Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God for the promise of life in Christ Jesus,1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus,
to Timothy, my dear child: grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.2 To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
I am grateful to God, whom I worship with a clear conscienceas my ancestors did, as I remember you constantly in my prayers, night and day.3 I thank God whom I serve with a clear conscience, as did my fathers, when I remember you constantly in my prayers.
I yearn to see you again, recalling your tears, so that I may be filled with joy,4 As I remember your tears, I long night and day to see you, that I may be filled with joy.
as I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and that I am confident lives also in you.5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you.
For this reason, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands.6 Hence I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands;
For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.7 for God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-control.
So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God.8 Do not be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel in the power of God,
He saved us and called us to a holy life, not according to our works but according to his own design and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before time began,9 who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not in virtue of our works but in virtue of his own purpose and the grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus ages ago,
but now made manifest through the appearance of our savior Christ Jesus, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,10 and now has manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
for which I was appointed preacher and apostle and teacher.11 For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher,
On this account I am suffering these things; but I am not ashamed, for I know him in whom I have believed and am confident that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day.12 and therefore I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me.
Take as your norm the sound words that you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.13 Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus;
Guard this rich trust with the help of the holy Spirit that dwells within us.14 guard the truth that has been entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.
You know that everyone in Asia deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.15 You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, and among them Phygelus and Hermogenes.
May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus because he often gave me new heart and was not ashamed of my chains.16 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me; he was not ashamed of my chains,
But when he came to Rome, he promptly searched for me and found me.17 but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me eagerly and found me--
May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day. And you know very well the services he rendered in Ephesus.18 may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day--and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus.
