1 And Job answered, and said:	1 Job prit la parole et dit:
2 Indeed I know it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with	2 Assurément je sais qu'il en est ainsi, et que l'homme, si on le compare à Dieu, ne sera pas trouvé juste.
3 If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one for a thousand.	3 S'il veut disputer avec Lui, il ne pourra pas Lui répondre sur une chose entre mille.
4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath resisted him, and hath had peace ?	4 Dieu est sage, Il est tout-puissant: qui Lui a résisté, et est demeuré en paix?
5 Who hath removed mountains, and they whom he overthrew in his wrath, knew it not.	5 Il transporte les montagnes, et ceux qu'Il renverse dans Sa fureur ne s'en aperçoivent pas.
6 Who shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.	6 Il remue la terre de sa place, et ses colonnes sont ébranlées.
7 Who commandeth tile sun and it riseth not: and shutteth up the stars as it were under a seal:	7 Il commande au soleil, et le soleil ne se lève point, et Il tient les étoiles enfermées comme sous le sceau.
8 Who alone spreadeth out the heavens, and walketh upon the waves of the sea.	8 Il étend seul les cieux, et Il marche sur les flots de la mer.
9 Who maketh Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the inner parts of the south.	9 Il a créé la Grande-Ourse, Orion, les Hyades, et les constellations australes.
10 Who doth things great and incomprehensible, and wonderful, of which there is no number.	10 Il fait des merveilles incompréhensibles, et des prodiges sans nombre.
11 If he come to me, I shall not see him: if he depart I shall not understand.	11 S'Il vient à moi, je ne Le verrai pas; et s'Il s'en va, je ne m'en apercevrai pas.
12 If he examine on a sudden, who shall answer him? or who can say: Why dost thou so?	12 S'Il interroge tout à coup, qui Lui répondra? ou qui pourra Lui dire : Pourquoi faites-Vous ainsi?
13 God, whose wrath no mall can resist, and under whom they stoop that bear up the world.	13 Dieu, personne ne peut résister à Sa colère; et ceux mêmes qui portent le monde fléchissent sous Lui.
14 What am I then, that I should answer him, and have words with him?	14 Qui suis-je donc, moi, pour Lui répondre, et pour avoir un entretien avec Lui?
15 I, who although I should have any just thing, would not answer, but would make supplication to my judge.	15 Quand même j'aurais quelque justice, je ne répondrais pas, mais j'implorerais mon Juge.
16 And if he should hear me when I call, I should not believe that he had heard my voice.	16 Et lors même qu'Il aurait exaucé ma prière, je ne croirais pas qu'Il eût daigné écouter ma voix.
17 For he shall crush me in a whirlwind, and multiply my wounds even without cause.	17 Car Il me brisera dans un tourbillon, et Il multipliera mes blessures, même sans raison.
18 He alloweth not my spirit to rest, and he filleth me with bitterness.	18 Il ne me laisse pas respirer, et Il me remplit d'amertume.
19 If strength be demanded, he is most strong: if equity of judgment, no man dare bear witness for me.	19 Si l'on fait appel à la force, Il est tout-puissant; à la justice du jugement, personne n'osera rendre témoignage en ma faveur.
20 If I would justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I would shew myself innocent, he shall prove me wicked.	20 Si j'entreprends de me justifier, ma propre bouche me condamnera; si je démontre mon innocence, Il me convaincra d'être coupable.
21 Although I should be simple, even this my soul shall be ignorant of, and I shall be weary of my life.	21 Quand je serais juste, cela même me serait caché, et ma vie me serait à charge à moi-même.
22 One thing there is that I have spoken, both the innocent and the wicked he consumeth.	22 Tout ce que j'ai dit se ramène à ceci : Dieu détruit le juste aussi bien que l'impie.
23 If he scourge, let him kill at once, and not laugh at the pains of the innocent.	23 S'Il frappe, qu'Il tue tout d'un coup, et qu'Il ne se rie pas des peines des innocents.
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked, he covereth the face of the judges thereof: and if it be not he, who is it then?	24 La terre est livrée aux mains de l'impie; Dieu couvre d'un voile la face des juges. Si ce n'est Lui, qui est-ce donc?
25 My days have been swifter than a post: they have fled away and have not seen good.	25 Mes jours ont passé plus vite qu'un courrier; ils ont fui sans avoir vu le bonheur.
26 They have passed by as ships carrying fruits, as an eagle flying to the prey.	26 Ils ont passé comme des vaisseaux qui portent des fruits, comme un aigle qui fond sur sa proie.
27 If I say: I will not speak so: I change my face, and am tormented with sorrow.	27 Quand je dis : Je ne parlerai plus ainsi, mon visage se change aussitôt, et la douleur me déchire.
28 I feared all my works, knowing that thou didst not spare the offender.	28 Je tremblais à chacune de mes oeuvres, sachant que Vous ne pardonnez pas au coupable.
29 But if so also I am wicked, why have I laboured in vain?	29 Que si, après cela, je passe pour impie, pourquoi aurais-je travaillé en vain?
30 If I be washed as it were with snow waters, and my hands shall shine ever so clean :	30 Quand je me laverais dans l'eau de neige, et que la pureté de mes mains éclaterait,
31 Yet thou shalt plunge me in filth, and my garments shall abhor me,	31 Vous me plongeriez dans la fange, et mes vêtements m'auraient en horreur.
32 For I shall not answer a man that is like myself: nor one that may be heard with me equally in judgment.	32 Car ce n'est point à un homme semblable à moi que j'aurai à répondre, ni à quelqu'un qui puisse d'égal à égal plaider avec moi.
33 There is none that may be able to reprove both, and to put his hand between both.	33 Il n'y a personne qui puisse reprendre les deux parties, et mettre sa main sur l'un et l'autre.
34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me.	34 Qu'il retire Sa verge de dessus moi, et que Sa terreur ne m'épouvante pas.
35 I will speak, and will not fear him: for I cannot answer while I am in fear.	35 Alors je parlerai sans Le craindre; car, dans la crainte où je suis, je ne puis répondre.
