1 Questo parlò Iddio a Moisè ne' campestri di Moab, sopra il Giordano, dirincontro a Gerico:	1 The LORD gave these instructions to Moses on the plains of Moab beside the Jericho stretch of the Jordan:
2 Comanda ai figliuoli d'Israel, che diano ai Levitici, delle loro possessioni,	2 "Tell the Israelites that out of their hereditary property they shall give the Levites cities for homes, as well as pasture lands around the cities.
3 terre dov'egli abitino, e del terreno di fuori per lo circuito in quantità, acciò che loro stiano nelle terre, e che le loro pecore e giumente possano istare	3 The cities shall serve them to dwell in, and the pasture lands shall serve their herds and flocks and other animals.
4 (e pascere) di fuori delle mura intorno, che tengano per spazio di mille passi;	4 The pasture lands of the cities to be assigned the Levites shall extend a thousand cubits from the city walls in each direction.
5 contro all'oriente due milia gobiti, e verso il mezzo giorno due milia gobiti; al mare, che raguarda l'occidente, anco due milia; dalla parte di settentrione anche due milia; le terre saranno di mezzo, e di fuori le ville.	5 Thus you shall measure out two thousand cubits outside the city along each side-east, south, west and north-with the city lying in the center. This shall serve them as the pasture lands of their cities.
6 Delle terre che darete a' Levitici, sei ne saranno separate (libere) per rifugio de fuggitivi, acciò che fuggano ad esse coloro che facessero isparsione di sangue; e oltra queste, altre quarantadue;	6 "Now these are the cities you shall give to the Levites: the six cities of asylum which you must establish as places where a homicide can take refuge, and in addition forty-two other cities--
7 cioè insieme quarantotto, colle sue ville.	7 a total of forty-eight cities with their pasture lands to be assigned the Levites.
8 Queste terre, che si daranno delle possessioni de' figliuoli d'Israel, si farà che chi più n'ha, più ne darà, e chi meno ha, meno darà: ogni uomo, secondo la sua quantità, daranno della sua eredità le terre a' Levitici.	8 In assigning the cities from the property of the Israelites, take more from a larger group and fewer from a smaller one, so that each group will cede cities to the Levites in proportion to its own heritage."
9 Parlò Iddio a Moisè, dicendo:	9 The LORD said to Moses,
10 Parla ai figliuoli di Israel, e di' a loro: quando voi averete passato il Giordano nella terra di Canaan,	10 "Tell the Israelites: When you go across the Jordan into the land of Canaan,
11 discernete quali terre debbono essere per securità de' fuggitivi, i quali non vogliendo faces sero isparsione di sangue;	11 select for yourselves cities to serve as cities of asylum, where a homicide who has killed someone unintentionally may take refuge.
12 nelle quali, quando vi sarà fuggito, (sarà libero; sicchè) il cognato dell' ucciso nol potrà uccidere, insino a tanto che starà nel cospetto della moltitudine, e la sua cagione si giudichi.	12 These cities shall serve you as places of asylum from the avenger of blood, so that a homicide shall not be put to death unless he is first tried before the community.
13 Di quelle terre (libere), le quali sono separate per rifugio de' fuggitivi,	13 Six cities of asylum shall you assign:
14 tre ne saranno di là dal Giordano, e tre di quà nella terra di Canaan.	14 three beyond the Jordan, and three in the land of Canaan.
15 E così saranno per li forestieri, come per li terrazzani, acciò che fuggino in esse,	15 These six cities of asylum shall serve not only the Israelites but all the resident or transient aliens among them, so that anyone who has killed another unintentionally may take refuge there.
16 Chi sarà colui che percoterà con ferro, si che ne muoia il percosso, sarà omicidiale, e dee morire egli.	16 "If a man strikes another with an iron instrument and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.
17 E se gitterà pietra, (e percuoterà con essa), e il percosso muoia, similmente sia punito.	17 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing stone in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.
18 E se quello che è percosso con legno muoia, sarà giudicato come quello che sparge sangue.	18 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing club in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.
19 E il più propinquo del morto uccida colui che l'hae morto; e così tosto come l'avrà preso, ?uccida.	19 The avenger of blood may execute the murderer, putting him to death on sight.
20 E se, per odio, alcuno caccerà alcun altro con violenza, ovver getterà alcuna cosa contro per insidie,	20 "If a man pushes another out of hatred, or after lying in wait for him throws something at him, and causes his death,
21 ovver essendo inimico, lo percuoterà con mano, e quello muoia, colui che percuoterà sarà omicidiale; e lo cognato del morto lo potrà subito uccidere, dovunque lo trova.	21 or if he strikes another out of enmity and causes his death, he shall be put to death as a murderer. The avenger of blood may execute the murderer on sight.
22 E se fortuitamente, e senz' odio	22 "However, if a man pushes another accidentally and not out of enmity, or if without lying in wait for him he throws some object at him,
23 e inimicizia, di queste cose alcuna gli avvenisse;	23 or without seeing him throws a death-dealing stone which strikes him and causes his death, although he was not his enemy nor seeking to harm him:
24 e questo in presenza del popolo sia provato, e infra i più propingui parenti del percosso e del percotitore sia [ la questione del sangue] esaminata;	24 then the community, deciding the case between the slayer and the avenger of blood in accordance with these norms,
25 sarà liberato della percossione, e per sen tenza sarà rimenato nella terra d'onde avrà fuggito; ed ivi istarà, insino a tanto che il prete, ch' è unto d'olio santo, muoia.	25 shall free the homicide from the avenger of blood and shall remand him to the city of asylum where he took refuge; and he shall stay there until the death of the high priest who has been anointed with sacred oil.
26 E colui che uccide, se sarae trovato fuori di quelle terre che sono deputate per li sbanditi,	26 If the homicide of his own accord leaves the bounds of the city of asylum where he has taken refuge,
27 colui a cui cade di fare la vendetta, il puote uccidere; e sarà sanza pena;	27 and the avenger of blood finds him beyond these bounds and kills him, the avenger incurs no bloodguilt;
28 però che doveva, insino a tanto che il sacerdote fosse morto, stare nella città: poi che il sacerdote sarà morto, l'omicidiale torni alla sua terra.	28 the homicide was bound to stay in his city of asylum until the death of the high priest. Only after the death of the high priest may the homicide return to his own district.
29 E questa sì vi sarà legge sempiternale a tutti i vostri abitatori.	29 "These shall be norms for you and all your descendants, wherever you live, for rendering judgment.
30 L'omicidiale sarà punito, avendo testimonii; per uno testimonio non sia alcuno condennato.	30 "Whenever someone kills another, the evidence of witnesses is required for the execution of the murderer. The evidence of a single witness is not sufficient for putting a person to death.
31 Non farete ricomperare colui a cui è pro vata l'uccisione; ma incontanente sia morto.	31 "You shall not accept indemnity in place of the life of a murderer who deserves the death penalty; he must be put to death.
32 Gli sbanditi, insino a tanto che il sacerdote non è morto, non ritornino nella terra loro,	32 Nor shall you accept indemnity to allow a refugee to leave his city of asylum and again dwell elsewhere in the land before the death of the high priest.
33 acciò che voi non contaminate la terra della vostra abitazione, la quale si macula con lo sangue degl'innocenti; e altramente non si puote purgare se non per lo sangue di colui che ha sparso lo sangue d'altrui.	33 You shall not desecrate the land where you live. Since bloodshed desecrates the land, the land can have no atonement for the blood shed on it except through the blood of him who shed it.
34 E a questo modo sarà mondata la vostra possessione, abitando io con voi. Però che io son Iddio, il quale abito tra i figliuoli d'Israel.	34 Do not defile the land in which you live and in the midst of which I dwell; for I am the LORD who dwells in the midst of the Israelites."
