1 But all men are vain, who are not under the knowledge of God, and who, from these good things that are seen, were not able to understand he who is, nor, by paying attention to the works, did they acknowledge he who was the artisan.	1 Tous les hommes en qui n'est pas la connaissance de Dieu sont vanité; et par les biens visibles ils n'ont pu comprendre Celui qui est, et ils n'ont pas reconnu le Créateur par la contemplation de Ses oeuvres;
2 Instead, they had considered either the fire, or the air, or the atmosphere, or the circle of stars, or the great sea, or the sun and moon, to be the gods that rule the world.	2 mais ils ont pensé que le feu, ou le vent, ou l'air subtil, ou le cercle des étoiles, ou l'abîme des eaux, ou le soleil et la lune, étaient les dieux qui gouvernent l'univers.
3 If they, being delighted by such sights, supposed them to be gods, let them know how great the Lord of them is in splendor. For he who created all things is the author of beauty.	3 S'ils les ont cru des dieux, parce qu'ils étaient ravis de leur beauté, qu'ils sachent combien leur Dominateur est encore plus beau; car c'est l'Auteur de la beauté qui a établi toutes ces choses.
4 Or, if they wondered at their power and their effects, let them understand by these things, that he who created them is mightier than they are.	4 S'ils ont admiré le pouvoir et les effets de ces créatures, qu'ils comprennent par là combien Celui qui les a créées est encore plus puissant;
5 For, by the greatness of the creation and its beauty, the creator of these will be able to be seen discernibly.	5 car par la grandeur et la beauté de la créature on peut connaître et voir le Créateur.
6 Yet, up to this point, the complaint about this is lesser. For perhaps they made a mistake in this, while desiring and seeking to find God.	6 Et cependant ces hommes méritent moins de reproches; car, s'ils tombent dans l'erreur, c'est peut-être en cherchant Dieu et en voulant Le trouver.
7 And, indeed, having some familiarity with him through his works, they search, and they are persuaded, because the things that they are seeing are good.	7 En effet, ils Le cherchent par l'examen de Ses oeuvres, et ils sont séduits par la beauté des choses qu'ils voient.
8 But, then again, neither can their debt be ignored.	8 Mais d'ailleurs ils ne méritent eux-mêmes aucun pardon.
9 For, if they were able to know enough so that they could value the universe, how is it they did not easily discover the Lord of it?	9 Car, s'ils ont eu assez de science pour apprécier l'univers, comment n'ont-ils pas plus facilement découvert Celui qui en est le maître?
10 Yet they are unhappy, and their hope is among the dead, for they have called ‘gods’ the works of the hands of men, gold and silver, the inventions of skill, and the likeness of animals, or a useless stone, the work of an ancient hand.	10 Mais ils sont bien malheureux, et n'ont d'espérance que parmi les morts, ceux qui ont donné le nom de dieux aux oeuvres de la main des hommes, à l'or, à l'argent, aux inventions de l'art, aux figures des animaux, et à une pierre inutile, travaillée par une main antique.
11 Or, it is as if a craftsman, a workman of the forest, had cut straight wood, and, with his expertise, shaved off all of its bark, and, with his skill, diligently fashioned a vessel, practical for use in life,	11 Voici qu'un ouvrier habile coupe dans la forêt un arbre bien droit; il en ôte adroitement toute l'écorce, et à l'aide de son art il en fabrique avec soin un meuble utile pour l'usage de la vie;
12 and even the remains of his work were exhausted in the preparation of food;	12 ce qui reste après son travail, il l'emploie pour préparer ses aliments;
13 and, from the remainder of this, which has become useful for nothing, a curved piece of wood and full of knots, he diligently carves it in his spare time, and, through the knowledge of his art, forms it and makes it in the image of a man,	13 quant aux derniers éclats, dont il ne peut faire aucun usage, bois tordu et plein de noeuds, il le travaille avec soin dans ses loisirs, il lui donne une figure par la science de son art, et il le fait ressembler à un homme,
14 or something comparable to an animal, thoroughly rubbing it with red ochre, to make it red with the color of the pigment, and to cover every imperfection which is in it;	14 ou bien il en fait l'image de quelque animal; il le frotte avec du vermillon, le revêt de couleur rouge, et recouvre toutes les taches qui s'y trouvent;
15 and it is as if he made a fitting resting place for it, even setting it in a wall and fastening it with iron,	15 puis il lui prépare une habitation convenable, le place dans une muraille, et l'assujettit avec du fer,
16 providing for it, lest it should fall, knowing that it is unable to help itself, for it is an image and it is in need of help.	16 de peur qu'il ne tombe; et il use de cette précaution, sachant que le dieu ne peut s'aider lui-même, car ce n'est qu'une statue, qui a besoin d'un secours étranger.
17 And then, making an offering, he inquires about his wealth, and about his sons, and about marriage. And he is not ashamed to talk to that which has no soul.	17 Il lui fait ensuite des voeux et il l'implore au sujet de ses biens, de ses enfants, ou d'un mariage. Il ne rougit pas de parler à un bois sans âme;
18 And for health, indeed, something unhealthy is being prayed to, and for life, he petitions what is dead, and for help, he calls upon something helpless,	18 il prie pour sa santé celui qui n'est que faiblesse; il demande la vie à un mort, et il appelle à son secours un être inutile;
19 and for a good journey, he entreats that which is unable to walk, and for acquiring, and for working, and for success in all things, he entreats that which is useless in all things.	19 il s'adresse pour son voyage à celui qui ne peut marcher; et pour ses achats, ses entreprises et tout ce qui le concerne, il implore celui qui est incapable de tout.
