1 Jerikó ekkor Izrael fiaitól való félelmében már bezárkózott és megerősítette magát, úgyhogy senki sem mehetett se ki, se be.	1 Now Jericho was shut up from within and from without because of the people of Israel; none went out, and none came in.
2 Azt mondta ekkor az Úr Józsuénak: »Kezedbe adtam Jerikót és királyát, s minden erős férfiát.	2 And the LORD said to Joshua, "See, I have given into your hand Jericho, with its king and mighty men of valor.
3 Járjátok körül valamennyi harcosotokkal a várost, napjában egyszer járjátok körül. Így tegyetek hat napon át.	3 You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days.
4 A hetedik napon aztán fogják a papok azt a hét harsonát, amelyet az örvendetes esztendőben szokás használni, és menjenek velük a szövetségládája előtt, és járjátok körül hétszer a várost, s közben fújják a papok a harsonákat.	4 And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark; and on the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, the priests blowing the trumpets.
5 Amikor aztán hosszan és szaggatottan zengő harsonaszó hatol fületekbe, törjön ki az egész nép igen nagy lármába, s tövig leomlanak a város falai, s akkor mindenki menjen be azon a helyen, amellyel szemben éppen állni fog.«	5 And when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, as soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him."
6 Hívatta tehát Józsue, Nún fia a papokat és azt mondta nekik: »Vegyétek fel a szövetség ládáját, hét másik pap pedig fogja az örvendetes esztendő hét harsonáját, s menjen velük az Úr ládája előtt.«	6 So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, "Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD."
7 A népnek pedig azt mondta: »Menjetek és járjátok körül a várost. A fegyveresek az Úr ládája előtt menjenek.«	7 And he said to the people, "Go forward; march around the city, and let the armed men pass on before the ark of the LORD."
8 Amikor Józsue befejezte szavait, elindultak. A hét pap egyre fújta a hét harsonát az Úr szövetségének ládája előtt,	8 And as Joshua had commanded the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the LORD went forward, blowing the trumpets, with the ark of the covenant of the LORD following them.
9 elöl ment az egész fegyveres sereg, a láda után haladt a tömeg többi része, és minden zúgott a harsonáktól.	9 And the armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard came after the ark, while the trumpets blew continually.
10 A népnek azonban megparancsolta Józsue: »Ne lármázzatok, hangotokat se lehessen hallani, egy szó se jöjjön ki szátokból, míg el nem jön az a nap, amelyen majd azt mondom nektek: ‘Kiáltozzatok!’ – akkor aztán lármázzatok.«	10 But Joshua commanded the people, "You shall not shout or let your voice be heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then you shall shout."
11 Körüljárta tehát az Úr ládája azon a napon egyszer a várost, aztán visszatért a táborba és ott maradt.	11 So he caused the ark of the LORD to compass the city, going about it once; and they came into the camp, and spent the night in the camp.
12 Kora reggel aztán Józsue felkelt, s a papok fogták az Úr ládáját	12 Then Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD.
13 és heten közülük azt a hét harsonát, amelyet az örvendetes esztendőben szokás használni, s mentek velük az Úr ládája előtt, s menet közben egyre fújták a harsonákat. Előttük ment a fegyveres nép, s a láda után haladt a tömeg többi része, és egyre zengett a harsonaszó.	13 And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the LORD passed on, blowing the trumpets continually; and the armed men went before them, and the rear guard came after the ark of the LORD, while the trumpets blew continually.
14 Körüljárták tehát a második napon is egyszer a várost, aztán visszatértek a táborba. Így tettek hat napon át.	14 And the second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. So they did for six days.
15 A hetedik napon azonban már hajnalhasadáskor felkeltek és hétszer járták körül a várost a rendelet szerint.	15 On the seventh day they rose early at the dawn of day, and marched around the city in the same manner seven times: it was only on that day that they marched around the city seven times.
16 Amikor aztán a papok a hetedik fordulónál megfújták a harsonákat, azt mondta Józsue a népnek: »Lármázzatok, mert az Úr nektek adta a várost.	16 And at the seventh time, when the priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, "Shout; for the LORD has given you the city.
17 De ezt a várost és mindazt, ami benne van, az Úrnak kell szentelni, egyedül Ráháb, a parázna nő maradjon életben mindazokkal együtt, akik vele a házában tartózkodnak, amiért elrejtette a követeket, akiket küldtünk.	17 And the city and all that is within it shall be devoted to the LORD for destruction; only Rahab the harlot and all who are with her in her house shall live, because she hid the messengers that we sent.
18 Vigyázzatok tehát, hogy semmihez se nyúljatok, ami tilos és hűtlenségbe ne essetek, s így Izrael egész tábora bűnössé ne legyen és bajba ne jusson.	18 But you, keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, lest when you have devoted them you take any of the devoted things and make the camp of Israel a thing for destruction, and bring trouble upon it.
19 Minden aranyat, ezüstöt, réztárgyat és vasat az Úrnak kell szentelni: az ő kincsei közé kell helyezni.«	19 But all silver and gold, and vessels of bronze and iron, are sacred to the LORD; they shall go into the treasury of the LORD."
20 Amikor tehát megfújták a harsonákat és ez a hang és zengés a sokaság fülébe hatolt, az egész nép lármába tört ki, legott leomlottak a falak, és mindenki felment azon a helyen, amely előtte volt. Aztán bevették a várost	20 So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people raised a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
21 és megöltek mindent, ami benne volt, férfit, asszonyt, csecsemőt és aggastyánt egyaránt, s a marhát, a juhot, a szamarat is kardélre hányták.	21 Then they utterly destroyed all in the city, both men and women, young and old, oxen, sheep, and asses, with the edge of the sword.
22 Azt mondta ekkor Józsue annak a két férfinak, akiket kémlelni küldött: »Menjetek be a parázna nő házába és hozzátok ki őt és mindenét, amint ezt esküvel megfogadtátok neki.«	22 And Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, "Go into the harlot's house, and bring out from it the woman, and all who belong to her, as you swore to her."
23 Erre az ifjak bementek, s kihozták Ráhábot, szüleit, fivéreit, minden holmiját és rokonságát és elhelyezték Izrael táborán kívül.	23 So the young men who had been spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her; and they brought all her kindred, and set them outside the camp of Israel.
24 Aztán felgyújtották a várost s mindazt, ami benne volt, kivéve az aranyat, az ezüstöt, a réztárgyakat és a vasat: ezt az Úr kincstárának szentelték.	24 And they burned the city with fire, and all within it; only the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.
25 Csak Ráhábot, a parázna nőt s apja házát s mindazt, amije volt, hagyta életben Józsue – ott is laknak Izrael körében mind a mai napig –, amiért az elrejtette azokat a követeket, akiket Jerikó kikémlelésére küldött. Ugyanabban az időben átkot mondott Józsue:	25 But Rahab the harlot, and her father's household, and all who belonged to her, Joshua saved alive; and she dwelt in Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
26 »Átkozott legyen az Úr előtt az a férfi, aki feltámasztja és felépíti Jerikó városát! Elsőszülöttje árán rakja le alapját, s legutolsó fia árán állítsa fel kapuit.«	26 Joshua laid an oath upon them at that time, saying, "Cursed before the LORD be the man that rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. At the cost of his first-born shall he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son shall he set up its gates."
27 Az Úr tehát Józsuéval volt és hírneve elterjedt azon az egész földön.	27 So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was in all the land.
