Iob 33

BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Adunque odi, Iob, le mie parole, e tutti li miei sermoni ascolta.	1 So, Job, please listen to my words and attend to al I have to say.
2 Ecco io apro la mia bocca; e favelli la mia lingua nelle mie mascelle.	2 Now as I open my mouth, and my tongue shapes words against my palate,
3 Collo mio semplice cuore le mie parole, e le mie labbra diranno la pura sentenza.	3 I shal utter words of wisdom from the heart, my lips will speak in all sincerity.
4 Lo Spirito di Dio (pure) fece me, e lo spiracolo dell' Onnipotente vivificò me.	4 God's was the spirit that made me, Shaddai's the breath that gave me life.
5 Se tu puoi, rispondi a me, e contrasta contro alla mia faccia.	5 Refute me, if you can. Prepare yourself, take up your position!
6 Ecco che me, sì come te, fece Iddio; e di quello medesimo fango certo io sono formato.	6 Look, I am your equal, not some god, like you I was moulded out of clay.
7 Ma impertanto lo mio miracolo non ti spaventi, e le mie parole non siano gravi a te.	7 No fear of me, therefore, need affright you, my hand wil not lie heavy over you.
8 Dicesti adunque nelle mie orecchie, e la voce delle tue parole io udi':	8 How could you say in my hearing -- for the sound of your words did not escape me-
9 Io sono mondo, senza peccato e senza macchia, e non è iniquitade in me.	9 'I am clean, and sinless, I am pure, without fault.
10 Perciò che ritrovò in me la lamentazione, però ha egli arbitrato me suo nemico.	10 But he keeps inventing excuses against me and regards me as his enemy.
11 Pose nel nervo li miei piedi, e guardò tutte le mie vie.	11 He puts me in the stocks, he watches my every path'?
12 Questa cosa è adunque, nella quale tu non se' giustificato; risponderò a te, perciò che maggiore è Iddio che l'uomo.	12 In saying so, I tel you, you are wrong: for God is greater than any human being.
13 Contro a lui contendi, ch' elli non abbia risposto a te ad ogni parola?	13 Why then quarrel with him for not replying to you, word for word?
14 Una volta favella Iddio, e la seconda volta quello medesimo non ridice.	14 God speaks first in one way, and then in another, although we do not realise it.
15 Per lo sogno, nella visione di notte, quando viene lo sonno sopra gli uomini, e dormono nel letto;	15 In dreams and in night-visions, when slumber has settled on humanity and people are asleep in bed,
16 allora apre le orecchie delli uomini, e ammaestrando loro insegna la disciplina,	16 he speaks in someone's ear, frightens him with apparitions
17 acciò ch' egli rivolga l' uomo di quelle cose ch' elli fa, e liberi lui dalla superbia;	17 to turn him from what he is doing and to put an end to his pride.
18 liberando l'anima sua da corruzione, e la vita sua, acciò ch' ella non passi nel coltello.	18 And thus he preserves his soul from the abyss, his life from passing down the Canal.
19 E certo ello riprende per dolore nel letto, e tutte le sue osse fae marcire.	19 Or again, he corrects by the sufferings of the sick-bed, when someone's bones tremble continuously
20 Egli è abbominevole nella vita sua lo pane, e all' anima sua lo cibo che dinanzi è da essere desiderato.	20 and the thought of food revolts him, however tasty it is,
21 Vengono meno le carni sue; e l'ossa, ch' erano coperte, fieno spogliate.	21 and his flesh rots away while you watch it and the bones beneath begin to show,
22 Approssimasi alla corruzione l'anima sua, e la vita sua alle cose mortifere.	22 and his soul is drawing nearer to the abyss and his life to the dwel ing of the dead.
23 Se sarà per lui l'angelo favellante una cosa di queste tali, acciò ch' elli anunzii la equità dell' uomo;	23 Then, if there is an Angel near him, a Mediator, one in a thousand, to remind him where his duty lies,
24 avrà misericordia di lui, e dirà: libera lui, acciò ch' elli non discenda nella corruzione; ho trovato in che io lo aiuterò.	24 to take pity on him and to say, 'Spare him from going down to the abyss: I have found the ransom forhis life,'
25 Consumata è la carne sua colli tormenti; ritorni a' di della sua giovinezza.	25 his flesh wil recover its childhood freshness, he wil return to the days of his youth.
26 Pregherà Iddio, e piacevole a lui sarae; vedrà la faccia sua in allegrezza, e renderà all' uomo la sua giustizia.	26 He wil pray to God who has restored him to favour, and wil come into his presence with joy. He wiltel others how he has received saving justice
27 Ragguarderà li uomini, e dirà: peccai, e veramente peccai; e sì come era degno, non ricevetti.	27 and sing this hymn before his companions, 'I sinned and left the path of right, but God has notpunished me as my sin deserved.
28 Liberò l'anima sua acciò ch' ella non andasse alla morte, ma vivente vedesse la luce.	28 He has spared my soul from going down to the abyss and is making my life see the light.'
29 Ecco, queste cose adopera Iddio tre volte per ciascuno,	29 All this is what God keeps doing again and yet again for human beings,
30 acciò ch' egli rivolga l'anima sua della corruzione, e allumini con la luce delli viventi.	30 to snatch souls back from the abyss and to make the light of the living stil shine.
31 Attendi, Iob, e odi me; e taci, insino ch' io favello.	31 Pay attention, Job, listen to me: keep quiet, I have more to say.
32 E se tu hai che favelli, rispondi a me; favella; certo io voglio che tu apparischi giusto.	32 If you have anything to say, refute me, speak out, for I would gladly accept that you are upright.
33 La quale cosa se non l' hai, odi me, e taci; e inseguerò a te la sapienza.	33 If not, then listen to me: keep quiet, and I wil teach you wisdom.
