijo a Gedeón: «La gente que te acompaña es demasiado numerosa para que ponga a Madián en sus manos. No quiero que Israel se gloríe a expensas mías, diciendo: «Es mi mano la que me salvó».	2 And the Lord said to Gedeon: The people that are with thee are many, and Madian shall not be delivered into their hands: lest Israel should glory against me, and say: I was delivered by my own strength.
3 Por eso, proclama a oídos del pueblo: «El que tenga miedo o tiemble, que se vuelva». Así Gedeón los puso a prueba, y veintidós mil hombres se volvieron, quedando sólo diez mil.	3 Speak to the people, and proclaim in the hearing of all, I Whosoever is fearful and timorous, let him return. So two and twenty thousand men went away from mount Galaad and returned home, and only ten thousand remained.
4 Luego el Señor dijo a Gedeón: «Hay todavía demasiada gente; ordénales que bajen hasta el borde del agua, y allí te los pondré a prueba. Irán contigo solamente los que yo te indique; los otros no te acompañarán».	4 And the Lord said to Gedeon: The people are still too many, bring them to the waters, and there I will try them: and of whom I shall say to thee, This shall go with thee, let him go: whom I shall forbid to go, let him return.
5 Gedeón hizo que la gente bajara hasta el agua, y el Señor le dijo: «A todos los que beban con la lengua, como lamen los perros, los pondrás a un lado; y a todos los que se arrodillen para beber, los pondrás del otro».	5 And when the people were come down to the waters, the Lord said to Gedeon: They that shall lap the water with their tongues, as dogs are wont to lap, thou shalt set apart by themselves: but they that shall drink bowing down their knees, shall be on the other side.
6 Los que lamieron el agua llevándosela a la boca, fueron trescientos; el resto de la tropa, en cambio, se arrodilló para beber.	6 And the number of them that had lapped water, casting it with the hand to their mouth, was three hundred men: and all the rest of the multitude had drunk kneeling.
7 El Señor dijo a Gedeón: «Yo los voy a salvar con estos trescientos hombres y pondré a Madián en tus manos. Que el grueso de la tropa regrese cada uno a su casa».	7 And the Lord said to Gedeon: By the three hundred men, that lapped water, I will save you, and deliver Madian into thy hand: but let all the rest of the people return to their place.
8 Los trescientos hombres recogieron los cántaros de toda la tropa, y también sus trompetas, mientras Gedeón despedía a los otros israelitas, quedándose sólo con esos trescientos. El campamento de Madián estaba en el valle, debajo del suyo.	8 So taking victuals and trumpets according to their number, he ordered all the rest of the multitude to depart to their tents: and he with the three hundred gave himself to the battle. Now the camp of Madian was beneath him in the valley.
9 Aquella noche, el Señor dijo a Gedeón: «Baja ahora mismo contra el campamento de Madián, porque lo he puesto en tus manos.	9 The same night the Lord said to him: Arise, and go down into the camp: because I have delivered them into thy hand.
10 Si tienes miedo de atacar, baja tú primero con tu servidor Purá	10 But if thou be afraid to go alone, let Phara thy servant go down with thee.
11 y escucha lo que dicen. Así tendrás valor y atacarás el campamento». Gedeón bajó acompañado de Purá, su servidor, hasta el extremo del campamento, donde estaban los puestos de guardia.	11 And when thou shalt hear what they are saying, then shall thy hands be strengthened, and thou shalt go down more secure to the enemies' camp. And he went down with Phara his servant into part of the camp, where was the watch of men in arms.
12 Madián, Amalec y todos los Orientales que habían irrumpido en el valle eran numerosos como langostas, y sus camellos eran incontables, como la arena de la playa.	12 But Madian and Amalec, and all the eastern people lay scattered in the valley, as a multitude of locusts: their camels also were innumerable as the sand that lieth on the sea shore.
13 Cuando llegó Gedeón, oyó que un hombre le estaba contando un sueño a su compañero. «Tuve un sueño, le decía; vi que una galleta de cebada venía rodando por el campamento de Madián. Al llegar a una carpa, chocó contra ella y la volteó, de manera que la carpa cayó por tierra».	13 And when Gedeon was come, one told his neighbour a dream: and in this manner related what he had seen: I dreamt a dream, and it seemed to me as if a hearth cake of barley bread rolled and came down into the camp of Madian: and when it was come to a tent it struck it, and beat it down flat to the ground.
14 Su compañero le respondió: «Esto no significa otra cosa que la espada de Gedeón, hijo de Joás, el hombre de Israel. Dios ha puesto en sus manos a Madián y todo su campamento».	14 He to whom he spoke, answered: This is nothing else but the sword of Gedeon the son of Joas a man of Israel. For the Lord hath delivered Madian, and all their camp into his hand.
15 Cuando Gedeón oyó el relato del sueño y su interpretación, se postró para adorar. Luego regresó al campamento de Israel, y dijo: «¡Arriba! El Señor ha puesto en manos de ustedes el campamento de Madián».	15 And when Gedeon had heard the dream, and the interpretation thereof, he adored: and returned to the camp of Israel, and said: Arise, for the Lord hath delivered the camp of Madian into our hands.
16 Gedeón dividió a los trescientos hombres en tres cuerpos, y distribuyó entre ellos trompetas y cántaros vacíos, con antorchas dentro de los cántaros.	16 And he divided the three hundred men into three parts, and gave them trumpets in their hands, and empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.
17 Después dijo: «Fíjense bien en lo que yo hago, y hagan ustedes lo mismo. Cuando llegue al extremo del campamento, hagan lo mismo que yo.	17 And he said to them: What you shall see me do, do you the same: I will go into one part of the camp, and do you as I shall do.
18 Yo y todos mis compañeros tocaremos las trompetas; entonces también ustedes tocarán las trompetas alrededor del campamento y gritarán: ¡Por el Señor y por Gedeón!».	18 When the trumpet shall sound in my hand, do you also blow the trumpets on every side of the camp.
19 Gedeón y los cien hombres que lo acompañaban llegaron al extremo del campamento al comienzo de la guardia de la medianoche. Cuando se acababa de hacer el relevo de los centinelas, ellos tocaron las trompetas y rompieron los cántaros que llevaban en la mano.	19 And Gedeon, and the three hundred men that were with him, went into part of the camp, at the beginning of the midnight watch, and the watchmen being alarmed, they began to sound their trumpets, and to clap the pitchers one against another.
20 Los tres cuerpos de la tropa hicieron lo mismo. Tenían las antorchas en la mano izquierda, y con la derecha tocaban las trompetas. Y todos gritaban: «¡Por el Señor y por Gedeón!».	20 And when they sounded their trumpets in three places round about the camp, and had broken their pitchers, they held their lamps in their left hands, and with their right hands the trumpets which they blew, and they cried out: The sword of the Lord and of Gedeon;
21 Cada uno permanecía quieto en su respectivo lugar, alrededor del campamento. Entonces se despertó todo el campamento, y se dieron a la fuga lanzando alaridos.	21 Standing every man in his place round about the enemies' camp. So all the camp was troubled, and crying out and howling they fled away.
22 Mientras los trescientos hombres tocaban las trompetas, el Señor hizo que en todo el campamento volvieran la espada unos contra otros. La tropa huyó hasta Bet Sitá, hacia Sartán, hasta la orilla de Abel Mejolá, frente a Tabat.	22 And the three hundred men nevertheless persisted sounding the trumpets. And the Lord sent the sword into all the camp, and they killed one another,
23 Entonces se reunieron los hombres de Israel, procedentes de Neftalí, de Aser y de Todo Manasés, y persiguieron a Madián.	23 Fleeing as far as Bethsetta, and the border of Abelmahula in Tebbath. But the men of Israel shouting from Nephtali and Aser, and from all Manasses pursued after Madian.
24 Gedeón envió mensajeros por toda la montaña de Efraím, para que dijeran: «Bajen al encuentro de Madián y ocupen antes que ellos los vados hasta Bet Bará y el Jordán». Los hombres de Efraím se reunieron y ocuparon los vados hasta Bet Bará y el Jordán.	24 And Gedeon sent messengers into all mount Ephraim, saying: Come down to meet Madian, and take the waters before them to Bethbera and the Jordan. And all Ephraim shouted, and took the waters before them and the Jordan as far as Bethbera.
25 Así tomaron prisioneros a los dos jefes madianitas, Oreb y Zeeb. Luego de perseguir a Madián, presentaron a Gedeón, que estaba al otro lado del Jordán, las cabezas de Oreb y Zeeb.	25 And having taken two men of Madian, Oreb and Zeb: Oreb they slew in the rock of Oreb, and Zeb in the winepress of Zeb. And they pursued Madian, carrying the heads of Oreb and Zeb to Gedeon beyond the waters of the Jordan.
