| 2 En tiempos de Salmanasar, rey de Asiria, Tobit fue deportado de Tisbé, que está al sur de Cades de Neftalí, en la Alta Galilea, más arriba de Hasor, hacia el oeste, y al norte de Sefet. | 2 who in the days of Shalmaneser, king of the Assyrians, was taken into captivity from Thisbe, which is to the south of Kedesh Naphtali in Galilee above Asher. |
| 3 Yo, Tobit, seguí los caminos de la verdad y de la justicia todos los días de mi vida. Hice muchas limosnas a mis hermanos y a mis compatriotas deportados conmigo a Nínive, en el país de los Asirios. | 3 I, Tobit, walked in the ways of truth and righteousness all the days of my life, and I performed many acts of charity to my brethren and countrymen who went with me into the land of the Assyrians, to Nineveh. |
| 4 Cuando yo era joven y vivía en mi país, en la tierra de Israel, toda la tribu de mi antepasado Neftalí se había separado de la casa de David y de Jerusalén, la ciudad elegida entre todas las tribus de Israel para ofrecer sacrificios, donde se había edificado y consagrado para todas las generaciones futuras el Templo en el que habita Dios. | 4 Now when I was in my own country, in the land of Israel, while I was still a young man, the whole tribe of Naphtali my forefather deserted the house of Jerusalem. This was the place which had been chosen from among all the tribes of Israel, where all the tribes should sacrifice and where the temple of the dwelling of the Most High was consecrated and established for all generations for ever. |
| 5 Todos mis hermanos y la familia de Neftalí, ofrecían sacrificio sobre todas las montañas de Galilea al ternero que Jeroboam, rey de Israel, había hecho en Dan. | 5 All the tribes that joined in apostasy used to sacrifice to the calf Baal, and so did the house of Naphtali my forefather. |
| 6 Muchas veces yo era el único que iba en peregrinación a Jerusalén, conforme a la prescripción que obliga para siempre a todo Israel. Me apresuraba a llevar a Jerusalén las primicias de los frutos y de los animales, el diezmo del ganado y las primicias de la esquila de las ovejas. | 6 But I alone went often to Jerusalem for the feasts, as it is ordained for all Israel by an everlasting decree. Taking the first fruits and the tithes of my produce and the first shearings, I would give these to the priests, the sons of Aaron, at the altar. |
| 7 Entregaba todo eso a los sacerdotes, hijos de Aarón, para los sacrificios del altar. A los levitas que cumplían sus funciones en Jerusalén, les entregaba el diezmo del vino y del trigo, del olivo, de las granadas y de los otros frutos. Cambiaba por dinero el segundo diezmo e iba a gastarlo cada año a Jerusalén. | 7 Of all my produce I would give a tenth to the sons of Levi who ministered at Jerusalem; a second tenth I would sell, and I would go and spend the proceeds each year at Jerusalem; |
| 8 El tercer diezmo lo daba a los huérfanos, a las viudas y a los prosélitos que vivían con los israelitas: lo repartía cada tres años, y los comíamos, siguiendo las prescripciones de la Ley de Moisés y las instrucciones de Débora, madre de nuestro antepasado Ananiel, porque mi padre había muerto, dejándome huérfano. | 8 the third tenth I would give to those to whom it was my duty, as Deborah my father's mother had commanded me, for I was left an orphan by my father. |
| 9 Cuando me hice hombre, me casé con una mujer de la descendencia de nuestros padres que se llamaba Ana, y de ella tuve un hijo, al que llamé Tobías. | 9 When I became a man I married Anna, a member of our family, and by her I became the father of Tobias. |
| 10 Después que me deportaron a Asiria y fui llevado cautivo, llegué a Nínive. Todos mis hermanos y mis compatriotas comían los manjares de los paganos. | 10 Now when I was carried away captive to Nineveh, all my brethren and my relatives ate the food of the Gentiles; |
| 11 Pero yo me cuidaba muy bien de comer esos manjares. | 11 but I kept myself from eating it, |
| 12 Y como me acordaba de mi Dios de todo corazón, | 12 because I remembered God with all my heart. |
| 13 el Altísimo me concedió el favor de Salmanasar, y llegué a ser el encargado de sus compras. | 13 Then the Most High gave me favor and good appearance in the sight of Shalmaneser, and I was his buyer of provisions. |
| 14 Yo iba a Media y hacía las compras, hasta que él murió. En una ocasión, dejé en casa de Gabael, hermano de Gabrí, en el país de los Medos, unas bolsas con diez talentos de plata. | 14 So I used to go into Media, and once at Rages in Media I left ten talents of silver in trust with Gabael, the brother of Gabrias. |
| 15 Al morir Salmanasar, reinó en lugar de él su hijo Senaquerib. Entonces se interrumpieron las comunicaciones con Media, y ya no pude volver allí. | 15 But when Shalmaneser died, Sennacherib his son reigned in his place; and under him the highways were unsafe, so that I could no longer go into Media. |
| 16 En tiempos de Salmanasar, yo hacía muchas limosnas a mis compatriotas, | 16 In the days of Shalmaneser I performed many acts of charity to my brethren. |
| 17 Daba mi pan a los hambrientos, vestía a los que estaban desnudos y enterraba a mis compatriotas, cuando veía que sus cadáveres eran arrojados por encima de las murallas de Nínive. | 17 I would give my bread to the hungry and my clothing to the naked; and if I saw any one of my people dead and thrown out behind the wall of Nineveh, I would bury him. |
| 18 También enterré a los que mandó matar Senaquerib cuando tuvo que huir de Judea, después del castigo que le infligió el Rey del Cielo por todas las blasfemias que había proferido. Lleno de cólera, Senaquerib mató a muchos israelitas: yo ocultaba sus cuerpos para enterrarlos, y aunque él los buscaba, no podía encontrarlos. | 18 And if Sennacherib the king put to death any who came fleeing from Judea, I buried them secretly. For in his anger he put many to death. When the bodies were sought by the king, they were not found. |
| 19 Un ninivita informó al rey que era yo el que los enterraba clandestinamente. Cuando supe que el rey estaba informado de eso y que me buscaba para matarme, tuve miedo y me escapé. | 19 Then one of the men of Nineveh went and informed the king about me, that I was burying them; so I hid myself. When I learned that I was being searched for, to be put to death, I left home in fear. |
| 20 Todos mis bienes fueron embargados y confiscados para el tesoro real: no me quedó nada, excepto mi esposa Ana y mi hijo Tobías. | 20 Then all my property was confiscated and nothing was left to me except my wife Anna and my son Tobias. |
| 21 Pero antes de cuarenta días, el rey fue asesinado por sus dos hijos, que luego huyeron a los montes de Ararat. Su hijo Asaradón, reinó en lugar de él y confió a Ajicar, hijo de mi hermano Anael, la contabilidad y la administración general del reino. | 21 But not fifty days passed before two of Sennacherib's sons killed him, and they fled to the mountains of Ararat. Then Esarhaddon, his son, reigned in his place; and he appointed Ahikar, the son of my brother Anael, over all the accounts of his kingdom and over the entire administration. |
| 22 Entonces Ajicar intercedió por mí y pude volver a Nínive. Bajo el reinado de Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, él había sido copero mayor, guardasellos, administrador y contador, y Asaradón lo confirmó en esos cargos. El pertenecía a mi familia, era mi sobrino. | 22 Ahikar interceded for me, and I returned to Nineveh. Now Ahikar was cupbearer, keeper of the signet, and in charge of administration of the accounts, for Esarhaddon had appointed him second to himself. He was my nephew. |
