BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ed ecco, ogni cosa vidde l'occhio mio, e udio l'orecchio mio, e intesi ogni cosa.	1 I have seen all this with my own eyes, heard with my own ears and understood.
2 Secondo la vostra scienza e io conobbi, e non sono da meno di voi.	2 Whatever you know, I know too; I am in no way inferior to you.
3 Ma pure all' Onnipotente favelleroe, e disputare con Dio desidero;	3 But my words are intended for Shaddai; I mean to remonstrate with God.
4 in prima mostrando che voi siete fabbricatori della bugia, e amatori delle perverse sentenze.	4 As for you, you are only charlatans, all worthless as doctors!
5 E Iddio il volesse, che voi foste taciuti, acciò che voi foste tenuti savii.	5 Wil no one teach you to be quiet -- the only wisdom that becomes you!
6 Adunque udite le mie correzioni, e al giudicio delli miei labbri intendete.	6 Kindly listen to my accusation and give your attention to the way I shall plead.
7 Or ha bisogno Iddio della vostra bugia, acciò che per lui favelliate inganno?	7 Do you mean to defend God by prevarication and by dishonest argument,
8 Or desiderate voi la faccia sua, e per Dio vi sforzate giudicare?	8 and, taking his side like this, appoint yourselves as his advocates?
9 Ovvero piacerà a lui, il quale celare niuna cosa puote? Ovvero sarae ingannato, sì come l'uomo, colle vostre fraudi?	9 How would you fare, if he were to scrutinise you? Can he be duped as mortals are duped?
10 Elli reprenderà voi, perciò che nascosamente la faccia sua ricevete.	10 He would inflict a harsh rebuke on you for your covert partiality.
11 Incontanente che si muoverà, turberà voi, e la paura sua rovinerae sopra voi.	11 Does his majesty not affright you? Does his terror not overcome you?
12 La vostra memoria s'assomiglierae alla cenere, e ritorneranno in luto li capi vostri.	12 Your received ideas are maxims of ash, your retorts, retorts of clay.
13 Tacete uno poco, acciò ch' io favelli qualunque cosa la mente rapporterà a me.	13 Be quiet! Kindly let me do the talking, happen to me what may.
14 Perchè lacero io le carni mie colli denti miei, e l'anima mia porto nelle mani mie?	14 I am putting my flesh between my teeth, I am taking my life in my hands;
15 Ancora s' elli ucciderà me, in lui spererò; ma pure le vie mie nel cospetto suo riprenderò.	15 let him kill me if he will; I have no other hope than to justify my conduct in his eyes.
16 Ed elli sarae lo mio Salvatore; e in veritade ogni ipocrita non verrà dinanzi a lui.	16 And this is what wil save me, for the wicked would not dare to appear before him.
17 Udite la parola mia, e li miei parlari oscuri ricevete colle orecchie vostre.	17 Listen careful y to my words, and pay attention to what I am going to say.
18 S' io sarò giudicato, so che giusto sarò trovato.	18 You see, I shal proceed by form of law, knowing that I am upright.
19 Chi è colui il quale sia giudicato meco? venga; perchè tacendo mi consumo (nella mente)?	19 Who wants to contest my case? In advance, I agree to be silenced and to die!
20 Due cose non mi fare, e allora della faccia tua non mi nasconderò.	20 Only grant me two concessions, and then I shal not hide away from your face:
21 La tua mano fa di lungi da me, e la paura tua non mi spaventi.	21 remove your hand, which lies so heavy on me, no longer make me cower from your terror.
22 E chiama me, e io risponderò a te; ovvero certo io favelleroe, e tu risponderai a me.	22 Then cal me forward and I shal answer, or rather, I shall speak and you wil answer.
23 Quante iniquitadi ho io e quanti peccati, le fellonie mie e peccati mostra a me.	23 How many faults and crimes have I committed? Tell me what my misdeed has been, what my sin?
24 Perchè nascondi tu la faccia tua, e pensi tu me esser tuo nemico?	24 Why do you hide your face and look on me as your enemy?
25 Contro la foglia, che si tolle dal vento, mostri la tua potenza; e la paglia secca persèguiti.	25 Do you want to intimidate a wind-blown leaf, do you want to pursue a dry straw?
26 Certo tu scrivi contro a me la amaritudine, e vogli consumare me per li peccati della mia fanciullezza.	26 You who lay bitter al egations against me and tax me with the faults of my youth
27 Tu ponesti nel nervo lo mio piede, e osservasti tutte le mie vie, e le vestigie de' miei piedi considerasti.	27 and have put my feet in the stocks; you examine my every step and measure my footprints one byone!
28 Il quale sono da essere consumato come puzza, e sì come vestimento mangiato dalla tignuola.	28 For his part, he crumbles away like rotten wood, or like a moth-eaten garment,
