1 Hubo una larga guerra entre la casa de Saúl y la de David; y mientras la casa de David se iba fortaleciendo, la de Saúl se debilitaba cada vez más.	1 There followed a long war between the house of Saul and that of David, in which David grew stronger, but the house of Saul weaker.
2 David tuvo varios hijos en Hebrón. El mayor fue Amnón, hijo de Ajinóam de Izreel;	2 Sons were born to David in Hebron: his first-born, Amnon, of Ahinoam from Jezreel;
3 el segundo, Quilab, hijo de Abigail, la mujer de Nabal de Carmel; el tercero, Absalón, hijo de Maacá, la hija de Talmai, rey de Guesur;	3 the second, Chileab, of Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel; the third, Absalom, son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur;
4 el cuarto, Adonías, hijo de Jaguit; el quinto, Sefatías, hijo de Abital;	4 the fourth, Adonijah, son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah, son of Abital;
5 y el sexto, Itream, hijo de Eglá, esposa de David. Todos estos hijos le nacieron a David en Hebrón.	5 and the sixth, Ithream, of David's wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.
6 Mientras duraba la guerra entre la casa de Saúl y la de David, Abner afianzaba su posición en la casa de Saúl.	6 During the war between the house of Saul and that of David, Abner was gaining power in the house of Saul.
7 Saúl había tenido una concubina llamada Rispá, hija de Aiá. E Isbaal dijo a Abner: «¿Por qué te has unido a la concubina de mi padre?».	7 Now Saul had had a concubine, Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. And Ishbaal, son of Saul, said to Abner, "Why have you been intimate with my father's concubine?"
8 Abner se enfureció por las palabras de Isbaal y replicó: «¿Acaso yo soy un perro, de esos de Judá? Hasta hoy he procedido lealmente con la casa de tu padre Saúl, con sus hermanos y amigos, y no te dejé caer en manos de David. ¡Y ahora tú me recriminas a causa de esa mujer!	8 Enraged at the words of Ishbaal, Abner said, "Am I a dog's head in Judah? At present I am doing a kindness to the house of your father Saul, to his brothers and his friends, by keeping you out of David's clutches; yet this day you charge me with a crime involving a woman!
9 Que Dios me castigue una y otra vez, si no me comporto con David conforme al juramento que le hizo el Señor,	9 May God do thus and so to Abner if I do not carry out for David what the LORD swore to him--
10 de quitar la realeza a la casa de Saúl y establecer el trono de David sobre Israel y sobre Judá, desde Dan hasta Berseba».	10 that is, take away the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish the throne of David over Israel and over Judah from Dan to Beersheba."
11 Isbaal no fue capaz de responder a Abner ni una sola palabra, porque le tenía miedo.	11 In his fear of Abner, Ishbaal was no longer able to say a word to him.
12 Entonces Abner envió unos mensajeros, para que dijeran a David en nombre suyo: «¿De quién va a ser el país?». Y también: «Sella conmigo un pacto, y yo cooperaré contigo para que todo Israel se ponga de tu parte».	12 Then Abner sent messengers to David in Telam, where he was at the moment, to say, "Make an agreement with me, and I will aid you by bringing all Israel over to you."
13 David respondió: «Está bien, haré un pacto contigo. Pero sólo te pido una cosa: no te presentarás ante mí, si no me traes a Mical, la hija de Saúl, cuando vengas a verme».	13 He replied, "Very well, I will make an agreement with you. But one thing I require of you. You must not appear before me unless you bring back Michal, Saul's daughter, when you come to present yourself to me."
14 Además, David envió mensajeros a Isbaal, hijo de Saúl, para intimarle: «Devuélveme a Mical, mi mujer, a la que yo adquirí por cien prepucios de filisteos».	14 At the same time David sent messengers to Ishbaal, son of Saul, to say, "Give me my wife Michal, whom I espoused by paying a hundred Philistine foreskins."
15 Entonces Isbaal mandó que se la sacaran a su marido Paltiel, hijo de Lais.	15 Ishbaal sent for her and took her away from her husband Paltiel, son of Laish,
16 Su marido la acompañó y fue llorando detrás de ella hasta Bajurím. Pero Abner le dijo: «¡Vamos, vuélvete!». Y él se volvió.	16 who followed her weeping as far as Bahurim. But Abner said to him, "Go back!" And he turned back.
17 Mientras tanto, Abner se había entrevistado con los ancianos de Israel, diciendo: «Ya hace tiempo que ustedes quieren a David como rey.	17 Abner then said in discussion with the elders of Israel: "For a long time you have been seeking David as your king.
18 Actúen ahora mismo, porque el Señor le ha dicho: «Por medio de David salvaré a mi pueblo Israel del poder de los filisteos y del poder de todos sus enemigos».	18 Now take action, for the LORD has said of David, 'By my servant David I will save my people Israel from the grasp of the Philistines and from the grasp of all their enemies.'"
19 Abner habló también a los hombres de Benjamín, y luego fue a comunicarle personalmente a David, en Hebrón, lo que habían acordado Israel y toda la casa de Benjamín.	19 Abner also spoke personally to Benjamin, and then went to make his own report to David in Hebron concerning all that would be agreeable to Israel and to the whole house of Benjamin.
20 Abner, acompañado de veinte hombres, se presentó a David en Hebrón, y este les ofreció un banquete.	20 When Abner, accompanied by twenty men, came to David in Hebron, David prepared a feast for Abner and for the men who were with him.
21 Abner dijo a David: «Ahora mismo iré a reunir a todo Israel ante el rey, mi señor. Ellos harán un pacto contigo, y tú reinarás conforme a tus deseos». David despidió a Abner, y él se fue en paz.	21 Then Abner said to David, "I will now go to assemble all Israel for my lord the king, that they may make an agreement with you; you will then be king over all whom you wish to rule." So David bade Abner farewell, and he went away in peace.
22 Poco después, los servidores de David llegaron con Joab de una incursión, trayendo un gran botín. Abner ya no estaba con David en Hebrón, porque este lo había despedido y él se había ido en paz.	22 Just then David's servants and Joab were coming in from an expedition, bringing much plunder with them. Abner, having been dismissed by David, was no longer with him in Hebron but had gone his way in peace.
23 Apenas llegó Joab con toda la tropa que lo acompañaba, fueron a decirle: «Abner, hijo de Ner, vino a ver al rey y este lo dejó partir en paz».	23 When Joab and the whole force he had with him arrived, he was informed, "Abner, son of Ner, came to David; he has been sent on his way in peace."
24 Entonces Joab se presentó al rey y le dijo: «¿Qué has hecho? Ahora que Abner ha venido a verte, ¿por qué lo has dejado irse tranquilamente?	24 So Joab went to the king and said: "What have you done? Abner came to you. Why did you let him go peacefully on his way?
25 Tú sabes bien quién es Abner, hijo de Ner. El ha venido a engañarte, para enterarse de tus movimientos y saber todo lo que haces».	25 Are you not aware that Abner came to deceive you and to learn the ins and outs of all that you are doing?"
26 Joab salió de la presencia de David y envió detrás de Abner unos mensajeros, que lo hicieron volver desde la cisterna de Sirá, sin que David supiera nada.	26 Joab then left David, and without David's knowledge sent messengers after Abner, who brought him back from the cistern of Sirah.
27 Cuando Abner estuvo de vuelta en Hebrón, Joab lo llevó aparte a un lado de la entrada, como para hablar con él en privado, y allí lo hirió mortalmente en el bajo vientre, a causa de la sangre de su hermano Asael.	27 When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside within the city gate as though to speak with him privately. There he stabbed him in the abdomen, and he died in revenge for the killing of Joab's brother Asahel.
28 David se enteró en seguida de lo sucedido y exclamó: «Yo y mi reino somos inocentes para siempre, delante del Señor, de la sangre de Abner, hijo de Ner.	28 Later David heard of it and said: "Before the LORD; I and my kingdom are forever innocent.
29 ¡Que ella recaiga sobre Joab y sobre toda la casa de su padre! ¡Que nunca falten en la casa de Joab quienes padezcan de blenorrea y de lepra, ni afeminados, ni muertos por la espada, ni hambrientos!».	29 May the full responsibility for the death of Abner, son of Ner, be laid to Joab and to all his family. May the men of Joab's family never be without one suffering from a discharge, or a leper, or one unmanly, one falling by the sword, or one in need of bread!"
30 Joab y su hermano Abisai dieron muerte a Abner, porque él les había matado a su hermano Asael, en Gabaón, durante un combate.	30 (Joab and his brother Abishai had lain in wait for Abner because he killed their brother Asahel in battle at Gibeon.)
31 Luego David dijo a Joab y a todo el pueblo que estaba con él: «Rasguen sus vestiduras, vístanse de luto y laméntense por Abner». Y el rey David iba caminando detrás del féretro,	31 Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, "Rend your garments, gird yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn over Abner." King David himself followed the bier.
32 cuando sepultaron a Abner en Hebrón. El rey prorrumpió en sollozos ante la tumba de Abner, y todo el pueblo se puso a llorar.	32 When they had buried Abner in Hebron, the king wept aloud at the grave of Abner, and the people also wept.
33 Entonces el rey entonó este canto fúnebre por Abner: «¿Tenía que morir Abner como muere un insensato?	33 And the king sang this elegy over Abner: "Would Abner have died like a fool?
34 Tus manos no estaban atadas ni tus pies sujetos con grillos. ¡Has caído como quien cae víctima de malhechores!». Y todos siguieron llorando por él.	34 Your hands were not bound with chains, nor your feet placed in fetters; As men fall before the wicked, you fell." And all the people continued to weep for him.
35 Todo el pueblo trató de obligar a David a que comiera algo cuando aún era de día, pero David pronunció este juramento: «¡Que Dios me castigue una y otra vez, si llego a probar pan o cualquier otro bocado antes de la puesta del sol!».	35 Then they went to console David with food while it was still day. But David swore, "May God do thus and so to me if I eat bread or anything else before sunset."
36 Y todo el pueblo, al tener conocimiento de esto, lo aprobó, al tener conocimiento de esto, lo aprobó, como aprobaba todo lo que hacía el rey.	36 All the people noted this with approval, just as they were pleased with everything that the king did.
37 Así el pueblo y todo Israel se convencieron aquel día de que el rey no había intervenido en el asesinato de Abner, hijo de Ner.	37 So on that day all the people and all Israel came to know that the king had no part in the killing of Abner, son of Ner.
38 Luego el rey dijo a sus servidores: «¡Sepan que hoy ha caído en Israel un jefe, un gran hombre!	38 The king then said to his servants: "You must recognize that a great general has fallen today in Israel.
39 A pesar de mi unción real, hoy yo me siento desvalido, mientras que estos, los hijos de Seruiá, son más duros que yo. ¡Que el Señor le dé su merecido al que ha hecho el mal!».	39 Although I am the anointed king, I am weak this day, and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too ruthless for me. May the LORD requite the evildoer in accordance with his evil deed."
